For Fun: Doll Master the Korean horror movie

Sep 13, 2016

    1. I had heard of this movie when it came out and like many thought i would like to watch it but didn't have to ability to find it at the rental stores. We use to have horror movie night at least once a month and would try to get campy as well as scary [I don't like the modern slash and hack serial killer types but the supernatural thriller ones] After our odd doll and spirit stories and the mention of this flick I looked it up and found I could watch it for free on youtube and did. It gave me many thoughts so I thought we could have some fun and insight to each other by putting this up. I believe in spirits and was raised into cultures that found that normal to believe in. Many Asian and Native American cultures have many basis in spirit beliefs, protocols and ideas, in form varied and very different but definitely present in some way or other. European cultures the same from long ago with stories and legends and levels depending on the areas and groups. It is kind of a universal theme I think all over the globe but very strong in some cultures. So, with this movie [which was a little/lot campy but touched on a few things] some ideas:
What parts did you find most touching? [for me when the one girls doll hugged her, managing to go to her from the chair he had been placed in after she was passed out from trauma then trying to defend her by his head rolling between her and the other, the love Mina had for her owner and willingness to sacrifice herself for her]
What was the most horrifying? [for me, when they burned the dolls]
What did you think of the main heroine and her thoughts and relationship with her doll?
How would the movie have been different if you were in the position of the heroine in it and how would you have reacted in the situation from the start? Your reaction to Mina? Your relationship to Mina once you realized who she was? [imagine, like making your own miniscript story and sharing it, it would be fun]
for those that haven't watched it here is the link I used:

    2. I like this movie and have it on DVD. It's one of my favorite doll-themed movies, for the reasons you mentioned @Katscauldron -- the dolls have souls and are attached to their owners. I disliked the heroine. She was selfish and fickle, and I think Mina was justified in almost poking her eyes out. :)

The creepy toilet dolls are definitely the most horrifying part! :horror:

    3. I've never watched the movie, but I love Korean horror/thriller films! And the fact they're using BJDs in the movie makes me want to check it out even more!

    5. Thank you for posting that! I tried to watch this movie several years ago, but the link ended up broken and I couldn't find it again. I stumbled on this thread completely by accident!

In the movie, I was kind of disappointed that the main character didn't try harder to talk to Mina, I think some problems may have been avoided. Also it was disturbing that they had dolls in the toilet, isn't that expensive and kind of unsanitary? Poor dolls.

...I hope they didn't use real bjd in the final scene...

    6. I came across this movie some years ago, when I got the DVD for Birthday. When I first saw the movie I was kind of disappointed cause the main heroine was so selfish and didn't show a lot of courage to talk to Mina, cause I think there would have been another turn to the movie if that conversation would have taken place.
But the second and third time I watched it I really felt in love with the movie event though there are some really creepy moments (like the already mentioned dolls in the toilets or the ones hanging from the chandeliers...

The last scene where the dolls were burning was a really heartbreaking scene for me, because I felt sad that those beautiful dolls had to burn, cause as mentioned above I think each doll has its individual soul and bond to their owner... and seeing them burn made my heart cry (even though I'm not owning a doll yet >.<)

I wanted to put the link for everyone to see it and rewatch it for those that had!
all the dolls were from Custom House and I am such they were bad turned out molds that were burned. I think everyone feels most vulnerable in stalled toilet and the mannequins were placed there for the most bad effect! What I never understand in these horror movies is people running further into the house, up staris or down into the basements when they would be safer outside especially in the woods.
But many different points of this movie touched me.
I agree the "heroine" though the most caring person in the movie with the exception of the man chained in the basement who truly loved the dolls came to the realization of her and other peoples shortcomings at the end when she blames perhaps human indifference and self absorption [which she truly was guilty of] to object they imbue with spirit as well as their bad actions creating bad situations. Her treatment of Mina was cruel beyond superficial protocol before she knew who she was to worse afterwards imo. There is also the classic vindication of a horrible wrong taken into major excess by the spirit that was in the doll: first for the rape/murder of the woman she represented and more so for her murdered creator, which she truly loved. I decided I got too extreme and into other movies so snipped this a bit. One thing can hit me and remind me of a thousand more that is how my mind works!

    8. Thanks so much for telling us about this movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it made my whole evening!! I think we all felt the pain of the girl holding the doll when the others didn't get why it was special to her, and when they tried to touch it. If you are like me, you enjoyed seeing the main character get hurt when she picked up the doll so roughly after the girl fainted, even though she was trying to give it back to her. And also her devastation when the doll was broken. I am so jealous that the doll looked so much like the human version of Mina. Who wouldn't like to have a BJD of themselves? I thought the doll holding the mirror was cool. I agree the toilets were the most horrifying. What do you think about the part when they said was it the dolls fault or the neglectful owners? My family had to hear me scream and freak out that there were BJDs in the movie and again when they showed the room with the wall-to-wall BJDs in perfect glass cases, "My dream!!" My mother-in-law who is 78 loved the movie too and kept telling my son to get out the way when she couldn't see it. I told my kids, "See, that's what happens if you touch my dolls!!" but I was only joking because they all respect my passion. My husband was jealous that there isn't a movie about his hobby. We can only hope that another such movie will be made again, soon!!

    10. @Katscauldron Thanks for the link! I'd always heard about this movie and was glad to finally see it. It's funny, I saw an owner pic of a Mina doll around the time I first joined the hobby and always liked it but never knew the history of it.
I'm wondering though, if they were really burning dolls at the end, wouldn't the fumes be toxic?

    12. I thought it was a fun thing to share once I found it out there to be watched by all. Any type of burning of plastic or resin would be kinda toxic imo but I would think in the open not life threatening but am not an expert on it in any way. I still feel as the doll makers were actively connected to the production they probably used pieces that didn't come out quite right or maybe plastic copied either way sad and a feeling of loss.

    13. Heh. Maybe they hunted down and burned a bunch of recasts? Karma. ;)

I got this movie a few years back as a gift from JunkySpot when I'd purchased a doll from the store around Christmas. I LOVE Asian horror and finding out there was one focused on BJDs? Brilliant! As everyone else said, the life-size dolls scattered around the house in weird positions (like dangling from the ceiling) definitely pushed me into Uncanny Valley. I dunno about anyone else, but I'd be sleeping in the car, not under a doll STARING me in the face all night!

Most touching scenes were toward the end with Mina reuniting with her owner. Well, at least until it all went to hell.

And the glass cases with those perfect, gorgeous dolls all lined up... Collector's heaven! :D

The saddest/most horrifying scenes were probably the destruction of those dolls. All I could think of was "All that expensive resin! How many thousands of dollars is that right there?!" :XD:
