Entry #2

As I'm no Cunning Artificer I decided to keep my flying simple so I've put my faith in the wind - my entry is a kite-wing.

It is made from found, as in found in my home, materials.

The wing frames are mini-umbrealla spokes + wire, the wing fabric is material interfacing dyed black. The spokes have been sandwiched between two pieces of foamboard covered in more interfacing. A brass filigree finding was then pinned with brass nails to the foamboard and threaded with black ribbon for straps.

Entry #3:

This is my make for this contest. I made a pair of fairy-wings using a frame from an old butterfly, rainbowfoil, silver woll, my laminate-machine and the special foil for it. I finished the wings off with ribbon, two little pink rinestones and a little fabric flower. To keep the wings to the back of the doll I attached a little magnet to the back of the wings. The other magnet goes under the clothes to the back of the doll.

Entry #4:

She is riding a Fell beast I made based from the one in the Lord of the Rings. Its made completely out of newspaper (crumpled together for the body and flat sheets for the wings) that has been shaped by hand and wrapped with masking tape. The tape was then painted with regular acrylic paints. It is hung up by a string that is wrapped around its belly and comes up through the wings.

The total size of the beast is 57 inches long from wing tip to wing tip so its not a small thing by any standards (she is a SD sized doll after all), however a smaller doll (MSD or even puki) would work as well. (I only own SDs)

just a little bit about my prop

they are completely made from scratch, and i have made them so they look like gossamer wings they would be light but powerful enough to lift a fairy so she could fly with ease. They are large because she needs to fly high away from human eyes....

materials i used are

Various gagues of wire used as a "frame"
organza fabric as the main part of the wing top and bottom
Angelina fuseable fibre which is heated and bonds into an irredescent form for the tips of the wings
Glitter (silver and white) to accent the wings on the wire work and the tips.
Tiny pearlised flowers, crystal diamonte, pearlised bugle beads.

Entry #7:

This is Hannah's Hot air balloon.
Once the balloon is filled with hot air and lifts off the ground the wings help steer and fly.
There are 7 sandbags around the edges to release to drop weight and create more lift.
There is also a telescope onboard so Hannah can see all her friends on the ground.

Styrofoam ball, fabric, glue, wire, wooden rods, gold spray paint, clay, yarn, hot glue, 1 marble, 1 basket.

It took about 12 hours to make it, over about 3 weeks.

Just sending in my entry for the flight prop contest. The prop I made for the contest is a YoSd sized Ultralight Trike type aircraft. It is sort of like a propeller powered, three wheeled glider and is steered by shifting of weight.

I used Plastic coat hangers for the frame of the trike. I cut them into pieces and epoxy and hotglued them together to get the shape I needed. The wheels were from an old toy box, I also used epoxy and hotglue to attach them to the plastic frame (they actually still turn). I used part of a seat from a toy cart that my daughter had, I sawed it in half using a large kitchen knife lol. I then screwed on a tiny fan from part of an old computer. After that I apolstered the seat with fiber fill and black fabric and painted the rest with black liquitex paint. I then hotglued the seat to the plastic frame. The wing was made by taking a wire coat hanger, bending it into the shape I wanted it in then sanding off some of the white coating and soldering pieces of another broken wire coat hanger together. I then took the rest of the black fabric that was left over from the seat and I hotglued that over part of the frame of the wing. Before glueing the wing to the trike frame, I taped over the wheels and the seat and then spray painted the whole frame orange. Hotglued the seat and the wing and then I was finished.

I built an MSD version of one of Da Vinci's flying machines. The doll pictured is my Luts Ttory Tarquin. I built this myself out of wood, fabric, basket reed, fabric, and string. If this machine were to work it would flap it's wings like a bird. I put in 3 different photos to show from the side, front, and 3 quarter view.

Model: Felixdoll Brownie Momo

Prop description and makeup: wire core, Ivory Sculpey with tan sculpy accents, game bird feathers. Attach via an embroidery thread harness under clothing. Feathers were hand sorted and matched to left and right alignment, sculpy placed over wire, feathers molded in, and heart added last.

They act as real wings that she can flap and fly, empowered by compassion and will, hence the heart at the base.

