Contest Flight (Prop/Accessory)

Jul 2, 2009

    1. NOTE: Due to the fact that several sites are advertising our contests, we have had some people joining just to enter our contests. We don't feel that this is fair to our current members. If you joined after July 6th, you may not enter the flight contest.

Continuing with our (overdone) angel theme, this challenge focuses on flight.

      Description and Rules

Entrants are asked to construct a prop that would enable a doll to "fly." This may be in the form of wings, flight apparatus, or even flight-related vehicles.

Found objects may only make up a portion of your submission. For example, it would be all right to use part of a toy plane as the base for a jetpack. However, if you just strapped the toy plane to the doll's back, that would not be admissible. You must credit any parts that you did not make yourself.

The doll does not actually need to fly. That said, it should be visually apparent how the prop would work if it was actually operational. (So making a magic wand and saying "he flies by magic" isn't going to work.)

      How to enter

Each member may submit ONE entry.

You may submit up to 3 different photos to show your entry. One view should show the full entry. At least one photo must show the object modelled on an on-topic doll, or pictured with an on-topic doll to show scale. If it is a vehicle, it is expected that the doll would be able to fit inside or ride on it. (You can combine both of these requirements into one photo).

Your images can be maximum of 400x600 px (orientation of portrait or landscape is not important). The format must be .GIF or .JPG.

Please include a description of what your prop is and how it "works." If it is made from other items, please list those items. (A portion of moderator voting will focus on how much of the item is made from scratch.)

Please send your entry to Truffle. You must put a note in the subject of the PM stating that the entry is for the Flight Contest.

There should be no personally identifying information on the photos - no name, username, email, or watermark.

Do not post your entries elsewhere prior to completion of voting; doing so will remove your entry from the contest. If you wish to discuss your entry with friends, please do so privately. As with the winter contests, we wish for the entries to be anonymous in order to make voting more fair.

The winner will be chosen by a combination of moderator and member voting.

Entries must be received by August 15th.

      Voting

The voting period (and exact method of voting) is still yet to be decided.

      Prizes

The creator of the winning entry will receive a new, unpainted Asleep Eidolon Jiao Jr., generously donated by our own Virtue, julia.

All entrants will receive a graphic badge for their signatures.

The first prize will be sent to the winner by the middle of September, barring complications. Please note that the winner is responsible for postage.

    2. Oh how fun. I have so many ideas floating around for this. YAY

    3. Does the size of the accessory matter? Like can we make it for tinies or does it have to be for 60 cm? Thanks. ^^

    4. It can be sized for any on topic doll.

    5. oh boy. This is right up my alley! I'm certainly gonna try to enter this one =D

    6. ok i have i'm sure a stupid question, but does floating count the same as flying?

    7. It depends on what sort of floating you mean? A parachute, for example, would not count.

    8. oooooooh.....I've got some fun ideas here....need to get a new wig and eyes....hmmm.....

    9. what about hot air balloons?

    10. Hot air balloons would be fine.

    11. i was thinking more along the lines of lift, than "falling with style" (i'm sorry i'm watching that right now XD) but yes, lift more so than a controlled fall.

    12. This sounds fun, but I don't think I'm cut out for it, lol. XD

      Good luck everyone!

    13. Can the flying item be a plushie, or must it mechanically based?

    14. I'm not sure what you mean. PM me with your idea and I'll let you know.

    15. Ah, it's such a shame that I do not yet have a doll of my own - I would have loved to have built a flying machine prop to enter ;_;
I also don't have any friends that own dolls, so even using another's doll is out of the question.
      Ah well.
Good luck to everyone that does enter <33

    16. Would a prop that was sculpted or attached directly to a doll count? Or must it be removable?

    17. When you say 'flight related vehicles' does that also include any fantasy things that are connected with flying like a magic carpet and such?

    18. Can you post an image or a link to what do prize looks like? Ive tried searching for that and have found nothing thanks:D

    19. They could, but we would recommend avoiding "it works by magic" sort of entries. How they work should be apparent by looking at them, even if it is just a winged creature in a saddle.

I will take pictures when I have the prize in hand.

It's fine if it's attached to the doll.

