I just recently found this tutorial on taking photos for anime figures, and the techniques can apply to BJDs as well so I thought I'd share it! It's really simple and easy to follow~ http://www.happysoda.com/archives/88 I'm going to go buy some tracing paper and try that diffuser idea tomorrow
yeah me either! i gotta pick up some of that too~! i checked out the other tutorial on the site: http://www.happysoda.com/tutorials-and-other-resources/index.php?p=129 it has some neat tips on backgrounds, like using wrapping paper... i don't think i'd have ever thought of that! but it's probaby cheaper than fabrics
Besides poster board, a piece of foamcore board makes a great reflector, and stands up better, since you often need a bigger piece for 60cm standing dolls. In addition, foamcore can make a good "extra wall" to cover up background junk if you don't have a separate set area for taking pics. Years ago, we used to use gold-foil wrapping paper, crumpled up fine and then spread out again (to eliminate harsh reflections) and taped to a piece of cardboard or foamcore, to make reflected light that was warm gold in color. Very useful and dramatic if your natural-light source (like from a north window) is very blue in tone.
White reflectors are wonderful - and there are several good tips about them here. But sometimes they can "blow out" a doll's facial features if they reflect too much bright light! Other options are the gold crinkled foil as hobbywhelmed stated or a simple silver reflector that is used under the windscreen as a dash protector/interior coolant for cars! These are affordable and can be picked up at a variety of stores. I have found that the silver tends to give me a better "colour" with the dolls - but I have only snow skintones, so that does make a difference with the silver rather than the more warming gold.
Wow I could totally use these ideas for shooting pictures. Especially since my camera hates certain lighting... Thanks a lot!
Thank you for the link. I still have to read everything in depth, but the photos look promising. For photostories, it might be a bit cumbersome though, and I wonder if the proximity of all the materiel is critical, but I will definitely give it a try
Interesting! And because it's Christmas time, we're getting deliveries all the time, so there's bound to be a couple boxes I can use.
This is unbelievably helpful! Now maybe I can take some photos without looking like a complete amateur. Thanks!
Thanks for the link! What a pitty that I have only one lightbulb :S For better effects should be at least 3, meh!
Very useful tips, wrapping paper is a great idea to use as a backdrop. The tutorial was also quite funny, I think I will make black turtle necks for all my dolls so that they can seem extra artistic. :-P
