Hi friends, I have just recently gotten my first doll, but it has been raining where I live so I have not yet had an opportunity to any outdoor photoshoots. I have tried to put images on the TV and pose the doll, but the backlighting really highlights an issue I am having with the wig. So I thought it would be worth asking, do you all edit the hair any? I tried to calm down some fly-aways, but I feel like it is too obvious (more-so when a hair is on her face). Should I focus more on flattening down the hair before the pictures? I did try to but I don't have great eyesight, and I noticed many more hairs when looking at the images. Here is an example, with no color correction or real editing, only attempts to play down some strays. Before: Link After: Link (also after seeing these so close together I think I did just do the auto-adjust for color) Edit to add: Is there something else I should do to make photos embed? I am not sure why they look broken Edit again, I am so sorry lol: They were 1.8 MB but dropping them to 1.3 MB worked
I almost always edit out stray hairs. I don't try to get all of them, just the ones I find most distracting. It's definitely worth spending time beforehand to tame the hair as much as possible, but you're always gonna miss some.
I use anti static wig spray on a lot of my dolls before photoshoots, but I do definitely also edit stray ones out a lot! (Or cover them with sound effects if it’s a photo comic...) I’ve also edited out cat hairs on darker clothes (because they just magically spawn there sometimes even when my cat doesn’t go near them and I regularly only notice them after I’ve taken the photo)
I think trying to tame the wig as best you can before hand is the best course but I am terribly lazy and do not edit my photos. I just accept that my dolls have bad hair like me! (I have a lot of frizz and can not be bothered to try to tame my own hair.)
@Torino that is such a clever idea!! I will get some anti-static spray, thank you!! @jessholy good point, it can add character and aliveness!
I edit some, but I feel like over editing them sometimes would make my photos look too touched up and not quite as natural.
I honestly brush the hair before taking the photo until i am satisfied so these extra lines doesn't bother me. I use sometimes water in order to style iy if its alpaca wigs. Try this out maybe you won't be needing to edit hair.
Ah, loose hair is the bane of my doll photography. I work really hard to brush loose hair from in front of the face and to smooth the outside of the wig. If I miss one hair in front I usually edit it out. Photoshop's healing brush tool is amazing, though not perfect, for this. If I miss a few on the outside I edit them. I wish I knew a magic answer to solve the problem forever but alas no magic solution....
I keep a soft toothbrush in my camera bag and a little cup of water nearby to dip it into. Works great to smooth down the flyaways.
Yes!! Thank you so much @Havra - I have been using a toothbrush and that is SO helpful hahah Very excited to try it with a little bit of water though- that is very clever!
Something I've found immensely helpful with cosplay wigs that could carry over to doll wigs is using dryer sheets! Just a couple passes over really helps to calm down flyaways, I've found. They can be easily cut into smaller pieces for smaller dolls as well, and are easy to keep in a camera bag. Plus they smell nice~