    20. Same. I've only been able to find an Asleep Eidolon Jiao Jr. Is there a typo in the first post?

    21. Yes, actually, there is! :blush Sorry about that. I am unfamiliar with the sculpt, so I didn't catch the typo even when I read it over. I'll make that correction.

Also, a few people have asked via PM - yes, it is the full doll, not just the head.

    22. I have the most awesome, simple, yet not in a million years likely to win idea for this :XD: If I don't think up something more sensible I may have to just enter it for the sake of entering and funs, I'm not good at making stuff :XD:

    23. oooh this one sounds fun I think I'm going to have a go!

    24. Ooooh, a challenge. I like a challenge ^___^

    25. Excited about this!

    26. How is something magical different from something out of science fiction (jet pack), or other legendary characters (angels and winged horses)??? All these items are not real, so why can't i have a witch's broom or a magic carpet or something else that flys by magic??

      Just curious. :)

    27. We're trying to have people think with a little more ingenuity than just 'here's this thing and magic makes it float.' We're looking for creativity, and magic can be a bit too much of a catch-all.

    28. We asked that people create items whose function are obvious. If you look at a jet pack, people can reason "Oh, it flies because it's jet propelled." If you create a winged horsed, people can tell that it flies because it has wings. A magic wand or broom isn't readily apparent aside from for cultural references, so the "flying" part would have to come from description.

The entries are being judged on what they are and how well they are made... they are not being judged on the entrant's writing and description ability.

    29. Hi! I haven't gotten any entries yet for this contest... so I wanted to remind everyone that my name is Truffle, not Truffles. (There is only one of me, which my owners would probably say is a good thing!) Please be sure you are sending your entries to Truffle with no s. "Truffles" is also a user here, and if your submissions go to that account, they won't be entered.

If you've sent an entry already, please check your Sent items to make sure it went to Truffle.

    30. Hi Truffle - I've sent you my entry today!

    31. im working on mine right now, truffle! i was wondering though, in the sock couture contest it was mentioned that we could add any extra details about our works such as how long it took or how many beads were sewn. i have some fun facts about my entry and was wondering if i should mention them when i send in the photos?

    32. I'd also like to know if we get to choose which of our photos will be put out for member voting- or will they all go out?

    33. Most likely we will put up all images, but only one will be an image (the rest will be links to images). We would put the full view up as the image.

    34. ...>:/ I had to see this contest only AFTER I started making a Transformers Seeker cosplay for my doll, didn't I??? I've already posted progress pictures. Darn.

    35. I've started mine and i'm so happy with how it's coming out!! It's too cool!! Won't tell what it is at this point though..:sneaky:blush

    36. I have an idea, but I'm not quite sure if it fits completely within the rules... Who should I ask to make sure it is?

    37. Can I enter this contest and another one?

    38. Mentalprsn: Please PM an active moderator if you have an idea and want to double check to make sure it's within the rules.

CherryChansGifts: Yes, you may enter as many contests as you like.

    39. My armature and how to attach to the doll is finally completed. Not 100% happy how things turned out but it's close enough to what I wanted for now.

Now I need to cover and decorate everything.

    40. If I've got the time I'm totally doing this one too, got the idea for the cutest little thing ever! XD

    41. I'm done!!!! Just sent in my photos!!:bcupcake:)

    42. Hehehe, nice ^^
I'm over half done my piece. It's been awhile coming together lol. A week of collecting stuff to use and a whole day putting it together thus far. Phew!
Can't wait to see what everyone came up with :)

    43. In the voting, will there be a distinction made between the particular type of found objects used and the way these objects are used?

For instance, would a lego propeller used as a propeller (or airplane wings used as wings) count differently than an object put to a new, creative use, like an eyedropper used as exhaust pipe? Or would it be best just to make everything from scratch?

Thanks for your help answering this! :aheartbea:aheartbea:aheartbea

    44. Is photoshopping the background going to be allowed?

    45. i am curious about the photoshopping too, Im also curious on how the voting will take place. Will all 3 submitted pictures be displayed along with the description? are we allowed to have a "collage" image displaying the small details?

