Have you ever disliked a sculpt or company and then ended up falling in love with it?

Jun 9, 2016

    1. I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else! I used to think Doll Chateau dolls were unappealing but just recently I purchased a Doll Chateau Mephisto.pheles. He is my grail doll and I am totally in love with the sculpt. Tell me your stories!

    2. IOS Chaos for me. Now it's one of my favorites and I'm currently waiting for mine to come to me.

    3. I did the opposite once! I fell head over heels for a sculpt then after three days I realised I really hated him! I don't know why I changed my mind so quickly, maybe it wasn't his head; perhaps I just liked him for his body *laughs*.

    4. I tend to get fed up with over popular sculpts, seeing them everywhere seems to make me dislike them a lot. For that reason, I thought I'd never buy a Unoa head. But, well... that was before ! Unoa have so much potential and their features a so interesting, I ended up buying one xD
Now I try to never say never, still there are three dolls that, for the same reasons as the Unoa, I highly dislike : Minifée Chloé, Pukifée Ante and Luts Kid Delf bory. I admit they are cute, and of course I don't hate all of the Chloé, Ante and Bory, but most of time I feel like "oh, yet another one...". And their features don't appeal to me at all (Chloé and Ante are too "perfect", Ante and Bory are too pouty for my taste). In any case, I'm not saying that in a mean way, so I hope no one will get offended ! It's just my opinion about this dolls, and it doesn't imply anything about their owners.

    5. I absolutely hated the renewed version of Theo by Iplehouse when they brought him out. It was especially when I saw the promo pics of him with face up B in peach skin and the curly hair style. It took a few days to figure out why, then I realised he looked identical to a guy on my University course. It's uncanny! But the guy is a creep so it totally put me off Theo, despite liking his original version.

It took looking through promo pics of clothing for my other SID guy for me to fall in love with Theo again. The promo pics with short dark hair, normal skin and face up A make him so handsome and because the other images of him weren't there, I didn't instantly see the creep from class staring back at me lol  So as he is now being discontinued, I am taking the gamble on images I do like of him and have him on order to become companion to another of my dolls ;)

    6. This is going to sound really goody-two-shoes of me, but I focus more on what I like and unfocus from what I don't like. So if you ask me what doll or company I dislike, I don't have one that jumps to mind. Even when I manage to focus down long enough to think of something I am not fond of, I am not so bothered that I have to actively not like it. It's just not for me. Which is fine, more for someone else.

I have gone through phases of being tired of doll trope X,Y and Z. But eventually the fad is over and it becomes a funny memory. Like my fond recollections of the Shiwoo skirt boys of the mid aughts~ :XD:

    7. I was never much of a Fairyland fan but I totally love the Mir/Mika sculpt. I didn't think I'd ever like minis at all, really, but hello Dollzone Benjamin and Hal and everything Doll Chateau makes :sweat

    8. When I was new to BJDs, I used to think Doll Chateau dolls were scary.
Nowadays I LOOOVE DC so much and find them very beautiful <3

    9. For me it was IslandDoll... In 2013 I think "O gosh how ugly doll they have! These body, faces D: Why people buy so ugly bjd?"
And now I fell in their tinny animals especially sheeps (Mian Mian ❤❤❤❤ Nuan Nuan ❤❤❤) and I like RE! She is beautiful ❤ All their new dolls look very nice. Now I must say:
"I am sorry Islanddoll! Your dolls are beautiful now!" :)

    10. I really like IslandDoll but I'm new so perhaps that's why. One thing I do hate about IslandDoll is how common their name is and 90% of the time when you google them you get links to "the island of the dolls". *sigh* It's so annoying!

    11. Doll Chateau. I used to dislike all their dolls 'cause of too thin bodies and strange faces. Then I received Christina head as a present and I got her a Souldoll body. She's been one of my favorites ever since. I started to see beauty in DC faces and now I really want one (or more) of their dolls on DC body. They grew on me ))

    12. I think a pretty common company that a lot of people are going to say is Doll Chateau. I, myself, fall into that category. There are still several sculpts that are unappealing to me but I do have a DC doll on layaway.

Another company that I don't particularly like (which will probably get me stoned for saying) is Volks. I like their vinyl dolls but most of their resin ones aren't my style. Except the Black cat Lucas (I think that's what he's called). I saw one in person and he was lovely.

    13. This might be a little out of the ordinary for these forums, but admittedly I used to dislike ALL ball joint dolls. I used to find them super creepy and really didn't like how "uncanny valley" they looked. I always loved the idea of fashion dolls, but had a hard time when it came to the dolls themselves. I used to spend time looking at the outfits people made for them and over time the dolls themselves started to grow on me.

