I decided to resurrect and spruce up an older doll sculpt of mine called Dawn. She definitely changed enough to warrant a new name, so now she's Lydia. This is the collection of random pictures I took along the way lol. Decided to just add more detail in general. She's got balloon boob going on. Bit more natural shape. I also added hip bones and tummy definition. Realized I needed to kill some darlings... Those cheek bones gotta go. Eventually I decided I was ready to print. I'm still pretty bad at mixing skin color from scratch lol. Oh well. Decided to start fixing more tactical things that bugged me. I think I started with the knees. They had decent range of motion but once bent far enough they'd lose tension and dangle? It was weird and annoying. Turned out the peanut bar was too low. I also needed to decide between kneecap or none. I went with kneecap because it made the upper thigh look more proportionate somehow. I ran out of the darker resin color so I decided my next print could get ~experimental~. I used beige resin 1:2 with white resin to get this color. Much easier to mix lol. Anyway I changed the torso joint and added in shoulder beans! Other than a few thin spots that needed beefing up I really like this addition. It breaks up the shoulder line a little, but the range of motion it added is extremely fun. And that's where she's at now! I checked her eye size and it's a perfect 12 which is nice. Now to scrounge up some eyes, a wig, and attempt a faceup.
Alright, I decided its time to spruce up those elbows. The current ones do work, but they look kind of sloppy and have too much give. I started with what I thought would be a simple design? I hate it. I hate it so much. It's so ugly and big and when you bend the elbow the bicep and forearm "cups" extend past the elbow and look weird. So I decided to turn the top of the elbow bean into a ball. Figured it would make the bean less enormous And add the ability to twist in the final motions? Well. Something wasn't right. I had completely forgotten to actually... test the range of motion. Whoops. So after I did that I cut down the bean a bit and trimmed up the bicep cup.. It looked like this. I still kinda hate it?? The bottom of the bean still looks unnaturally long. So I finally consulted some of my other dolls to see how they addressed bean shapes and realized a lot of the ones with the best range of motion had partially internal beans. So I dragged up the forearm a bit and added a ledge to the bean. This holds it higher when bent, and causes the extra cup of the forearm to be much shorter. Now to wait for the print to finish and see if this whole process was nonsense or not.
I really like the added mobility you’re getting from the ball at the top now that you’ve modded that! I think that’s going to make for really good posing. I’m really curious about how it’ll work in conjunction with the bottom joint!
Thank you! Turns out it works surprisingly well! First attempt was close! The arm got too long and the top of the bean channels were crooked somehow, but it works! Once I fixed the little things... I'm in love lol. Heres a lazy photoshoot as I test out various poses.
lol apologies about the broken links. turns out imgur gets persnicketty over nude dolls even if they're "hidden". whoops. Well anyway I've started tweeking her again. Still not sold on the elbows or her face, so I've redone her face to define the lips better and made the eyes bigger.
Thank you! I hope I mentioned but shoulder joints aren't a thing i thought up, lol there's a few gorgeous indie dolls with them that inspired me!
Def think the new face has much more personality and definition. Gotta make her some new eyes that fit and give her a faceup eventually.
I'm dying imgur is just doing me dirty. fixed up the elbows. They've got a bit less mobility now But most of what's lost is what was making so many uncanny valley poses so i do think this is better lol.