How it works:
It's rather complicated in how exactly it works, says Dei, but the general idea is that water is added through the top. The water settles into the chamber within the machine where it is heated and produces steam which pressurizes and acts as the main power for the machine. The energy burst from this is released through the exhaust pipe at the bottom, providing the initial liftoff for the pilot. A large top propeller is what keeps the pilot in the sky and a series of gears controls this propeller to ascend or descend. Side to side movement is controlled by the side propeller. The smaller propeller is controlled by yanking on the leather shoulder straps, causing the fan to push forward or reverse. The large propeller is started by a yank on the back chain, which should be done by the flight attendant, but can be done by a skilled pilot. The same chain is used to control the top propeller. Temperature and pressure gauges can be found on the back of the machine, and are mostly used by the flight attendant, who of course is only of assistance before take off.
Only skilled pilots should attempt to fly the steampunk flying machine.

Materials and Building Process:
The base of my machine is made out of floral foam which was coated with sealant and then painted to look more rustic in appearance. The propeller is made from wonderflex (a heat activated plastic) which I heated to make the material hard and then coated with sealant and painted much like the machine base. I attached the propeller wings to a large washer which I then threaded onto a bolt and secured it with a nut. It was super glued to another bolt to give it enough height to clear the dolls head and then inserted and glued into the machine. All of the gear parts and most metal pieces are from old clocks I've ripped apart. The propeller is plastic which I took from a broken toy and painted and set it into the machine and glued to secure. The rounded pipes are made from bendy straws that I sealed with electrical tape and painted, the straight pipes are painted straight straws inserted into the foam. The large 'exhaust pipe' on the bottom is made out of some sort of bathroom plumbing item, I don't recall what it was though. I used copper wire to house the temperature gauge on the back (made from a watch face).

These wings were designed starting with hand cut light gauge brass sheet metal as the base. Cold soldered on both sides are various metal found objects and several copper pieces hand cut and stamped by me. The feathers are held in place by brass tubes cut and soldered by me. Handmade leather harness buckles to secure the wings to the pilot.

Powered by steam, the intricate metal pieces animate the wings. A skilled pilot can fly for miles.

What its really made of:
Efelant- is hand sewn with blue linen fabric
Basket/wing frames- Bamboo skewers that have been cut to various lengths with a dremel
Wing fabrics- more linen
Ladder steps- popsicle sticks chopped down with a dremel
Both sizes of rope- hemp cord
Satchels- socks!
Headlights: hobby lights wired internally with a 9 volt and battery casing from the hardware store.
Horn: Sculpey clay and paint. The handle is made with jewelry wire and a bead.

Fun fact: Both the headlights, and the 'steering wheel' really work! By pushing/pulling on the handlebar, a clear cord threaded underneath the basket and up to the wings allows them to actually flap.

Entry #14:

Description: Water is placed in the container in the center of the piece. This water is converted to steam, which moves the “feathers” in an up and down motion. The higher the pressure produced by the steam, the faster the “feathers” flap. This allows for a variety of flight speeds.

The gauges inside the container monitor the pressure and water levels in the device. Should the pressure become too great, the excess steam is released through the exhaust pipe, a small hole located near the water intake pipe on the top of the center device.

The device is attached to the wearer by tying the four black straps together in the front.

Entry #16:

I choose to make the Flying Carpet from Disney's Aladdin. Carpet has a personality of his own as if he is a living being, flying where he wants using the wind to help him fly to his destination.

I made my flying carpet out of two different types of purple material, then painting the carpet design with acrylic paint. I even included a wire frame inside the carpet to bend the carpet to give it more posablity. The tassels were made of yellow rope that i had unwoven at the ends.

I made 3 part ball jointed wings for my AIL Daryl on a Bella Bambi body.

This first picture shows Daryl in flight (really, really it does!!! )
and this is the main picture I would like to submit - so if you only show one picture, could it please be this one? the wings are paperclay over a wire, aluminum tape and styrene pipe armature - with polymer balls and sockets. They are strung on elastic, just like the rest of the doll.

There are 3 sections to each wing (you can see the 3 sections layered on her left shoulder in the first picture) so they can open up fully extended as shown in the 2nd picture, or can fold down as shown in the 3rd picture and Daryl would be able to flap her wings to fly.