A few years ago I stumbled across pictures of a Puki Pongpong and he became the first doll I truly fell in love with. He acted as basically an entryway to loving more and more, and now I like almost all dolls!

    14. Maybe I will be alone with this but: Fairyland. At first I really hated their sculpts. To tell the truth my taste is totally different from others; and at first, when unusual stuff wasn't that popular, it was very hard to belong to the community... I am big fanatic of Doll-Chateau and I really couldn't see the beauty in Fairyland productions; or in any other company. Now I am proud owner of an modded Shushu and an Rendia and I started to like them :kitty1

    15. Happened to me very recently. I am usually pretty set in what I like or dislike. Iplehouse Harace changed that. When she was first released she was not a sculpt that appealed to me at all and I hadn't seen any that changed my mind..... Not until she was just released in the new Haute Couture version. :aeyepop:
I think she's the absolute image of Elizabeth Hurley and I can't keep myself from continually returning to her sales page for another drool.

    16. I was like that with Granado initially, their sculpts were very realistic and it just creeped me out for some reason. But I found myself going back to their site over and over again, and eventually ended up buying a doll and a couple of heads. But I think that was also in the midst of me figuring out that I liked the more realistic, gritty, older male sculpts as opposed to the cute, young boys. Granado is certainly one of my favourites now. XD

    17. Lillycat cerisedolls. In the beginning, I didn't like much of her dolls. It wasn't hating of course, but just thought they weren't that pleasing to look at. But then last year I saw a pic of Ninon that made me fell in love, and today I'm absolutely smitten with them. They are just so unique and lovely and the resin is absolutely superb! I want a Ninon in cartoon body and a Lilas now :whee:

    18. Literally all Switch sculpts. I would look at them on their website, and heave a disgusted sigh - and then fall violently in love with the exact same sculpt when someone on Insta posted their own pictures!! I think I just find their company photography and faceups kinda unflattering for their beautiful work. Now I want so many, and am furious that I missed out on Dojin when I did because I didn't care for him from the company pictures!!! Fie upon me!!

    19. Same here! I hated Fairyland and said minifees are so overrated, I would never want one. After playing with a friend's minifee and also seeing all the cute clothing options available, I started to change my mind. Now I have a Minifee RFA head on the A-line girl body and I love her! She's one of the best MSDs I've ever owned and her posing and ease of removing her head and hands is just wonderful! I think a lot of my problem was that I don't care for their default faceups. They aren't ugly, they just don't interest me. Seeing unique or custom minifees made me look at them in a whole new light.

    20. Be thankful you're not Googling "Doll Love." I inadvertently saw things that cannot be unseen. :?:shudder

On topic, this is happening to me right now. The first time I saw Supia's Noa, I thought she was uncute and clicked away. Now, I'm quickly becoming obsessed with her, and I want her exactly as she's shown on their site: white skin, orange faceup, wild flame wig, lace dress. That never happens to me.

    21. I kind of dislike fantasy creatures. I don't have much interest in angels, devils and fairies. I'm more into the realism of BJD's.

    22. I have the opposite...I used to love a company and its dolls so much I was literally obsessed...even got sculpts from them but now I'm like 'meh' about them. I don't hate them, I just don't care anymore.

    23. Yes, the internet is full of things that can't be unseen...
I once accidently stumbled on a site about "real dolls" thankfully I realised before I clicked on the page (thank you new tab!)

    24. Yes this has happened to me. I disliked DC dolls, because of the really long bodies, necks, arms etc. Then I kept looking at them more and more. I don't own one, but i will.

    25. I feel this way too sometimes. Companies, sculpts and even sizes. I used to LOVE the 1/4 scale but now it's my least favorite. I've sold all but two of my 1/4 dolls and I'm currently trying to sell one (but I'll keep the other forever and ever because she is my first doll and nothing can replace her).

    26. Doll Chateau in general struck me as creepy for a while and then I started to fall in love with it. Finally, interacting with my friend's DC Dennis sealed it. They've adorable!

    27. Agreed. I wasn't attracted to Harace's sculpt at all, but the beautiful makeup has completely transformed her. Iplehouse did a really good job & her expression suits the theme of a high fashion model quite well too.

    28. When I first saw Dollzone Cosmo I was like ewww he is one ugly doll but after seeing owner pics I started to like him..now I have him.
I also didn't like Doll Chateau because I thought of concentration camps but now I have seen some beautiful ones now I am tempted..

    29. Congratulations, Minkas! :) I just saw your post in the IH waiting room and see you are getting the new HC Harace. I can completely see why you changed your mind. The new version is stunning and I think so different from the original release that it's hard to believe it's the same sculpt..

