headphones project (with pictures)

May 24, 2009

    1. i wanted some headband-style phones for my msd boy, but all the ones i saw online were too expensive/the wrong style/not available in sizes other than SD. so, i looked at pictures on the internet, made some prototypes in plasticene and made my own.

modelled by by 46cm boy (just so you know, he's a little larger than many MSD).

they took me quite a while - i've worked on them over a few days - but they weren't extremely difficult, just time-consuming and fiddly. i'm very pleased because in all honesty, i used to just churn out terrible attempts at making things.

materials used: fimo/sculpey, felt, copper wire, glue, wire from broken human headphones.

      here are some more pictures:

(more here and closeup of the phone part here.)

i plan to make more, using different colours, styles etc - i have other ideas. any suggestions, possible improvements, tips ... anything welcome (please play nice ^ ^).

    2. Impressive, they look really nice.

My only other thoughts were that the (viewers) right side isn't as ...rounded? as the other side.

Also, maybe you could use some sort of black squishy material instead of the fimo for the little...ear-cup part? where you uses the twists? Then it could be put on the dolls ears without fear of it scratching or colouring the resin? I have no clue if that made sense.

    3. thank you ^___^

i think the right-hand headphone has a less twisted piece of fimo to represent the padding. is that what you mean? either way, on the next pair i can try to make them match better.
using fabric occured to me, but i'm not sure what. i can't sew well at all, and i think gluing fabric into a shape might be tricky. the fimo doesn't seem capable of scratching the resin though and once it's baked (which it is^^), i'm pretty sure it's colourfast. i could experiment with foam but i think i might just make a mess >.<

    4. You can always give the headphones a quick seal as well so you don't have to worry at all about color transfer. As for scratching I wold worry at all. So long as you're careful that is. I mean DIM has the resin head phones after all.
I also make Fimo gasmasks and just seal them to be sure things wont transfer and so long as you're not grinding it over the faceup there isn't much worry about damage.

    5. These are sooo cute! <3

    6. What about model magic air-dry 'foam'? I've never tried it for doll accessories, as I'm not sure if the color will transfer to the resin (it seems possible that it might.)

    7. they look really cool :) I so wanna make a pair now!

    8. A W E S O M E!!!!!!!!!

Funny I purchased a bunch of Fimo to attempt at something along these lines but as the same with the shoe soles, which I also purchased some, never happened, but mine would've never come out this great, the details are fantastic, i was just going to mold it up in all white just in case and paint the ear part that goes on the outside, I wanted a dragon design or something similar, buuutt gave up, another of my on my to dooooooo projects sooooome day. LOL

      Anywho, great job!!

      Evelyn:D

    9. Oh wow, those are really awesome.

    10. thank you everyone ^___^

Oizys: thanks for the idea, I might give that a go ^^ do you use the same sealant as for a doll, like MSC? I'm pretty sure there wouldn't be any transfer, but I'd hate it if I made some for someone and ruined a pale wig or fragile face-up or something.

      Sookie: thank you !!

Sonja: I had to look that stuff up, I'd never heard of it! I can't find a link to one with 'foam' in the name, but I found this review of something... the same thing? http://www.epinions.com/review/Model_Magic/content_177018605188 from what they say, I'm a bit worried the colour would transfer onto the doll more easily than fimo, and it seems quite expensive, but if I find some I might give it a go (especially if I come up with more projects to try ^^). thanks :)

Endless, Evil-lin & Foxy-kitsunechan, thank you very much ^^ i don't mean to sound like a mega-snob, but give the fimo a go again, i have churned out so many failed attempts i am so pleased with these now!

    11. oh wow! these look GOOD!

oh and by the way, i've worked quite a bit with polymer clay (especially FIMO) lately and from the stuff i've read and experienced, polymer clay does not react with resin. in fact, my resin work that involves polymer clay often screws up if i don't put enough resin in cos they do not adhere to each other, hence the polymer clay shifts around if it's too thin a layer of resin.

then again, i usually use epoxy resin, not sure if it's the same for polyester resin. best to check which resin your doll is made of first?

but a little tip for colours, even if polymer clay is rather colourfast, try to avoid any RED coming into contact with your doll, red is pretty notorious a colour for causing stains.

    12. I honestly just use whatever I have more of, so yeah either MSC or Testors usually. If something needs to be shiny there gloss over top like in faceups works out.

    13. they are awesome :D
      great job!

    14. Aaaaaaaaaaaw! It's really so cute!^^

    15. A tutorial of the process would be awesome ^ ^

    16. What about using the whole headphones? I'll get a MSD soon and I was planning of using human headphoned and some wire to make the shape.

    17. These look great! I have to agree that some foam on the ear peices would just make them. Maybe if you can find an old pair of headphones with the black foam and reuse it. I've fidddled around with the stuff and it's not very messy and pretty gentle.
I would also suggest maybe just covering the copperwires with black electrical tape along with the ends of the fabric part, just so it's a little more sleek and finnished looking.

    18. Those are just super! Really neat looking!

    19. Awww!!! Those are AWESOME. ima try makin some :D

    20. everyone, thanks for the compliments ^^ it means a lot!

snowfern; no red. i got it ;D
      oizys; thanks ^^
nika, bykasha, cheypy; thank you so much!
cat91151: i might get one up in a while (exams right right now, so i'm not doing anything much atm^^) but someone suggested i try to sell some sets, so i might do that too.
oscura69; i had the same idea ^___^ i have so many broken pairs, but none of them look quite right. well, except for one, which would be just perfect - if i hadn't lost the right earpiece (car went over it u_u i think)
mannim; black eletrical tape sounds good... i'll see what i can do. i haven't got any foam bits though, i'll see if i can improvise.
      momo-xin; good luck ^__^

    21. Very clever! They look perfect. Are they able to stretch enough to fit over his head without the Sculpy cracking over time? I would love to see a tutorial too!

    22. oh, that's so cute! I want one! *runs to get started.

    23. Wow that was pretty inventive.

    24. very cool! you did a really good job with them! being able to make stuff like this with polymer clays just totally opens up the world of miniatures doesnt it?
      :thumbup

    25. I'd been thinking about making something with fimo for a while and seeing as your headphones came out so well i might try it. Though one of my main ideas might not work in fimo. I'll have lots of little trinkets.

    26. These are so awesome "D

I was worried about nabbin' Dwyn some 'phones (I've nearly gone over my self-imposed price cap already), especially since the sites I'm using doesn't SELL any, but this has perked me up a great deal. Thanks!

    27. Thankyou everyone (I hadn't checked back for a while ^_^)

They won't crack over time - there's only sculpey on the ear-parts, which are on wire; in the headband is wire surrounded by layers of felt ^^ I'll probably make more if I have a spare weekend soon; this pair need some improvement with the wires that show & I'd like to make other styles too ^^

    28. I'd like to see more, cause this is pretty cool! I really like these alot more than those company headphones...I have a project idea for you, mini mp3 player? ;)

    29. That's so kind of you, hehe! :sweat
I have exams next week, but after that I will have more time for making things, and I want to make some more headphones as a gift for someone else ^^
Any ideas towards an actual MP3 player are welcome... I think the main difficulty would be maintaining straight edges and keeping it neat, any blemish would show up easily in Sculpey?

    30. I love your headphones, there very clean and sleek.