    46. Also, is adding text labeling what you're looking at in photoshop (right side, left side, top, bottom) etc allowed?

    47. In the spirit of asking questions, regarding this item:

My entry is made with the help of other items, but there was alot of work that went into properly incorporating them into the final design. How important is it to try to show/explain this by use of the 3 photographs? A collage image as ArouraAnn suggested (that is still at maximum size) might help in showing these details, if necessary.

My main concern is when the item is fully completed you won't really be able to see or examine any of the armature. I don't want to finish it if I need to take photos of what it looks like before it all gets covered up.

I was planning to show the different poses possible with the item in the 3 photographs, so if one has to be designated to showing off the workings of the item I need to get that out of the way before I finish it.

      Thanks!:)

    48. Any answers to our questions? Someone of power? Anyone?

Also, I sent a PM to Armeleia with more questions like, 3 days ago and still haven't heard back. Who else could I ask if she's too busy?

    49. There are no specific 'point values' assigned to certain objects or their usage. In general, we're looking for creativity, execution, and craftsmanship. I'm sorry I can't give you a more definite answer than that.

We would prefer minimal photoshop, as a rule.

This will depend on how many entries we actually receive. We may have one picture displayed and the others linked; we aren't certain yet. As for the collage, yes, you may certainly show off the fiddly bits in a collage.

      Yes, that's fine.

The photos you choose to share are up to you. You may use a collage of images, as I indicated above. Really, it's the final product that will be of the most interest to any viewers; your explanation should be interesting and cover the parts that you think are nifty, but needn't be a thesis. :)

Bunnychan, I've sent you a PM to answer your question.

Just a note, everyone; August, as you may have guessed, is a busy month for the mods. ;) Not only are the anniversary festivities very time consuming, we also have RL stuff going on. Please be patient, and if you have a question that you feel hasn't been noticed in the thread, please PM an active moderator.

      Thanks, and good luck!

    50. Thanks for the replies Junkets. Sorry to have bothered you!

    51. In light of the confusion regarding the deadline for the sock couture contest, can we get clarification on the deadline for this contest?

Does " Entries must be received by August 15th" mean entries are due by 11:59 EDT on Friday, August 14th, or 11:59 EDT on Saturday, August 15th?

      Thanks!!!

    52. OMG I have to do this one. This reminds me of an assignment in my 3d Design class last semester. LOL! Infact it is the assignment except for what we have to make. He didn't give any restrictions to that. This will do a good hommage to my teacher and I'l show him what I made too.

      :D

    53. just wanted to drop in and say that after much sweat and frustration I'm finally finished~! Good luck everyone and I look forward to seeing the wonderful concepts that everyone comes up with! :D

    54. Bumping this question, hoping for an answer! :)

    55. I wasn't gonna join this, but now that Izzy is home...

      I have a question! D:

Would using parts of stuff (I use the term 'stuff' lightly, lol. I'm referring to parts of model planes, Gundams, Zoids, and other action figure bits.) be against the rules?

Wires and old electronics parts would also be used.

These parts would be assembled in a way that they probably won't look anything like they originally did.

I just want to verify it first if that would be okay (to use existing parts and combining them into a whole new structure).
Or do we need to physically make a new item and parts, like sculpting with apoxie and the like?

    56. You may use found objects to build your prop, or you may build/ sculpt from scratch. Your choice!

    57. Is there a particular reason that the question of the exact deadline isn't being answered? I'd really appreciate knowing if I have to take photos Friday night in the dark or if I have Saturday for better photos.

      Thank you!

    58. Maybe they didn't see it? I've just sent a PM asking as well. If I get a response, I will post it here.

      Thanks

ETA - I got a super speedy response (Thanks, armeleia!)

Re: Deadline for "Contest Flight (Prop/Accessory)"
      11:59pm 8/15.

    59. I was told in PMs to post it to this thread. O_o. Oh well, that's all I wanted to know. Thanks!

    60. Sorry, we're all kinda busy at the moment so we're not checking the threads as diligently. I guess we kind of figured that since the threads have been up over a month, any questions requiring an immediate answer would have been asked already.

Again, I just want to remind people that the mods running the contests are real people. This particular real person is trying to close on a house and is having a rough week.
