Please scroll down to see more update posts and pictures! Please see post #84 for some preliminary sales info ________________________________ When I first saw all these gorgeous dolls, I thought "I want one!" But unfortunately, I cannot afford one right now. So then I thought, "I'll make one!" Cause I never turn away a new artistic challenge. I started on a MSD sized one, But she is taking a very long time to make. And I do not have a very good attention span. So I set my sights a little smaller. Gloxinia stands at just about 7 inches tall, and I just can't help but to love her all to little pieces! And she took less then half a box of Super Sculpey to make. I originally made her legs a lot longer, but I didn't like them. I haven't gotten the other leg shortened yet, so that's why she only has one in this pic. A close-up of her little hans and feet. They were hard! But I think they came out so good! Close-ups of her head. For some reason, I just could not get a decent profile picture after I hollowed her head out. So this one is from after I baked it but before hollowing it out. You can see how small her head is in my hand, and I have very small hands! My little sister was nice enough to let me invade her personal space so that I could get her ears just right. ^.~ And after looking at this pic, I realized she had a fat little chin. I have already shaved that part off. But I did like how her lips came out. They kinda remind me of that sleeping elf sculpt, but without the fangs. Sorry, I really can't remember the name of it. And here are a few extra pics jsut for the fun of it. I would show her posability, but I don't have the right elastic for her yet. The stuff she's strung with now is way too thin. The poor girl is all... floppy. Please tell me what you think of my girl!
She's cute! I'm amazed at the detail you managed to achieve with her hands and feet - that must have been so difficult!
MaryKinTX- Thank you! This is the only real sculpting I've done since I was about ten. kitsuneudon- Yeah, they were kinda hard, but worth it! I appriciate your input cause I really admire your boy Adam. And, wow that was FAST!!! Less than an hour to approve my thread! Last time I tried it took nearly a week just to tell me that my thread was not approved. I guess the extra pics really did help!
Shes so pretty and small Her breasts look ever so slightly crooked, but other than that, shes coming along beautifully.
Thanks, Bella! Coming from you, that really means a lot! I think you might be right linetramp. I will take a closer look!
I've had so much fus sculpting my little girl! My friends keep telling me I'm getting obsessed *mutters a retort while still bent over the doll* Update: I've got all her pieces to an almost finished state. She can STAND! That made me really happy. A pic of her cute little backside. Hanging out on top of my leftover SS. And then in my hand. A couple more of her face. I can't help it. She came out 10 times better than I could have hoped. I used all of atristic skills at my disposal to get her just right. I scared myself to death when i chipped one of her eye sockets wide open. But she's all better now. SS is my friend. And this one is just for fun. She was sitting there just like that the whole time I was resculpting her legs. She was very bored, and maybe a little annoyed at me for taking so long. I swear I kept expecting to see her tapping her itty bitty fingers! Anyways, I was thinking of trying to cast her in resin, maybe even selling her. Would anyone be interested? She is about 7in or 17.5cm That's just about 1/3 the size of an SD size doll. So at the very least she would be a cute accessory for an SD!
Wow, she looks great, I love the view of her back, the details are amazing! I dont know if I would buy her XD since I'm poor, and I love to see the face with face up first, cous that show's the posibility. But I'm sure there are other people around that do have the money to buy her ( or, I dont know if you have seen my mermaid in progress, if she comes out will in resin, we could do a trade if you would consider that I would love it XD )
Thank you! I did see your little mermaid girl and I really like her so far. I would be thrilled to trade with you if we both make it that far!
wow, she's so cute! I'm thinking of trying some more attempts to sculpt some tinies.. but the one I'm sort of working on now... I just can't seem to sculpt her head 8'D Wherever did you get the tiny elastic? If you want to do a quick and dirty faceup on her, you can use watercolour pencils, they work pretty nicely on SS I've found They will stain the SS if you don't use a sealant, but if you're planning to cast her in resin, I don't suppose it'll matter
Thanks, Prysm! The beading aisle or your local craft store is an indespensibe asset. The elastic I got is meant for beads. There are at least a dozen different kinds to choose from. But I haven't found one yet that has enough tension to help her keep her ams posed. I'm probably going to try and give her a faceup soon. Tahnks for the tip! ^.^
Your little one is looking great, and it's your first doll!! I would say that you will be going places if you keep this up, which I hope you do. I'll be stalking this site to see her progress and more pictures.
