Head-a-Day Continuation: Zone 5 (Chin and Cheeks ) (#120)

Mar 3, 2008

    1. I apologize for not getting back to this.. been overwhelmed. But Finally have some nice yet dark.. bad flash, pics to show.

I have really rounded out the head and worked on the eyes. The chin and cheeks I think look good here. (I do hate sanding though ...lol). I also drilled small holes in the head cap and placed two magnets so the head cap stays on by itself.

Side view of face (head wouldnt stay upright on dremmel so it looks odd)

I have managed to get the inside of the head to now properly fit a size 16 eye and the head shape is now good for 7-8 wigs (had a brief issue where I added too much to the head and had to sand it back down:doh)

And I have yet to touch the ears since I yanked them off

    2. PsychaDurmont - She's really coming along! She looks really even to me... and it's so exciting to see her with eyes and wig.

    3. Thanks Armeleia. :) I actually, now that I have a better feel for this, have been making her body too. I've kind of been avoiding making the ears on the head by procrastinating with the body. Tried ears twice and am really having a bear of a time. They just dont look right for her.

A question I do have, if it can be answered (I think Im the only one using SSculpty here), would you bake the ears(detailed) then apply them to the head or bake the ears on the head and add details after baking?

    4. (Don't know if people are still working on these projects, so I'm sorry if this is necroing.)
So cool to see the progress in everyone's sculpts.

Armeleia > your Fawn has become so refined and graceful. Looking forward to see the horns back on.
I also liked the more rough look of the sculpt in the beginning, which had an animal-like air, but I think it's still present in the sulpt now, just more subtly.

Psychadurmont > Your sculpt has really progressed. I like the evenness of it now and the face shape is very nice. Love the cheekbones.

Skumring > seems symmetry have been a struggle with the anubis sculpt - must be hard to get that long snout even ;). I hope you finish him, as I really think you have captured the majestic and imposant feel of an egyptian god in your sculpt. The long, lean lines are great, and I loved the ears.

Patl > Your two sculpts are so great and yet very different from each other. Can't help smiling when I look at nerf and I love the trickster look of your Oni. I think he cleaned up great. The brow looks a bit narrow, but that may be because I'm used to the very broad brows of bjd's in general, whereas his proportions are more realistic.

I've been lurking forever in this thread, but never had the time to continue on one of my head-a-day challenge heads. During the past days however I finally had the chance to pick up again where I left.

This is my original head from the challenge that I've continued with (only did two):

I haven't followed the zones categorically, but have rougly been around cheeks, chin, lips and brow. I especially need some work on the nose and the eyes. Well, everything needs more work, really ;)...

    5. Wow, zidora, she has really come a long way since you first posted her! She is so much more even and fleshed out - a lot more refined. :)

I've been working on Fawn periodically, but I haven't had a lot of time. Work has been so busy. I have filled out the back of her head, though, and I've done a lot of small balancing on her face. At this point, I mostly need to fill in some of the little divots where I've been overzealous x-acto'ing off material and add a bit to the inside of one of her eyelids. And, um, get rid of some of the lumps. Otherwise, though, I think I'm ready to start working on her jointed ears.

(on a Twigling's faboo new body).

Looking at this pic, though, she has a little bit of a neanderthal brow going... :sweat Should maybe consider grinding that back too...

    6. Oh I love her face, armeleia.
I agree a bit with grinding back her brow, and generally smoothing it out, it looks in some spots flatter and others rounded, but oddly.. all of it is smoothe.
Shes got a very precious face, I can't wait to see more work on her~!

    7. Oop, gotta watch this, I LOVE this thread.

    8. I just don't understand why a couple of you not yet have been offered jobs by some American bjd dealer that is hungry for their own doll line x---x

Wish i had some time to join you guys. (bah i chose clothing and faceup work this summer.. *looks for a hole in time to join some doll making XB)

    9. Armeleia > She looks amazingly smooth and has a nice finished look in the last pic. Her features are so soft and delicate - I really like her look.
The profile is very sweet, especially the nose.
Taking the picture like that with a lot of shadow is actually quite helpful in revealing details and general lines of the face. I was wondering whether her nose from the side could use just a tad more definition in the nostril area?
I can see what you mean by the "neanderthal brow" ;) - as you say slimming it down a bit might soften it up.

I've been continuing on my head since last. I have some problems with getting especially the eye area right. Right now I can't put my finger on exactly what's wrong.
The ears are not finished, but I think I will keep them simple and fantasy-style like in the picture to avoid sculpting real ones. Just have to find a shape that suits the face.

    10. The right eye isn't at the same angle as the left. The bottom of the eye on the right side slants upward more from the inside to the outside edge.

I think you need to add clay and cut back sort of like this:

That would make it look like this:

If you do that, you might also consider adding the bridge of the nose and brow ridge on that side to match it to the other side. I think it's looking great so far though!

I've been busy so I haven't worked on Fawn, but I did start her ears. They're not attached to her head since they'll be jointed fawn ears... on one hand, it's really hard. But on the other, it's easier to get them the same shape when I can work on them separately and lay them next to each other to compare.

    11. Armeleia > thanks, I think you're right. I hope I'll be able to "move" the eye without disturbing the symmetry (or sort of symmetry ;)) of the rest of the face too much.

    12. I think you'll be okay! Just add a little and cut back a little. *pompoms*
