There are a bunch of sewing, knitting and clothes threads, but I don't think I've seen a furniture thread! So, I'm starting one, and what better way to start than ask for some help? My current project is a kitchen table for my MSD kids. One of them is about 42 cm and the other is 45 cm. I'm making the table out of wood and trim, but I just don't know how tall it should be. I also want to make the chairs, but again I don't know how high the seat should be. Any info/advice would be great! Also, post what furniture you've made or are working on to inspire people
Hi. My brother-in-law recently made me some furniture for my sprite (msd bbb sprite) wardrobe - open wardrobe - closed sofa bed
I would also love some information on where to buy already made furniture or patterns for my MSD Souldoll Soulkid Yoni. I have a lot of clothing patterns and have a lot of tutorials online for clothing but nothing for furniture. I have searched hundreds of doll websites and so far, have only found one that sells furniture and that is Volks. However, at $485 for a chair, I know I will not purchase anything there. I recently got lucky and found a Dremel on ebay for a very good price to purchased it....I also got a airbrush kit with the compressor that was very reasonable so got it as well. I have a good bit of upholstry fabric I could use but just have not been able to find any patterns or tutorials for furniture except for things made from cardboard boxes that I just don't care for. Great thread idea zomjirate! Hopefully we get some more information!
chrystal- That wardrobe is huge! I want one in my size lol. I love the trim on the sofa and that bed is adorable. Mad props to your brother-in-law for making you such amazing furniture! ilvmakindolls- I have a souldoll soulkid Lev As for purchasing furniture, try the marketplace. There are a few MSD beds for sale right now, but I prefer to make mine just because I don't want to pay so much for shipping. If you want to make furniture, there are a lot of options! I'd try just googling "making a wooden doll bed". There are a few tutorials out there.
I would like to offer you all this site, it's designed for people sized furniture but it offers amazing detailed instructions. http://ana-white.com/ I started a saw horse table and a shelf but neither are finished yet. And in reference to your questions. The standard human table is (if I remember correctly) usually about 30 inches high, so for your MSD's just divide that by 4, unless you want them to look like children at the table then go by SD size and divide by 3. For the chairs can be done the same way, but if you'd like to be a little more exacting for their individual hight measure their legs in a sitting position from their thighs to where the floor.
ana-white.com does have doll sized furniture plans that can be modified for MSDs without much effort. i'm currently working on a modified farmhouse bed for my MSD. i'm making it into a daybed.
I was getting ready to make this apothecary chest on the weekend - plans are in 1/12 scale but I was modifying it and a little scared about the 233 pieces I had to cut out of the wood, and then I found this at a craft store... I was so excited! Here it is Completed Here are some other steampunk themed items I have made recently everything other than the gears made by me gears soldered together by me With the chest/trunk I found measurements in 1:12 and just multiplied it by 2 for 1/6 scale When I made a table I just googled standard table height and standard desk chair height, then I converted the measurements to what I needed.
Look at all this amazing furniture! Makes me wish that I had to resources and skill to make furniture like that. Quantita: I may just have to copy you on the apothecary chest^^ I hope you don't mind. I'm also interested in doing a steampunk room for my msd, got any tips? subscribing to this thread to see all the incoming furniture pictures~
My first doll couch project was a re-uphostered standard doll couch: You can find these at second-hand stores sometimes, and on ebay (for around $30-40 usually). With a little bit of work, they can look ok. But after a while, I wanted something a little more extraordinary. And almost all the furniture out there seems to be very classical or modern, and I wanted something more art nouveau/surreal, so my boyfriend and I made this sofa: I based it on this concept sketch: We sculpted the frame out of super-sculpy, and then made a mold and cast it in resin. The nice thing is that I could make a few more now if I wanted to - but it made me understand the insanely high prices of Volks stuff more. Each sofa takes about 1 gallon of resin, so between the raw material cost and the labor of assembling one, its quite expensive (making the initial mold was over $100 of plaster, and then the silicon as well). Hope that helps give you some ideas though!