    30. Fairyland Ante. Did not like her Littlefee, pukifee, or pukipuki forms but once they made her a minifee I loved it! Ante is my first minifee.

    31. Thanks so much! Yes I am smitten by her and have caved. Now to play the waiting game for that exciting 'shipped' status update!

    32. It happens to me all the time:sigh
Strong negative reaction - is a first step to buying))

    33. Oh ho ho ho, yes. I used to dislike Fairyland because they were so popular but I just bought my first Minifee :3 I ended up falling in love with their poseability and face/hand options.

    34. Same here! Fairyland dolls used to really bug me, and I'm still not huge on their older sculpting style or their larger dolls (although I can appreciate other people's), but then one day I just HAD to have a Puki. And then a RealPuki, and a PukiFee, and a LittleFee.... Argh. Most of those dolls have been sold on now, as I narrowed down what size I actually prefer to handle, versus the much wider array of dolls I like to see in pictures, but I still enjoy the aesthetics of most of them.

Also, Unoa. Hated those suckers. Something about their completely similar faces really irked me on an artistic level. And then I saw a Unoa L-Bi boy for sale in the marketplace. His name was Lennox, and he was literally one of the most gorgeous dolls I've ever seen, in and of himself. Rather, I mean, than a doll who reminds me of something else. He changed my mind about the entire brand, and now I enjoy seeing them. Honestly, I wish I had been able to come up with the money to buy him, but he was twice what I could have/would have been willing to pay. :( *sniffle* I still have actual regrets about that...

    35. Same here with Doll Chateau.

    36. Yeah me too. I don't like Doll Chateau at first, but now I'm in love with Medeas.

    37. When I first saw Unidoll Ark, I was like, "Yikes! What on earth is that!?" followed by "I need him in my life!" I am now proud to say I own an Ark of my own, and he's probably my favorite doll. If I could only keep one, I think I'd keep him. (Just don't tell the others. ^_~)

    38. Nothing original here, but Doll Chateau (for the reasons everyone and their mom stated) and SWITCH. I NEED a Sensitive Dojin now after seeing some owner pics, but why on Earth did they give him a company faceup that looks like his bottom eyelids are inside-out?

    39. For me it was Volks Williams. The first time I saw him in 2006/2007, I really disliked him, so I passed up the opportunity to buy him when he was still available. Then the inevitable happened: He became my dream doll... Took me 7 years before I was able to get one on the second hand market, but I did it and never regretted it :).

    40. For me that's often certain sculpts I see that I dislike or even hate... but then all it takes is that one perfect owner picture to completely change my opinion about the sculpt and kinda makes me wanna have one too. Like, that one picture is enough to show that the sculpt has great potential after all.
I think Migidoll Jina was one of those, and Dollshe Saint!

    41. Absolutely! I remember when Dollshe Orijean came out (so long ago now) and I really just couldn't like him. I don't know why as he is such a unusual sculpt. I think he created such a strong reaction in me that I never really forgot about him and over the years I decided that I had to have him! Thanks to the huge discount offered by Dollshe at present I have finally ordered him in a beautiful translucent white resin, ahhh so dreamy! :love

    42. I actually have a few...

Dollzone - I felt the upper lips on their dolls were too darn huge. I loved everything else about them but the style of their lips and it bugged me like crazy. I'm used to them now and actually find them quite artistically pretty. I wouldn't mind getting a female doll of theirs sometime in the future.

Doll Love - Their eyes seemed much too huge for their heads, especially for the bigger dolls, and I didn't like their super soft looking chins. But when wifey brought home a Brian from them, I realized they're much more beautiful in person. Now I look at their stuff every week. XD

This is gonna sounds strange, but... Iplehouse - Don't get me wrong, I loved how mature and aesthetic their sculpts are, but for some reason I was turned off by it all, too. It could be because I'm used to the younger-looking MSDs. Lately though, I've learned to appreciate them.

Contrary to what a lot of others have said, I actually found Doll Chateau to be one of my favorite companies as far as sculpts go. XD I'm SUPER picky about heads and bodies. So if there's a joint I don't particularly like or an aspect of the face that doesn't get my heart pattering, it can really break my interest in the doll quickly.

    43. Sort of, only with me it was with YoSDs and tinies in general rather than any sculpt or company in particular. They seemed so cutesy, and so pricey for the size. I couldn't understand what the appeal was. I didn't want a resin child. Except, I kinda did, because my favorite OC is a child. So I kept looking at the smallest dolls, just out of curiosity...and then I found her. Littlefee Dark Elf Soo. I fell head over heels.

So now I have 4 Yo-sized dolls. And yeah, the DES is totally my child.

