OT/General Head scuplts made with Junga toy's blank Head base?

Sep 23, 2015

    1. Junga toy's blank "D.Head base" was the first product that guided me through sculpting my own facial-sculpt.

I've had used this head-base once before using the techniques suggested by Junga toy when their website was still up. but it didn't turn out as well as I thought it would and I just simply wasn't yet skilled enough to complete it. But the resulting work was easy to take off the head-base and I was able to start with a new brand new sculpt.

Using different materials, my second sculpt ended up being so much better then my first. The only problem that I have with using the Junga Toy Head-base is that the neck hole is small and shallow. It makes the finished head sit high up on the neck...

CLick to see the finished head on a torso here. (The body is a standard volks SD13 Boy.)

Drilling or dremling the neck-hole would solve that problem but As I want to reuse the Head base again one day it's just not possible.:sweat

Anyways, the reason why I posted this thread is in curiosity, has anyone else used the headbase to create your own head sculpt?
If so, please post photos, I'm curious on what other people have done.

    2. I did! I did change the neck hole, head closure, and cap pretty drastically. I'm away from photos at the moment, but I can add some a bit later on the morning.

    3. Here she is!

And this view of my first resin copies shows some of the early changes to the neck hole. (Later versions have been dremeled a bit deeper.)

    4. Oh wow, She's just lovely!

As I don't have a Dremel right now. That might change once I get my finished head casted. It sitting so high up on the neck just annoys me to no end. :sweat

I have submitted my sculpt to the DoA Admin to see if it will be accepted as an "On topic" doll but That was a week ago, so I don't know what they are thinking. It might be that because it was sculpted on a resin-base that it might be considered "A resin item that has been modified."

Bleehh....I will give it a few more days before bugging them about it again.

    5. I think doa takes a long time with these things, I submitted a clay bust I made to display an on topic floating head I got without body and they haven't decided yet if it qualifies as prop or doll part. Do bug them more though because I'm sure they got many questions now with the forum migration and your post might get drowNed.

    6. The Junga base shouldn't affect on topic status. The bases were made specifically as a sculpture platform. I have not offered Fussilli for that judgement however.

    7. Oh I see, How long has it been since you submitted your bust? I did post something on the "ask" fourm, thought it has been a little more then a week now.

That is true about the bases. It makes me wounder if they should add something to include member-made sculpts that where made with resin bases or sculpture platforms like the jungatoy base or perhaps the "Be Yours Age27 Face sculpting kit."

I would be a little unsure about using the "Be Yours" as there is more resin to it. The shape of the head, chin jawline and the ears are already sculpted on in resin on that item.
It looks great to use as tool to practice sculpting on, I would definitely buy a "BeYours" base to use for that, but not to cast from. It takes away the challenge a bit that comes from sculpting completely from hand. And I also have doubts that the DoA Admin would allow casts made from "BeYours" to be ontopic.

    8. Did you use the correct prefix? I posted a week ago as wrllbut I posted a couple of updates to it. Got a positive reply last night and they told me it had gotten buried, so yours must definitely be lost if you didn't get a single reply yet! Maybe message an online mod about the status of your post?

    9. I have one of them and I certainly appreciate not having to sculpt ears and get them symmetrical. ;) As for whether they'd be on topic. . . if the finished sculpt was cast by BeYours I don't think it would be a problem. I know that at the sculpting class at the Korean BJD Con in LA (I think that's where it was) that the man behind BeYours took a couple of the finished sculpts to cast.

    10. If it was casted by the company that made the item, Then is an explict way of saying that they are ok with your project it being casted.

I was told by the DoA Admin that I have to contact the Company and ask them if it was ok for me to have my head casting in resin. I did send an email a few days ago and now I have to wait for a response from them. :pout

I agree ears where difficult to do, the ears on my head are symmetrical, but they ended up being just a tad bigger then I wanted. oh well, I am still happy with them.
I did a second set of ears for my upcoming MSD-sized head and I had much easier time of sculpting them. Just like with everything else, it just takes practice.

    11. Oh.
As Junga Toys is sort of defunct, that could be problematic. I find that especially strange as that is expressly what they sold the base for in the first place. They even released the SD girl head they show in the sample images for a short time.

    12. Yay! I have some good news!

The company I emailed was Aileen doll and they confirmed for me that using the base is alright and I sent the screen shot of their response to the DoA Admin. And so....on to get my head casted in resin!

    13. Long time no update! but this isn't about any of my heads in progress right now. First of all, I don't actually have a camera anymore.

I now have a dremel! Which was very helpful in making the neck hole bigger. My first head sculpt now fits on on a Volks SD body! yay!