The only pics I have of this seat are from photostories, but this is a chair I made for my Medieval SD collection out of some wood cutouts, and it's been decorated with woodburning and an acrylic paint stain:
Elcia- That's a great link! I would make the trundle bed, but I just bought one lol And thank you for the height info! I can finally start measuring and cutting wood pieces. harpers-child- Post pics when you're done! I'm interested to see the finished bed Quanita- ...your furniture...is stunning!!! Keep it up candygears- I had wanted to do a very intricate couch with tree branch trim and feet, and then cast it in resin for stability. Then I looked at the cost of all the materials....and gave up xD Your couch has inspired me to continue working on my plans for more furniture. Maybe soon I'll finish up my cabinet and post it here!
Rosslyn- You posted right before I did lol, so sorry for double posting. I just want to say that your chair is beautiful and I love seeing more medieval doll furniture!
Aw, thanks. I'll get some actual pics of it eventually, and the other furniture I've made for that lot. Thought I'd add to the resources here by linking a few existing "Built/Non-Cardboard" Furniture threads into this one: An Indian Style Divan: http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?467268-Indian-style-divan Elephant Lounge modern style chair: http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?502431-Elephant-Lounge-Chair-Tutorial Lounge chair (not a tutorial) http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?501422-Lounge-chair Fantasy Forest Throne: http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?422363-Making-a-Forest-Throne-WIP-UPDATED-4-29! harpers-child: Oh wow it does! haha opps I missed that. Quanita : I love the apothecary chest! I have to try and make one. One of my girls is an herbalist so she needs plenty of storage for ingredients. candygears : You and your boyfriend are amazing and the first time I saw your set I was blown away and inspired. I especially love the style. You are right most doll furniture are modern or victorian-esque. Both are nice if your character fits, if not things are harder to find.
candygears....amazing work! That is quite exquisite!!!! I wish I were able to do this kind of work but I have found that sculpting just isn't my "cup of tea". I think I will stick to other media...lol. Thanks everyone for sharing all this wonderful information! I will have to try the converting thing and use patterns for full size. That might work for me!
I have a SD wardrobe that is huge -- about 2.5 feet tall and wide. You can click on the photo to load the notes which describe the features. The Doll Wardrobe by rainwaltz, on Flickr This is the upper half, where clothes are hung. The area is actually full now (ahahaha...) so my dad is going to make another wardrobe, not from scratch like this one was but by refurbishing a chest of drawers instead. Everything was made by my dad, from the little wooden hangers to the box where I keep paper flowers.
@candygears - I love the sculpting work on that couch! What did you use for the sculpt? I need to do something intricate like that for a throne I'm working on for my dolls.
Wee, thanks guys! (I get a bit obsessive about building things, he he...) Yaks, we used super-sculpey, baked it, and then made a mold & cast it in resin. The sculpey alone is too brittle to really work as the final medium if its going to be supporting a doll's weight or anything. You could build a rough frame out of apoxie sculpt though, and then do the final details on top in a medium that holds details better (there's a few 2-part sculpting mediums meant for miniatures that work pretty well).
I have to second everyone else Candygears. I had a look at your gallery+ thread of that work and just stared and stared and stared. Totally flabbergasting in scale and drama, not too mention creatively magnificent. I had to sit here and think if I could come up with better words to describe your work, because I still don't think I am conveying how fantastic your work really is.
I made a chair a while back, and posted the pattern for it. It's a really simple design, and could be made from wood, cardboard or maybe even foamcore. The back piece can be customized to whatever you please.
How amazing. I want to learn how to craft these so badly. My Dolls need furniature. They sleep in their boxes....
OH My Gosh! This is stunning! It seems worthy of a Lady Gaga scenography. You're seriously talented. All of it is made of resin? You should seriously start your own line of furniture and art, not just for dols but for us mere mortals as well! This is beautiful work, detailed, intricate and most important, avant gard. COngratulations!
Hey Mods, i dont know how to delete this post that I accidentally posted twice. please remove it. thanks so much and sorry!
