just spent a bunch of days away from home with a box of grey clay and a bunch of sculpting tools.... there was a lot of stuff going on that didn't make it a very good time for sculpting, so I don't know if any of the resulting heads are going to be useable or not for casting practice. this one didn't interest me too much the way it was, so i'm starting to experiment with what are some of the variations that could be done to it to make it interesting to me. would love to hear any suggestions that folk come up with... here is the basic head : being very fond of scarface cecil - this was variation 1 : this is a variation inspired by some of Darkmothflame's sketches : and here I was thinking about corset piercings ... but these wouldn't be practical to cast... have to think about sculpting a ribbon running thru them... none of these are grabbing me completely yet - what to try next?
you are really a talented , the mods are a little scary to me but nicely done. If i would do a mod to a head i would prolly try cyborg with machinery showing where you leave out the skin, but thats something totally different than what you are going for right now. Goodluck ^^
Wow such unique details I don't see that sort of style very often but it's certainly has it's appeal :3 Awesome job XD
These are really nice, I love the lips in each. I like the idea of the piercing one. I think they'll all turn out great
oooh, I kinda think you should go for the Corset peircing, if only for the fact that the other variations have been done many times before in doll mods and such, and I've yet to see a corset-peircing on a doll that looked as nice as yours!
I'd have to agree with mandiiv ~ play with the corset piercing. It is possible to mold that to make it castable, there's just a trick to it...
I think the corset piercings would be cool too - but i'm not sure how you could do a mold that included them. I wonder if I just made the loops solid, and then drilled them out in the resin cast... hmmmm. I saw an awesome photo of a model that had corset piercings done lightly covering both eyes and her mouth... something that i find fascinating to look at, but would hate to have done. thanks for input guys - i'll see if I can figure out how to do something like this...
Why not simply make the 'ribbon' in clay? I think you suggested that earlier? It would look superior to random pieces of ribbon on the doll. I personally like the scar-faced doll, but I must admit there is an appeal to the corset doll. The closed eye/mouth one scares me :S
With the corset piercings, you can cast the piece, then drill the tiny holes all the way through the head so that half of the ribbon is inside the head cavity when strung. What you might consider is molding the backside of the ribbon, so that there's something visibly there, so you have what looks to be a full ribbon, but with the exterior being all nice and soft and real.
These heads are PURE awesome. VERY cool, I know a lot of people who'd love goth-cyber-pierced dolls like this! Using real ribbon would be neat! X33 But really it would be easiest to just sculpt it all as the cast and make the ribbon look as real as possible. Maybe a third option? (LOL I drew a quickie diagram...) I got this crazy idea to leave raised skin parts (what the skin would look like streched up a but with a D-ring inside it) to drill little holes where you can insert "D-rings" in (pieces of wire bent like a D-ring) that you superglue in place (or if the wire was stiff enough and you made sure to imbed it far enough when bending it you wouldn't even have to do that, then they could ride freely!), then thread with ribbon! Might be better applied to a doll's back tho, like I've seen on people, cause it'd be hard to do this idea TOO small, but there do make dremel drill bits that small, I've used them! X33
I know you said the basic head didn't interest you the way it is, but ohhh, it just blows me away. So good....
just for fun, i mocked up a quick dollfie sized head in clay and started playing with some piercing around the eyes with different stringing... Tro-chan was great, and made me some quick rings to test with... haven't found the right pattern yet - but this is fun. Lithe-Fider - you are right, i'm ignoring the lifted skin part --- I'm going to have to think about that - I would love to do a torso with the corset piercings down the back - those are so beautiful... Kitsuneudon and Soshi - I'm thinking about that too - though I like the idea of easily being able to change the color and pattern of the lacing that real ribbon would give...
I am incredibly excited!!! Twigling is so very cool!!! she has offered to work with me to cast a head that will work on her beautiful Twiglimbs body - and to see if we can create a pierced option too... I've been wanting one of her bodies since forever, now maybe I can have one with one of my own head designs on it too...... W00T! (<grimace> - now that that is "word of the year" i'm going to have to let it go.... sigh.) hey riverspirit .... right now I'm playing with a plain version of the head I first started trying the mods on... I don't know if this one will get cast or not, but i'm coming to like it a lot. it has been baked so many times the clay is many different colors - but this is what it looks like right now :
I liked the head with the stitches in it here: http://shadows.4oni.com/doa/head2_dk1c.jpg I really like the darker themes you exploited though. I'm used to seeing darker face-ups, but those sculpts were really unique! In a good way! ^_^ I hope that you will keep playing with that theme though! Enough tries and you will find something you love.
