Hello! I am a first time BJD owner and at a bit of a loss, trying not to succumb to anxiety about this. I am hoping this is the right place to put this thread, forgive a newbie if not! I recently purchased my first doll, and I believe I am at least his third owner. I anticipated him needing a bit of TLC seeing as he is older and all but I am a bit over my head with this situation. He has magnetic hands and one of his hands will not come off at all and I am worried it might have been glued on by a previous owner. His other hand/wrist is missing a magnet and when I posted on the BJD sub-reddit for advice on repairing that, someone commented on there being a lot of glue residue which is why I have the worry that his other hand might be glued on. Is it normal for magnet hands to be super super hard to remove? Am I just not trying hard enough? I will admit that I still have the jitters about potentially damaging him so I could be going at it too gently. But if the hand is indeed glued on, is there anything I can do to fix it or any suggestions at all for what to do? Thank you so much, any and all suggestions are so appreciated!!
If it looks like it's really glued on, you could put that part into a freezer - this would make the glue brittle and you should be able to take the hand off.
I'm not sure about magnet hands but I got used doll who's torso would not come apart. I worried that it had been superglued together. However, the doll had been hot glue sueded and the glue melted inside and stuck the pieces together. I soaked the torso pcs. in hot water (hot, I could put my hand in it, not boiling) and it loosened the glue enough to separate the parts. Maybe you could try that first.
Thank you for the idea! I will try that when I get home tonight, with luck it will be hot glue and not super glue! Thank you as well, if the hot water idea does not work I will definitely try this next! Thank you both immensely, it means a lot to me!
I would also suggest hot water! Every time I have to soak or dye a doll (so, in hot water) someone's magnet falls out because the glue loosens. So I'd assume it would work just as well if you're doing it on purpose.
Awesome! I definitely have a game plan then. Thank you so much! Another question if it is okay. You mentioned dying dolls, my boy was dyed by a previous owner as well, would the hot water potentially damage the dye job or is there no need to worry? I totally did not think about that until you mentioned dye.
It shouldn't do - my dyed dolls have taken a lot more than a dunk in hot water when I wanted to remove the dye on parts that needed stripping and redying Teddy
