Front view sketch of 71 cm male doll

Dec 27, 2010

    1. I want to make a doll to look like my favorite video game but can also look like his own person too. This will be my first doll to make. I own an Iplehouse Mars and I used him for reference for the joints. Please let me know what I can do to improve anything at all! I'm a total noob. I will do a side view sketch later. I want to know if there is anything I need to do or add or edit to this sketch first.

Sorry it's a little blurry. I'm not good at drawing hands and feet. :o I feel like his legs are too skinny or long, but I don't know. That's why I'm posting here! :) I do want his legs to be kinda thin, since a lot of guys I know have thin legs (compared to mine anyway) and I wanted him to have that look.

    2. I'm not too sure, but I feel that his hips are a bit too thin. His laps could maybe be a bit bigger if you feel that his legs are too thin but they're not too bad imo. Also, the hip piece should be a bit wider vertically, I'm not sure if I'm very clear but I could always scribble on the picture with photoshop. His feet might be a bit tiny but it might come from the front view (feet are difficult to draw!). I hope this helps!

    3. Thank you! I can try making his hips a little wider, and then his legs can be a little wider too. You mean make his hips longer/taller? I didn't notice before but they do look short. I'll edit that too.

    4. You're welcome! ^^
Making his hips wider might instantly help with the legs since you'll probably have to adapt them~

And yeah I meant to make then taller, like over his peen. I haven't done a doll before but I'm not sure if a piece that thin would work well, and it might look weird so I suggest making them taller as you said.

    5. Yes, I agree! Thank you for your help. :) I will post a picture after I fix it. I didn't say this before, but his torso will have only one joint, under his chest.

    6. Ok I edited his hips and thighs a little. I think it looks better. I know some things are crooked here and there but I am just now noticing them lol.

Edit: I edited a few more things, I tried to even out his feet but they still look crooked, maybe it's just the way I took the picture.

    7. Comparing the first and second sketch I can see that the hips are much much better. The feet also look less tiny so that's definetly a good thing.

As for the face I must say it looks very good. I've been told my character's lips are too thin, but I doubt yours will be a problem, they look awesome~

Oh yeah and just a tip or two: When you'll be sculpting the feet, if I remember well the lenght of the feet is approx. the same lenght of the face, and the forearm (the part that connects to the hand) is about the same lenght as the foot. I've just checked on myself and it seemed similar. So if you fear your feet will be too small you can make them about the lenght of the face when sculting. :)

    8. Thank you! That's very helpful. :) I have a feeling his arms are a bit too long, though... I just noticed it last night. I'm not sure. What do you think?

    9. No I think they're fine. Adult arms usual reach the lap (calves? not sure how they're called in english xD).
Or I think outstreched arms are supposed to equal the height of a person, but I don't remember exactly, xD I usually just let my adult character's arm reach a bit higher than the middle of the lap/calve and for children or pre-adolescent I make it a bit shorter.

    10. Oh, ok! Thank you! I noticed that my Iplehouse YID Mars doll's arms are a bit shorter, but he's not a full adult I don't think.

    11. The face is great you shouldn't need to make any more work on the face IMO. The body I think maybe you want the crouch part to hang lower and maybe be wider (I don't know if this is understandable) the hips seems slightly "short" as in vertical length, also I think the upper part of the leg (the femoral bone) should be longer while the lower part of the leg should be shorter, that would be more anatomically correct if you really want to go perfectionist about it.

    12. Personally, I'd lengthen the neck a bit and add a bit more mass to the outer thighs. The tapering down from torso to hips and legs just seems a bit extreme to me.
Arms look right to me, too.

Love his face and his fierce expression and the shape of his face. I'm trying to guess which game he's inspired by now....

    13. i'm obviously late on giving critique, as this thread is already old. but i do agree with the things mentioned (cuz at first sight i also had the feeling the hip might be too small). but the reason im writing here is:
WOW i like your bjd scetch, so i'm wondering: how did your doll turn out in the end?