She is adorable. You might look in a fabrics store for elastic cord that's skinny. It should be thicker than the bead elastic, so hold more tension.
Yay, I have a stalker! *glomps Bruny* Thank you Krissy. You might not see it in the crummy pics, but I'm really happy about the nice curve of her inner thighs. and thank you LauraJ for the advice. ^.^
She's beautiful! You're very talented. I could never sculpt my own doll, I'm not very artstic except when it comes to photography.
She's really adorable--and so small! D: She has a wonderfully curvy body ^_^ And I like her face shape, it's gentle and pretty.
Thank you all so much for you comments! At the suggestion of Hasel (whose mermaid is freakin adorable!) I decided to give my girl a quickie face-up. I know her eyes are funny, cause I made them myself. They're only about 6mm. I tried to put them in a little too soon, so they warped a little. They're just sculpey painted up all nice and glossed with clear nail polish. It was fun to make them. I'll probably wipe her face-up off soon so I don't stain the clay. I'm sorry the pics are not the best quality. Cameras are not my friend.
Aww, Thanks! ( psst, I'm sculpting a second head for the body I will post pic's soon!) I love her with the face up, she looks adoreble She kinda reminds me of a more mature looking tanned snowhite XD
I love her, her body is nice full, she is the perfect size, I love tiny's and I am sure a lot of tiny lovers want her.
i love her! is this really your first attempt...? *looks down at the garbled mess of clay in my hand that was MENT to be a doll*...>_>;; i think her hips are my fave part she's so good!!
Hasel - Thank you. the face-up was your idea, really. Is 'tanned Snowhite' a conflicting statement? I wait with bated breath to see an update of your girl. wilkies - Thank you! I would be so very happy if when I figured how to cast her properly I can share her with the bjd loving community. Laamberry - Yep. First try. But I love drawing people. So it was just a matter of forcing my hands to do in 3D what they are already used to doing in 2D. Keep trying! And post your attempts! We wanna see! And thank you! Everyone seems to like her hips. I personally like her nice full tush.
that may be my second fave part xD her back is very nicely sculpted, btw the more i look at her the more i'm really becoming one of her fans xD i'll be sure to keep up with all her progress
one word 's the hands and feet!!!! i know it must have been so hard as sculpey is a bit of a headache!!
Thankies! They were my favorite part to make, cause I'm a sucker for dainty fingers and toes. I actually like Super Sculpey. It's a lot less oily than Sculpy III and it is not too firm. Plus, it never hardens, so it can be a pain in the butt as long as it wants. I have all the time I need to beat it into submission.
Wow, she's incredibly tiny. I really love how curvy her body is. That's definitely one thing I'd like to see more of BJD, because so many female body sculpts are so very slim. I love working with Sculpey, myself, but I have noticed that it breaks easily, even if you are gentle with it. Something that's very similar, but more resistant to breaking is a material called Cernit. Apparently, many doll sculptors use it, and I've seen it sold on several doll supply sites. If you don't have any problems with breakage, I wouldn't worry, but if you do, there are more choices for sculpting.
she looks so darling now, makes me happy. She's really coming along. I love how you did her backside *flutters away dreaming of Gloxinia* And obsession is good to an extent so keep at it. Bella
Thanks to everyone! I'm going to order casting supplies for her really soon. Do you think that since she is so tiny I could get away with just using one of the starter kits? I was thinking about using the Alumilite Super Casting Kit. Or would I not have enough? If I do end up selling casts of her, How much should I charge? I was thinking about $175. Is that too high? I'm just not really sure. I would also be happy to barter casts of her in trades. Gloxinia is a genus of flowers with several species included. It comes in a variety of shapes and colors including reds, purples, pinks and whites, and often resemble violets or bell flowers. In the language of flowers, Gloxinia means "love at first sight". Just thought I'd share that.
