HED 4 WIP warning very IMG heavy!!!

Jan 3, 2007

    1. warning very IMG heavy!!!

okies, here is the un-named head no.4 out of paperclay.
i used a different method on this one and i think it has come out better than the others so far.

      comments please!

i still have loads to do on it, sanding, carving, sanding, fixing, fixing sanding etc, i think it's getting there though.

the eyes are 18mm rather than 14mm (which they should be) so you can't see much whites of the eye. i have been working on it for about a month and a half at only half an hour at a time every couple of days so not huge progress.

i was going for an otherworldly character that could be male or female (depending on the face up) that could be easily modded into a vampire if wanted.

the first pics are the earliest, moving down to the latest.

i'll reduce the size of the top pics in a day or so when i can figure out how to do tumbnails with links )

    2. ooh so far so good^^
You'r doing a great job with details. I'll wait for more developemenets before i comment.

    3. I like the head so far, but there was something about it that bugged me. It's very stylized, narrow and pointy, which is cool since you're going for the otherwordly thing...I think it's the lips. The bottom one is sticking out more than the top one, which was noticable the most in the 3/4 profile shot (the 4th one)...Other than that I think it's pretty good. Maybe one of these days I'll try my hand at this....Haha probably not. I'll just stalk this forum like nobody's business.

    4. o yeah, d'ya know i never even noticed !!! (caan you believe that!!!)
yet another thing to add to the list : balance the lips out. :)
      thx
it's the right side isn't it, just taken another look and the left is okish but it's the right thats out of kilter!

    5. Aw, cute! He/she's coming along nicely. :)

    6. cheers, i did a bit more today but my camera card is full so i couldn't take any pics.

i 'think' i sorted the mouth out to make it more even and less pouty.
i fiddled with the nose too and carved out some of the ears (i'm not happy with them though) and i'm trying to work out how to do the crease above the eye without ruining the forehead !

    7. Oh COOL. I want to see the next picture.

What a quirky little face!! - and I mean that in a very positive way. I love quirky :)

I'm really impressed looking at the progression of pictures. and I think he/she/it is going to be fun on a stick once he's done!! Nice job!

    8. the so n so's ear fell off, doesn't matter as i hated them anyway i'm going to make them seperately n stick 'em on

i'm also going to slap on a layer of fine surface filler and sand down to see how it goes as some of the emory boards are leaving to many horizontal lines on the face.. i'm also going to cut some of my finer grit paper for the next round of sanding.

i think it looks more like a vulcan than an elf but hey, he's getting there ! (kinda) been toying with the name Orlando, like the film, androdynous (i know i can't spell), could be a male or female.

thanks everyone for the comments, coming from you guys it means a great deal. thanks for the quirky comment Baakay, that's exactly what i was going for, the slightly crazy, oddball look!!!

and that has to be the quote of the week : fun on a stick !!! :) :) :)

    9. he keeps getting better!
alright here are my critiques: eyes are supposed to be halfway down the face, so it feels like you'd need some more scalp (although with the wig on it looks fine, so that's totally up to you if you wanna change that)
i'd play around a bit with the shape of the eyes, not make them so round.

also, the lips stick out farther than the nose, so i'd make the nose bigger or stick out more. And if you notice on faces the bridge of the nose dips in and then the profile line comes back out into the brow. You don't seem to have much of that going on there.

overall he's adorable, and my suggestions are entirely up to you. He's looking great either way ^^

    10. Thanks illyrimur, yeah i have to build up the temples and cranium, i wanted to leave that boring bit for a while (do the interesting stuff first !) but seems like i can't avoid it any longer !

gotcha with the nose size needing to be bigger :)
the shape is supposed to be like that though, kinda like (can't remember exact source...eep) i think it was a disney, either pocahontas or one of the aztec / south american cartoons. i kinda like that fairly flat profile with the pointyness of the chin. but building up the forhead may change the profile to look more in line with what you may be thinking...we'll see tomorrow when i do the top part of the head :)

i had tried to make the eyes more pointy at the corners, but it doesn't seem to show up :( i'll also work on them too tomorrow. maybe an eye crease at the bottom may accentuate the shape ?

    11. Ah the lips are much better now! Coming along quite nicely! And actually, from the profile shot I could tell you changed the shape of the eyes a little. I think a face-up would make it stand out more since it's just a rough head at the moment.

I second the forehead comment, but maybe not a darmatic one. :P

    12. arggghhh, i had n accident.
i was moving the eyes down a bit n got carried away and the tool slipped n i took off too much :(

so now i'm twiddling my thumbs waiting for the big block of infil to dry so i can carve the sockets out again. i'd just finished sanding its' (gonna have to call it HIM eventually) forehead and take a photo to compare with a previous one as well. can you believe it !?!?!
      garrgghh, i'm so impatient.