    44. Cerise Doll Lily Cats.

I'm not a big fan of the animal type BJDs, and I thought that the Lily Cats were just over grown cats. But they're actually very very beautiful! :love

    45. Oh my god, literally yesterday I suddenly realised that Dollshe Orijean is completely heartbreakingly beautiful after years of being kinda "eh" about it!

      • x 1
    46. It is not a specific sculpt that I used to dislike but more every head with either elf ears or vampire teeth would make me back away. Now, although I would never buy one for my own collection as all my characters are human characters, I still have learned to appreciate their beauty.

    47. Well, Volks - I hate their marketing (cause, Japanese international marketing 'strategies' are basically maddening) and I didn't like the basic aesthetics at first. But someone was selling a Kanata in the MP and I liked his look plus the price - so got him. LOVE the quality of the resin, the stability and posing. I still only like a few of the sculpts, but when I like one - well, I plunked down REALLY serious cash for a Ryoma...and love him to bits! However, still upsets me that Volks still doesn't see me as a 'legitimate' doll owner when THEY made it so hard to get one straight from them....

    48. Absolutely! Some dolls are an acquired taste. At first you think WTH and then later you find them totally interesting.

    49. I used to hate Hamin from Supia doll and now I think she's adorable. When I met volks something similar happened, I didn't like any sculpt but now I love their girls and still don't like the boys

    50. I never really liked DollChateau due to their unique sculptures but as time passes by as I scroll down my FB,
My BJD agent who was an official agent for DC kept posting new upcoming dolls from them.

Their designs are amazingly unique and I never would have thought to be admiring their designs as time goes! :XD:

    51. I've always found DollChateau and DollZone dolls and sculpts to be creepy and even scary... Then recently I fell in love with one of the DollZone boys, Gray, and suddenly I'm looking at all of them in a different way ;~;
I still have some problems with DollChateau though >.<

    52. I never liked DC line, but I fell in love with a few of them now. I really want Bella. I think she's really cute. I know why I didn't like DC was the long bodies with the extra joints. Now I can't wait to get one. The more you don't like one it seems them more you need it. lol

    53. Definitely Doll chateau! I just thought they were too weird and unrealistic looking but then I started looking at them with a more open mind. I found that I love Bella! I probably will never get her as I only collect Sd dolls. Recently I bought DC Katherine which was an event doll that they had in stock on Alice's Collections. She arrived yesterday and I absolutely LOVE her. She is supposed to be a Christmas present for my daughter but I might have to keep her for myself.
The other company is Dollshe Craft. I just did not see what was so special. I am starting to appreciate them more though after seeing owner pics and videos.

    54. I used to not be a big fan of the Doll Chateau bodies, but I've come to love their uniqueness and elegance. It's super charming!

    55. Strangely I disliked Fairyland Roke and then about 6 months ago. Bam- he was added to my ever growing wishlist XD

    56. I used to hate Peak's Woods dolls because I felt like their faces were too flat. Now I'm waiting for my PW MSD to come in.

    57. I wasn't a huge fan of Lati Yellows at first, except for maybe one or two of them. Then I got one from a friend (actually probably my least favorite sculpt from them at the time) and totally fell in love with her. Now she's my little angel! :love I also wasn't a huge fan of the Pixie sculpt from BBB, but then I found some really rad owner pictures and realized she had a lot of potential to be adorable~ :blush

    58. Yes...I don't like Volks at the first time because their faces always fat...But now, Volks is my favorite doll company, haha!

    59. I entered the hobby when the old CP Delfs were at their peak popularity, especially Shiwoo and El, and I was seeing them everywhere. And I just didn't get it. I couldn't see the appeal in either sculpt, couldn't see myself ever wanting either, much less buying one... And now I own exactly two secondhand Delfs, and you'll never guess which two. I also have both as LTFs, one as a MNF (with the other on my wishlist!), and would love to get both in other sizes, too.

I also couldn't stand Doll Chateau when I first saw them. I actually couldn't close the page fast enough! But I looked again, and the more I looked, the more I saw their weirdness as appealing. I'm not sure I'll ever get one, since they don't fit with my collections, but now I love seeing what people are doing with them!

    60. DollZone has sort-of been that way for me... I've liked their stranger "creatures" for quite awhile, but didn't care at all for their human dolls. The way they sculpt faces just generally doesn't appeal to me.

      And yet...
I keep finding myself going back and looking at Robin again.

I can't for the life of me figure out what it is about THAT particular face that's appealing, out of all the guys they've done. But I can't deny that there's something that's moved him from the "Yet another pointy-lipped, droopy-eyed Nope"-category onto my "He might make an interesting addition to the crew"-list.

I'm still not 100% sold, and may not be for a few more years... He's a big doll and my cabinet space is very, very limited these days... But even having him up for consideration is a pretty big change.