Wow, that's a really beautiful girl *w* I think the piercings and mods are cool, but I prefer her without them ^^
thanks guys for interest and nice words! .... just sprayed her with primer and will start sanding her smoother but took a couple of quick pics to see how she is going. I think i will want to modify her eyes a little.... I have intense respect for the artists with their perfect faces!!! how in the world do they keep everything even?
Its interesting to see your doll take on an asian look. The epicampus folds er the eyes take on a very asian look. I really like it.
hi Soshi... yep, i was thinking that i would love to have an asian girl - so thats the way i'm encouraging the head. its interesting how the primer makes mistakes really pop!!! and how in the world do people sand around the delicate features of the eyes and nose? sheesh. so very much to learn... off to pop head with changes back in oven then primer again...
best of luck patl! she's looking really nice. The only thing I could think of is more definition for the eyelids, but I really like the way it's coming along as is! I can't wait to see more.
sanded her down, evened out her nose, worked on her mouth a little and her eyes - now she needs work making both eyes the same shape and sanding the bridge of her nose abit. her mouth is going to be a little harder to figure out... played with different wigs this is fun!
There is something lyrical about your work. I am just in awe of your talent. Your sculpts look so...... human. No matter how out there you take them, they still have at their essential core this bit of honesty. I just find your work very gracious, and terrifyingly gentle. It is poetry in clay.
hey fairy, I'm truly honored.... sculpting is such a personal thing... putting up pictures of what you are working on is a leap of faith that the people who view them will receive them gently and you will be nurtured by the experience. <grin> in some forums it doesn't work that way - it is so lovely to be able to post here .....
this fall has been kind of stressful in our family - my mother and my eldest daughter golemgirl have just been going thru a series of health issues and on top of that work has been a pain. so we are approaching this holiday in a very low key way.... Darkmothflame did 2 incredible faceups on my minimee event heads that I want to post --- and is working on her unoa sized bjd that she is planning on casting. and i attacked head 2 with more sandpaper and sprayed it again. I like it a lot, and am definitely going to cast it in resin - but i think perhaps it is a little younger head than i had been intending. i would love any input folk might want to offer... my apologies for spamming - i had a good time taking pics...
Pat, she's gorgeous ~ I want one!! I especially like her in the shaggy wig with the thin braids. Maybe she did turn out a little young, but the clay holds endless potential and you can always make another head later; personally I think she could be any age depending on the setting, wig and faceup. Sorry to hear about your family's health problems.. low-key holidays sound good to me though ~ looking forward to seeing what Darkmoth has done with your Minimee heads
She looks lovely! You've done a really good job on her! And she looks very sweet with the white/blue wig. I'm looking forward to seeing more..
Twigling! was going to send you an email.... but my beloved son is hogging my computer - so i'm borrowing a quick moment on darkmothflames... thank you for kind words (and you too Armand) --- but i'm hitting that stage with this head where i better move on to the next stage before i throw her out the window... so i think its maybe time to do the rough cast in resin - and then clean up the resin (play with her eyes a little more in this clay maybe) but then was thinking of trying another head soon and see if it turns out older cause i love what you suggested on the piercings and want to experiment a bit with that --- but I've tasked myself to finish up the mad cat bjd before the show in july - and i want to start a body for the korean head. and I need to set myself some do-able goals and get at least something cast by summer. so many new things to learn, so little time!!! (<snork> - that really sounded stupid ---- ah well - hope everyone is having a great holiday.....)
ahhhhhh nothing says Christmas like a GIANT. EVIL. MUTANT. CAT. P.S. you shouls mkae a version that is like a bat (it looks more like a bat to me for some reason.)
hahahaha! my friend has a devon rex cat that looks just like that! OMG ur soooo awsome! (but then, everyone already said that!!!)
