I just discovered a new friend for mah toolbox! \o/ New "sculpting tool"?! \o/ by Eldurwen, on Flickr It's a cheap ($9-ish?) electric nail...filer? machine thingy from Avon. I've had the idea to try one of these for a while, but I figured going with a cheap one to test it would be wise before buying a bigger/"professional" one? Anywhooo...dremels scare me half to death, and this seems to be a less intimidating option that does a similar job. It's not SUPER quick, but I didn't want something that would drill a hole through the forehead if I slipped while making eye sockets. ^^; Here is what it looks like all "packed up": New "sculpting tool"?! \o/ by Eldurwen, on Flickr As you can see, no cord to get in the way, the one time I tried a dremel the cord kept tripping me up, so I really like this feature... And "unpacked": New "sculpting tool"?! \o/ by Eldurwen, on Flickr New "sculpting tool"?! \o/ by Eldurwen, on Flickr It runs on the single AA battery, it's small and lightweight. Mine came with three bits: New "sculpting tool"?! \o/ by Eldurwen, on Flickr The blue bit is next to useless. I had thought the metal bit would be my favorite, and it does do a decent job shaving off excess clay from large areas, but I'm finding the white (I think it's stone?) bit to be my favorite, the shape is really helpful for eye sockets and smaller stuff, but the sides are wide enough to be able to use in larger areas too~ ^_^ So, just thought I'd ask if anyone else uses a nail machine instead of a dremel? xD
That looks like a nice little tool. Certainly an inexpensive alternative to a Dremel. Let us know what you think of it.
It is certainly slower progress than a dremel, but I'm quite enjoying it sofar. I feel like I have more control, even if it takes longer. ^_^
I have found that the $20 rechargable dremel (7300 minimite) is just wussy enough to be great for this kind of projects. my absolute favorite accessory that I have for it is the chuck! for about $10 I never have to switch a collet again and I can use those tiny drillbits that are as small as a pin!
I had heard about this tool from dog groomers, too... It looks great! I have a dremel & mine has an attachment similar to that. Don't be afraid of your dremels though! I have embraced mine & I can't live without it.
That's the same as mine! It's so handy and a nice size.. I just can't deal with cords so it's nice it's battery charged too. Though I used mine for sanding paperclay with and it actually stopped working after a year due to dust clogup. If that ever happens don't be afraid to open it up and clean everything off, it's simple to do and should work great again. I've actually had to do this twice.