I'm impressed with all of your work, what fun you must have. I want to try some of your ideas. Thank You
If you want some good cheap furniture tutorials check out MyFroggyStuff on youtube. She doesn't own ball joint dolls necessarily but she's very good at showing you how to modify her tutorials for your doll. She uses very cheap affordable materials. (Scrap fabric, cardboard, Popsicle sticks) and it looks very professional!
I'm currently working on a 1/4 scale king sized bed. I found the plan through this site http://freewoodworkingplan.com/ and it's this http://www.hgtv.com/home-improvement/how-to-build-a-bamboo-platform-bed/index.html plan specifically. Just a matter of doing the math to scale it own(though do recommend converting everything from inch to centimeters Right now I just have a prototype that I've done out of foamcore board done, and I'm looking for some thin plywood or basswood to make the finished bed.
Currently working on a park bench for a planed photo story~ I am in the middle of "aging" it now and then I am going to add graffiti X3
I used to make 1/6th size furniture before i got into bjds... so I've slowly been getting more and more into making the bjds stuff. X3 i am obsessed with miniature furniture. Should it be called bigature? they seem like they're the same size as some of the bigature sets they blow up on films! I made this chair a while back out of cardboard and batting and hobby lobby fabric. I MISS hobby lobby. ;D; the closest one is too far for me to drive to... it's across the bay. :/ I made this dresser out of a papermache box, some scrap booking filigree and wooden blocks. The mirror is from Bed and Bath, the tuffet is a large candle holder with a hand made pillow, and the dresser is a cabinet that I pulled the handles off of and replaced with beads. It's all in 1/4th scale. :3 I didn't make the chair, I found that at Joann's! I want to try this: http://www.condoblues.com/2011/02/worlds-cutest-reclaimed-four-poster-dog.html It seems like if I got the right length of table it would fit the dolls. If I can't find the right sized table I might just buy posts and make a bed like that now that i have a freaking drill. e____e;; everything so far has been made from hot glue and cardboard or chip board. I hate using saws and my dremel won't take a screwdriver bit!
I got the idea for this chair from someone else, and wouldn't you know, I can't find the thread now! Ergh... so sorry, whoever made it before me! Anyway, I made it from two cardboard craft boxes (oval shape), one forming the base (and handy storage space!) and the other the seat. Covered the seat in foam batting and upholstery fabric, and put everything together with glue. The only sewing was for the ruffle on the bottom. Little Jake wants to know if they'll be getting a big-screen TV soon.
my friend's resinsoul for a weight test when it was varly wood and cardboard the wood outline painted all pretty before I age it lol And the aging is now done~ I would love to see some graffiti to inspire me if anyone has any suggestions?
I recently finished making this (Used an old shelf that I pretty much had buried in my room and wasn't using.) :

I would like to address the OP's original question on how to go about scaling furniture projects! I'm not really fond of numbers and measurements, so when I made my dolls' sofa, I went about scaling in a unique way. I used masking tape to make marks on myself and my doll to ensure exact scale! I stood next to my real sofa and put a piece of tape on my leg for the height of the couch without cushions, the height with cushions, the height of the armrest, and the height of the back of the couch. Then I simply put tape on my doll's leg on the same places it was on mine, and used those as my guidelines when making the cardboard base for the couch out of a Bobobie doll box. I don't have a finished picture of just the couch, but I do have one with all my dolls all over it...
lol, noooooooo I'd be broke lol :p O_O all of you are so talented, its truly inspiring! here are some I've made they are both 1/12 scale :3 Gonna agree with the others that for scale it is best to see how tall you are to a table/chair/ect. then relate that to your doll, thats how I do it :3 also the book case is made out of popsicle sticks :P
Someone should But I made do with a IKEA Duktig bed. It was transformed to be a double bed for MSD. [/IMG] Also I made this double couch for MSD [/IMG]
What an adorable couch!!!! The roses are a great touch! And it's nice to see your version of such a simple bed. The stickers look great!
