Frog

Aug 10, 2012

    1. It's been years since I've been on, life getting in the way, but I'm back at it again. I need to finish my other projects.... I need to finish a doll and I hope that will galvanize me into action with my other projects I've got sitting uncompleted. So here is what I've been thinking....

If you asked me if I could draw I will always tell you no, but I've found in jotting my ideas down over the years that I'm getting better able at articulating (not sure if that's the right word for drawing?) what I'm visualizing in my head. I'll never be an artist by any means and my sculpt may end up not looking like him at all, but at least I got the idea down. So here it is, my sketched ideas for him.

I didn't like the feet in the first one, they just seemed wrong, so I'll be changing it to this.

    2. omg yes, subscibing to this thread *-*

    3. wow he looks so intresting, cant wait to see :)

    4. Didn't have a lot of time to work on him today, but here's my start:

Sculpey over a Styrofoam ball. I had to cut the ball in half as I didn't want my frog to have a round head, it just seemed wrong. I haven't done the lower part of his head yet, I'm still thinking on it. I think I'll want him to have thin lower lip, with the upper lip hanging over it a bit, but we'll see.

I'm still not sure about the shape of the eyes and there's a lot I need to even out and make uniform. Still very much a w.i.p.

    5. I really like the look of his head! This is one frog that I wouldn't mind kissing to see if he became a prince. One question, how are you planning to bake the head with the styrofoam in it?

    6. I boil my sculpey so it won't be a problem.

    7. I didn't even know you could do that! :D I was sitting here thinking about all the nasty fumes that the foam would make and the damage that would be done to your little frog. I am eagerly looking forward to seeing more, especially that potbelly and how those shoulders turn out.

    8. actually as far as i know as long as you have a fan oven its not problem, i did this by accident when i was yonger and wasnt aware it might cause problems and it turns out all that happens is the styrofoam srinks down really tiny and goes hard... it also leaves the inside a little bobbely

    9. Here's today's progress. I'm still working on evening it out, the head is a bit odd shaped when looking at it from above so I have to fix that and I'm still not sure about the cheeks....

    10. wow he looks so cute
you can tell he'll have real character when he's done :)

    11. Thank you for the encouragement FeyFriend and Smileyalien5.

I'm sorry I haven't posted, I'm not sure I will able to daily, especially given my work schedule. But I have been working on him. LOL! The styrofoam ball never had a chance. I've widdled it down several times as it got in my way.

I finally got some day light pictures for you too. I blended his cheeks and made his smile less prominent. I wanted him to be very basic.

I'm really glad I worked on the head before the body. It's gotten smaller.

Defined the eye bubbles more and I'm still working on the roundness of the back of the head:

I adjusted the contrast on this picture because the tip of his nose was blending into my hand:

See the uneven back of the head. I'm still working on it:

I think I'm almost done with the head and I may get to the body this weekend.

    12. Cute! I love the frog concept, I don't think I've seen it done before :))

    13. Awwww he's so cute! :D i love his cheeks.

    14. Thank you Tootsie and Poochbot. Sarah? I think that's her name, The Mushroom Peddler made a frog called ribbit-ribbit. I don't know if she ever sold it, but I did see it on her sight.

I've worked on the body some this weekend and erm.. note to self, compressed styrofoam expands in hot water LOL! Well it is a learning experience right? I apoxy-sculpted the cracks and on we go. I hope you can see the progress. I also think I may get some eye sizers. I think they'd be great for pressing into the clay to make the ball joints on smaller dolls. I hadn't really seen the need for them before, but like this, I think it would work. As it was I used my eye sanders, which are labeled size to make the round joint spaces for the balls. I'm sanding the body to try and make it rounder.

      He's my progress:

I need to make the ball that goes on the top of the neck and expand the hole in the neck, it's really small right now, but I'm not willing to do that with the sculpey being so fragile.

    15. So adorable!:daisy
