Sewing General Sewing Links

Mar 14, 2009

    1. Thanks for share these useful links

    2. Edit: I think this probably should have gone under Patterns... but I'm not sure...
its more of a reference list..

not sure if this is relevant. or how many members are in Canada.
But I figured this could be a good reference list for anyone doing any type of sewing and an alternative to Fabricland.

And I figured since shipping from out of country kind of sucks sometimes,
here's a list of my current favourite online fabric stores. (mostly west coast).
(this might also work for people in the States but I'm not sure)

      https://www.purelinenenvy.ca
east coast, can't remember where S:
really, really affordable linen. wide range of colour selections and weights.
Used to do a flat rate shipping, not sure if they are anymore.

      Dressew Supply Ltd.
in-person store in Vancouver and online.
really good for basics, especially for rayon, viscose and cotton lawns/voiles/ and quilting cottons.
really good for stocking up on buttons and notions if you're in-store shopping!
they have a wide selection and shipping is a flat rate!

Blackbird Fabrics | Shop Modern Garment Fabrics Online
      strictly online,
a bit higher end. caters more towards garment making.
smaller stock, but they cycle through lots of fun prints in the summer and wools in the winter.
      free shipping over $150.

      www.galafabrics.com
      online and in Victoria B.C.
I have mixed feelings about this one, definitely more pricey but you can sometimes find gems in their sale wools $10/m.
swatches are free but they are small, but definitely order swatches before you purchase the more fun wools. the pictures sometimes don't convey textures and weight very well.
(they have this mini houndstooth that I think would be a perfect BJD size pattern... https://www.galafabrics.com/shop/sale/fabrics-sale/sale-fabrics-fashion/woollen-mini-houndstooth-over-check-suiting/)

      oursocialfabric.ca
      Vancouver B.C.
      non-profit, online-mostly.
they get fabric in as donations, so oftentimes you're limited in the quantity you can get, and sometimes it's in pre-cut lengths.
but I have gotten some lovely rayon lining for $3/m and some fun vintage wools, but I've also gotten some weird silk canvas thing (it was the right colour for a project...)
shipping is not flat rate and you do take a bit of a gamble as there's no samples. things like the silks and wools also go really fast.

there's also Core Fabrics | Sustainable + Ethical Online Fabric Store east coast as well.
But I've never ordered from them. they are in partnership with Closet Core Patterns.

      For Corsetry there's
      www.farthingalescorsetmakingsupplies.com and www.braandcorsetsupplies.com
with farthingales I had weird consistencies with their busks, I have 3 and they all have different... bendy-ness.. (I have not purchased busks from braandcorsetsupplies but a friend of mine has and they were not as bendable as the farthingales ones.)

I hope this list is helpful!
please feel free to add to the list, It would be amazing to get a giant reference list going!