Well, I used an Ikea fabric for upholstering this MSD-sized sofa I made for my dolls. In fact it's made of a box clementines are sold in at the supermarket which I turned upside down and modded with strong and thick cardboard. Sadly only two dolls fit on it comfortably. D=
Thank you! Actualy those are not stickers it is a tecnic with the printed paper or ribon roses and varnish. It ended up neat
Wow, there is so much inspiration here! I want to make furniture so bad! I'm just not sure what to make it with. I made a wardrobe from cardboard and duct tape, but it looks >.> not so good. I want to try an sculpt chairs with nice legs but I'm not sure what to use. I don't want to have to make something then cast it in resin, while it looks great it sounds like too much of a pain for me. So keep up the wonderful ideas, if I ever get something made i'll post it here!
I feel ya AmayaBambi! I keep thinking a cardboard couch or chair would be terrible, but these look great! I would like to have/make/see a king sized bed for MSD's. I hate how expensive "good" furniture is, and how a lot of other doll furniture is too pink/girly. I've looked into pet furniture, but that's even more expensive. I saw some chairs made out of PVC pipe and it got me thinking about BJD furniture. I'd also like to see an awesome kitchen that's not pink or expensive... but yeah... probably have to make one somehow.
It's sort of crap but here's a chair i made, im probably gonna add more to it though (sowwie for the large picture)
These are a next-to-no-budget quick fix, but my dolls like them all the same: Tutorial may be found here.
MAN. What a great thread. Gives me waaaaay too many ideas. I like a lot of these cardboard ideas. I think I've got an old pattern-pressed cardboard dinner mat that might carve up nicely for some siding. Hmmm...
I have a couple pieces of furniture I've made for my dolls, all MSD sized so far They have a bunk bed that I made out of some old shelving bits, some leftover pipes we had out in the shed, and a lot of my dad's help welding it together. I did all the mattress and blanket stuff myself. They also have a couch and a been bag chair I made them. The couch was made out of an old CD stand and a bunch of foam.
Great thread. Finding things in the appropriate size for 1/4 and 1/3 scale dolls can be challenging. I had to condense from a 2800 sq. ft. house to a 900 sq. ft. house and had to sell many of the furniture pieces I had collected ... a beautiful brass swing chair, a canopy bed, all my large horses, part of my wicker furniture collection, two wardrobes, along with a large collection of 1/6 scale items. I am constantly finding things that would be the right size for my girls, but now I've got no where to store them. Hopefully I will be able to build a custom shelf to set up small rooms for my dolls so I can display them.
Last night I finally buckled down and made a couch for my SD couple to lounge on. I'd been putting it off because I didn't have any nice cardboard, but I managed to snag a couple good-sized pieces from work yesterday. I forgot to take a "before" picture, but it started out as a little wooden curio-dresser thingy I found at Goodwill. You can kind of tell what it looked like from this picture, which was before I added the fabric: Basically, at this point I had taken the back off and sawed off the rounded edges and attached it to the front of the top to extend the "seat", then added a new cardboard back and sides at the correct height. I traced the original curve of the old short back onto the new back, but I ended up hacking it off because I realized I'd have to actually sew the fabric to get it to look right and I was feeling too lazy for that. And here it is after I added the fabric, which has some low-loft quilting batting under it for a padded look. I just hot-glued everything together, and there are a few places where I messed up, but overall it looks pretty good: I wanted to keep the cubbies underneath for clothes storage, but I didn't want to leave them visible, so I made a removable front with another piece of cardboard which attaches to the front of the couch with some pieces of black velcro. I also made two matching throw pillows. Here's the finished couch. If Layla was here right now, she'd be yelling at him to get his boots off the furniture.
I needed more seating so I stuck somecardboard boxes together and covered it in low quilt padding. Then I covered it in upholstery fabric I had laying around. The arms were too low so I added some pillows. The finished chair. The little feet were finials from craft dept. Remi and the robot enjoying the new comfy seat.
