Sewing FREE Pattern: SD Bloomers/Pumpkin pants + sailor collar

May 9, 2016

    1. Bloomers/Pumpkin pants and Sailor collar patterns!

I had the urge to make some baggy shorts for YAGI and drafted some patterns.
I ended up with three actually.

      You can find them HERE
      Print at 100%.

These patterns are based of a Dollfie Dream 3 body, so I highly suggest you experiment with these patterns on scrap/junk fabrics first.

Those of you familiar with Dollfie Dreams might know how pants can be a hassle to fit for these dolls... Wide hips and tiny waists...
I had to fix the rise/inseam on them, as it was too low. I did not want them to rise up too high; I wanted them to hang low.
That is why I drafted another version (2), and yet another version (3) because I wanted shorter ones!
(Though I messed up that fix in the sewing process, I guess, because one leg ended up a little shorter...:huh?:)
Either way, with these patterns you are left with a few options to better suit what you might be after, I hope..!

And also, because I love sailor themed outfits..! I have included a pattern for a sailor collar (cause those can be hard to get right!), that you can just drape over a shirt or attach to an existing sewing project or so. Here is an example of how it could look:

(Note: I have not sewn it shut at the base of the neck)
      without bow:

Sorry for the low quality pictures.

      RULES!
You may NOT sell these patterns!
You may NOT redistribute these patterns!

But feel free to edit the pattern to fit your liking (please credit me though) or sell your finished products.
I would love to see what you make, so please share your project or finished product here!

You can also find my other free patterns HERE

    2. Small tutorial for how I make them, as based on looking at the patterns you might wonder if you got the right pattern and if they are intended for just one doll, based on their large size...

The following was done with "Pattern 3".

First start of with measuring the waist of your doll and write it down (do not forget to add seam allowance) and how wide the waistband should be, if you have a preference.

Then take the pattern of your choice and measure it by the crotch area on your doll, to make an estimate of the length. I wanted a low waist for example.

Next cut out the pattern and a waistband. Remember that you will be folding the waistband in half, so plan the height accordingly. Also, turn the waistband inside-out and sew the edges together and a short bit at the bottom, then turn right side out.
I am sorry for using black! It is not an optimal color for a tutorial, I know...

With the 4 pieces, sew along the edges, as marked in purple.
Now you should have two pieces..! Sew those two pieces together from the waist down to the crotch on one side, leaving one side open.

Now you can begin with the waist. It depends on how you plan to do it though. If you plan on using elastic or not, that is.
I will not be using elastic. I will be gathering.

My sewing machine is pretty basic, so I do not have a gathering stitch (I think it is called that), so for me it is to just up the length and lower the tension. Then sew a simple line at the waist.
      - And then you gather!
Gather accordingly to the length of the waistband and then sew it together.

Trim the excess fabric and zigzag the edge (or other preferred stitch).
      There..! Looking nice!
I suggest you iron your project at this point to get the edge to fold down correctly.

Next up, pin the legs together.
And try it on your fashion victim, to see how they fit.
Too long! So I marked them with a pin at the desired length.

Then, measure the thigh/leg to see how long the "cuffband" should be.
As you can see, A LOT of fabric was unnecessary!
Cut two bands for the leg cuffs and fold in half.

Gather, if necessary/desired and sew it together like with the waist.
Then you can finally sew the legs together..! Then sew from the crotch up, about... halfway maybe..? It depends on how wide they need to go, to get on your doll (unless you are using elastic).
And for this tutorial, they are done!

      Glorious!

I hope this could be of help to those of you who are not too familiar with sewing, and that I have not been too patronizing in my explanation.
This tutorial is very simple, and I know there are tutorials on bloomers out there (in the lolita circles for example), but I wanted to show how I made mine. Do not be afraid to ask questions if there is anything you wonder about either way!