From experience the starter kits only have enough to cast about half of the doll, and you still need to leave room for mistakes (I've gone through 4 different kinds of silicone and rubber, and finally decided that the one that takes the longest to cure(TinSil 70-25) is the best one to use for casting.) This isn't always the case though, I would order some samples and see what you prefer to work with. Don't invest too much unless you KNOW it's going to work well. First see how much you spend on making her. $175 is a little pricey for me but I'm pretty sure there are plenty of others who are willing to pay that much, unless you're including a lot of extras with her and shipping is included as well. If I didn't include the eyes, wig, and clothing I would probably only sell Echo for $230 (but since she's an oddly sized doll I felt it was better to include these little extras) Let me know if you have any other questions. Bella
Thanks Bella!! I think the starter kit will at least give me a decent place to start. Okay. That makes sense. I was going to order some eyes for her. I have some fur for wigs, but I haven't made an attempt yet. So she would probably end up coming with eyes, a wig, and as nice a dress as my meager sewing skills are capable of producing. Since she is so itty bitty, I was planning on doing her face-up for free. Thanks again!
Sounds like a plan ^_^, I have somebody making the eyes for Echo as well. Might as well keep it to the artists of DOA ^_^ Bella
yep it's l33tprincess , her urethane eyes are really coming along and she's gotten rid of all the bubbling so I have her making eyes for me ^_^ I'm really excited too, I can't wait to see what colors she comes up with! Bella
Oh! I saw those! I even asked her if she could make them in 6mm! Now I think I have to officially ask her to try!
More updates! I decided after sanding Gloxinia for goodness knows how long that I should probably gesso her. So I've been doing that. I'm using Liquitex paint on gesso, and I really like the result. If I let it dry for about a day, it sands like a dream. I haven't sanded it down perfectly smooth yet, but I'm getting there. I'm glad I decided to gesso because I found several flaws in her face that I was able to fill in. I would love to hear what you think of my girl. And anything I can improve on for my next bjd.
I love your girl, the body sculpt is great, I have been stalking this thread to see how she's coming along.
What kind of clay do you use to sculpt her? I see many of artists often use this kind of clay. I think you're really talented ! She really pretty little girl!! keep good job. ^_^
Laamberry- That's okay. You know I luv ya anyways. Starlight_Mask- Thanks! Yay, I'm worthy of an adjetive like incredibly! Kearsy- Thanks for the attention for my little girl! kesschan- Thanks a lot! I like your boys too. I use Super Sculpy. It's not very expensive and can be found in almost any general craft store. It can sometimes be very difficult cause it can get too soft when handled, but it's also very forgiving when it comes to repairing mistakes after baking it. Mistakes like, oh, chipping half an eye socket off...
too soft?!?!?! everytime i've broken out a box of the blasted stuff it's been too hard to even work! i think i was fooled...rather then buying sculpy they sold me bricks in disguise! meh...maybe it was just old...
It gets too soft after handling. I know what you mean. I had to knead the b'Jesus out of mine before it would cooperate with me. When you knead it, do it on a clean glass surface to keep the clay clean.
awesome! She looks really really great! Can I make one suggestion? She's going to need a little more to the back of her head/forehead or else her wig is not going to stay on very well during play... Anyway, I love her proportions and her cute little feet~~
Thank you, I was noticing that in her more recent photos. I'll just take off the gesso and smooth some more clay onto her headcap. BTW, I LOOOVE your little robot girl! So cyuuute!!! A compliment from you is high praise indeed.
I'm in love. she looks nice and thick and she's busty with junk in the trunk. this is a beautiful doll!
and you did more than a fantastic job! I'm working on making my first doll right now ^^;; she's chubbeh
Found you! She's sooooo cute! I can't believe her size, too. I used to make 1/12 scale dolls and they weren't nearly as good as this! She looks like she poses well. Trying to think where I got cording for stringing the little dolls...I think it was Jo-Ann's in the elastic section. There's a round elastic cord that is very small but bigger than beading elastic. You could try that (if you haven't found something already) . I think you've done a very good job on her!!!
