French Resin

Dec 23, 2011

    1. I did a search for any info i can find on french resin but i cant seem to find anything on it. I saw a post where kwmelvin mentioned "french doll" is that the same thing? What i want to know is where to get it or how to make it? and is it really as bad as people say in terms of when it gets discolored? Does anyone own a french resin doll? What are your experiences with it in terms of how its holding up and what not? I love how it seems to glow and would like to possibly cast some of my dolls in it so any info would be very helpful.

    2. It's slightly translucent. It does tend to yellow faster than regular resin, but you can put in UV proofing, or give it a UV-proof spray coating. It seems to be just as strong as regular resin. I've never tried casting it, so I don't know if it has special needs.

    3. @Alewife; Its translucency is absolutely gorgeous. :love with a face- up and body blushing it almost looks like skin.

I heard somewhere that it has to be custom mixed. that they just dont sell it like normal resin. I was wondering if this was true. And if it is how does one go about mixing it? LOL is it more dangerous because different resins are being combined?

    4. I used a brand of French Resin called Axon when I cast my first Tinies a few years back - same as what Bambicrony used for their original coloured Elves.... It was lovely to work with and had a very low odor - but anything that did not have a zinc additive as a UV retardant went Banana Yellow is a short period of time - even without sunlight exposure the surface oxidised in warm environments. An alternative to French Resin's lovely translucent glow is the "new" Canadian Environmental resin - its apparently becoming the rage for that lovely glowy finish. I forget which companies are now using it - but I have seen owners pictures on Den of Angels of dolls made from it and it has that same depth to it. The only draw back to the Environmental resins is some people have reported it gets a waxy sort of sheen to it that French Resin doesnt...

Edit to add: I purchased it straight off the shelf from a casting supply company in Australia - it was as most other companies materials are - in two containers part A and part B equal mix by volume. It could be pre-tinted but I think that was the supplier not the manufacturer.

    5. @whitewings; wow this sounds so exciting. Do you remember what the environmental resin is called?

How did it work for you?

Wow that really sucks that french resin turns yellow like that :pout its so pretty before it turns yellow.

    6. are you still looking for the answer, Poochbot?

Someone told me just now that environmental resin is this thing called eco-poxy resin (made out of soy and nuts)

    7. Yes i am :D lol always searching. I've been stalking the environmental resin thread for quite some time now. Thank you so much :D i'll do some searching around for eco-poxy. I love the idea of non toxic resins and they look awesome. I hear that they are also uv stable. Not sure if that last bit is true though.

*edit* found their website. Thanks :D

    8. EcoPoxy seems to be only for laminating and very limited casting . not for bjds.
