HALP my face is blah

Feb 9, 2012

    1. So I'm working on this head, and it's going badly. There are many things terribly, terribly wrong with it, but I'm hoping this isn't a shave-it-off-and-start-over situation. That's what I'm here to find out.

This is meant to be a feminine female head.

      The plan:

      Not the plan:

      As you can see. Blah.

I think the eyebrow ridge is too pronounced, but there's something else wrong with it that I can't put my finger on. And why are the lips so ugly?

    2. the head is in need of some work on proportions

      re: brow
      try adding more forehead
from the middle of the eyes to the bottom of the chin is one-half head length
the head is usually about five eyes wide

      re:lips
they are too close to the nose

in general, there are proportional rules-of-thumb which may be applied to any head
then there are subtle differences between male and female heads, based on the skull

do you have any figurative drawing or sculpting experience?

    3. I'd suggest getting some front & side photo reference, and trying to sculpt a relatively realistic head. It may sound like trying to run before you can walk, but you'll learn a lot about anatomy that way.

But specifically, in addition to more forehead, try adding more to the cheeks, particularly around the lips. The lips need to tuck into the face at the corners.

    4. Very helpful, thanks. I do have figure drawing experience, but not a lot of sculpting experience. Now that you point it out, I can see how high the eyes are! Oops. I'll see if I can scoot them down. And I'll check out all those links. Thank you!

    5. I just made a post to my weblog which may be helpful, since it deals with the rules-of-thumb of drawing a face.
      http://atelierpoupee.blogspot.com/2012/02/02-drawing-n-31.html

Remember that rules-of-thumb for drawing or sculpting the figure are not carved in stone.
Artist dolls and Fantasy dolls will break the rules more often than not.

Unless you're making a very realistic doll, the rules are meant to be broken.

The funny thing about working with the figure is that even non-artists can feel that something is not right.
Part of that is because we are all human beings, and we just know the figure, whether we can express it or not.
"A portrait is a likeness in which something is wrong with the mouth" - John Singer Sargeant

I agree with Morgan. It can be very helpful when learning to use a reference.
Best if you can find a 360 degree turn-around reference.
At least a front and side view.

Also, look for some artist anatomy references, so you can become familiar with the skull/skeleton.
One of my favorite Artist Anatomy books is Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist, by
Stephen Rogers Peck, Oxford University Press, 1982. ISBN: 0195030958

    6. I'd say you need to add some clay to the forehead/top of head. The eyes aren't in the middle of the head. The browridge is very pronounced as well, and It will be difficult to sculpt since you drew the eyes to take up a large portion of the head. I'd also say try adding more clay to the sides of the head, cheeks.. jawline. The mouth looks fine but I think the lack of clay on the sides is what's making it look weird to you. :)