<grin!> - hey unoa_im_afreak!!! i suddenly saw him like a vampire bat - walking along on bent back legs with his wings/arms bent down to the ground.... i kind of thought he looked more like a bat too, but since i was trying to do a sphynx cat at the time, i got stubborn and have been calling him that.... Luna-El - I love devons too.... but boy are those wrinkles hard to make look right.
Oh wow, I'm really loving how the head is coming along... honestly, if you were to cast and sell copies of this head, it'd be the first artist doll I'd want to buy... gorgeous.
What ever happened to your idea to make heads for the orientdoll bodies? I remember you did a couple and threw it out there as a challenge for the rest of us to see what we could come up with. That was about when my life got turned upside down and I didn't come back to DoA for almost a year. So what ever happened to that? I have to admit that I have yet to pick up that gauntlet. Did anyone else? Sorry about your family's health problems- I know how overwhelming that can be, and my heart goes out to you and them. Glad you kept being creative It is the best thing for what ails you
Oh! That cat looks fantastic. Will you be showing more of it? Or could I possibly nag you for some more pictures?
I agree that she looks gorgeous without the piercings but I like the piercings as well!! Excellent job!!!
I love the Cat!!! Would sooo make an awesome goth cheshire cat. Still love the idea of the piercings. Maybe could be done on a less innocent (since you have redone the head) sculpt. Hope all is well with your Family.
Patl, you never cease to amaze me. I think she's gorgeous and depending on the wig you put on her she can be a young teen or a young adult. Your cat somehow reminds me of the naughty gremlin... LOL! I'll be stalking this thread for more pictures. I don't know how I missed it before.
got our first junk cast in resin done --- thank you so much for all your help darkmothflame!!! and she kindly did a faceup for it so i'd have an idea of how we are going. see a lot that needs to change - but not bad for a start.... all of these pictures were taken from a wierd angle due to light problems etc - sort of up her nose shots... makes her nose look really short... ah well, will try for better pics tonight...
OH, most intriguing with the lacing over the eyes... I like the contrast between the piercings and the rather classic look of the head, particularly. Do run with it! Forest http://www.forestrogers.com
She's beautiful Pat!! Send her over whenever you're ready.. I should have new bodies etc by the end of the month.
Patl, she's got perfect nostrils... that's one part of the face I'm a stickler for. Can't wait to see the final unveiling.
thanks guys --- Twigling, she is lumpy around her eye, and her neck opening doesn't work right yet, and she desperately needs some more sanding. at the very least.... how in the world do you get your molds/casts so perfect????? i would so very much love to see her on your body!!! i'll start sanding tonight when i get home.... (want to try some of your suggestions about how to give her the piercings while i'm at it too!)
Patl....I love her....especially her nostrils..I love how they flare...it gives her face so much character...and her lips are perfect....well done.... xen
She's beautiful. I like her face shape very much - it's a bit childish, whereas the expression of her eyes and other features are more mature => creates an interesting character
experimenting with setting rings in the resin for piercing --- need to find/make finer, smaller gold rings ---- wonder if basemetal will interact with the resin at all...
That cat is amazing. And I love your ideas for the piercings. The initial images with the corners of the mouth and the eyes sewn up looked really neat. I'm so eager to see what you do next!
Oh man.... that head is so gorgeous. I've said it once and I'll say it again -- I'd love to own one if you sold them, even a flawed junk cast (preferrably NS since I don't like white-skin dolls... but I'd even love a white one, it's that lovely.) She's just awesome, and I love the lacing idea -- i just wish it didn't go over her eyes. That kinda bugs me and makes me blinky XD
<grin> thanks guys - always appreciate when folk take the time to comment, I'm never sure how she looks to other folk. Twigling is taking a look at this head to see what needs to be done to clean her up for casting for real... so there may be decent casts available if it works out... <grin> Mandiiv --- i plan on trying a few more patterns for the lacing... maybe one of them will feel better for you... its fun to see them come out of the molds, but i'm not really doing the placement of the links right yet... getting better though!
wanted to share 3 different faceups on this head.... (Twigling very, very kindly cast her for me in white, tan and very dark tan... and Darkmothflame very, very kindly did faceups)
This is a really cool, interesting look. Very versatile head you've sculpted, patl -- after looking at the photos of her in various wigs on page 2, I think she'd even make a charming boy.