After a frantic lap around the house in search of supplies I sat at the computer staring at the screen and debtaing how much trouble I would get in for yanking an "unimportant" part of the car for a prop base. ALOT. *sip* maybe the lawnmower? Nah. *sip* maybbee.... no, I got nothin . *finished coke* ...WAIT! I have an infinate supply of base material AND I can be environmentally friendly! 7 absolutely shredded coke cans later, a few feet of tinfoil, some paint, wire, beads... and I somehow had a flight prop! The base is painstakingly shaped cans covered in plated tinfoil to represent a kind of robot feel, with wire to attach it in place and make a kind of "feathers". My idea is that he was a broken down sort of "Mecha-Angel" (get it?) and though he can still fly he breaks a little more each time he does. The panels covering his wings have long since gotten lost, exposing his always turning gears. His wings are covered in cobwebs and filth from disuse as he wanders. They are mostly immobile, though they fold and rotate like airplane wings in flight. His "feathers" are the secret to his lift and propulsion as they spin on a small axis around eachother with a soft "whirring". It is uncertain if his wings will ever work again, even when the time comes for him to take off.

I bought one of those floral butterflies, and removed it's wings. I sewed the wings onto a piece of fabric, and also sewed on seed beads for the 'fairy dust'. The beads also form two dangly tails. The wings are fully poseable and attach with a magnet.

Here is my airship which is made to fit Pippos sized dolls. It weights a bit over 25 pounds and was made entirely from scratch except the wheel and the prop- which can both spin. The balloon is made of muslin stretched over a wooden frame and inside the balloon are lights that can light the way at night. The ship itself is made of plywood decorated with small tiles and wooden filigree. The cabin, which is removable to reveal the lower deck, has a leather floor, and bejeweled wallpaper as well as two hanging chandeliers of beads on each side.
The lower deck has a small spy glass installed in one of the portholes and is a perfect place to store all the things you need on a long airship trip.

It works by taking the thread and wrapping it around the neck of the wings, then connecting it to the doll by the straps you see. I did not used any pre-made items, (unless you count the leaves). I t took about 30 mins- to an hour to pull it all of.

Flying machine- steam-powered wings

Concept-

The tail boom (long aluminum tube) houses a gas-powered heater. This heats water inside the large copper tank, generating steam pressure, which drives the wings forward and backwards (flapping)

The steam enters the valve at the top of the tank. When the wings are in the rearward position, steam pressure is channeled to the right side of the valve, which distributes it to the closed ends of the two lower cylinders.
Steam pressure then pushes the pistons outward in the lower cylinders, bringing the wings forward.

As the wings move forward, the arm at the top of the left wing slides the valve to the left. As the valve reaches the end of its travel, steam pressure is diverted to the outside ends of the two cylinders.

This retracts the pistons, pulling the wings backwards to complete the cycle.

A Vee-style tail with ruddervators control movement, and also helps support the apparatus when the wearer is grounded.

The complete steam wing assembly weighs 1 pound 2 ounces, is 22" long, and has a 25" wingspan.

The wings fold down manually for easier transport

Construction-

The following hardware was found/purchased-
All screws
Threaded rods/nuts
Rivets used on leather harness
Steel-toned rectangles (used to make buckles)
Hinges on ruddervators (dollhouse door hinges)
Spring waist belt (strap from a vintage Oster hand massager)

All other items were fabricated from scratch.
The water tank was made from copper tubing and sheet
Wing trellises are made up from metal strips used to hold up file folders, heated with a torch to oxidize them, and assembled with rivets hand-made from 14ga electrical wire.
The "chain" securing the tank was braided from 19ga hobby wire.
All pivots are cut from brass tubing.
Leather harness was cut from scrap.
The lower support that mounts the tail boom and steam pistons was made from six separate pieces of brass cut from an old clock.
Epoxy was used to bond the aluminum wing base to the brass tube used as a hinge; everything else was screwed, riveted, press-fit, or soldered. No glue or tape is used in the construction.

Wood Sprite Glider-

These gliders are used by the Wood Sprite community to travel long distances through the trees with greater ease than is possible on the ground. They are also occasionally used for defense. The Sprites shoot small, stinging darts at intruders, who usually decide the forest is full of mosquitoes and go elsewhere.

The best flyers are smaller and lighter-boned than usual, and often have golden eyes like a bird of prey. It is said that they not only can catch the faintest breeze, they can even call up the wind when they need it. This young warrior is such a one.

Description:

These are version 1.0 posable wings, attached to the doll with ball joints, the sockets for which have been drilled into his back. The joints rotate to allow the wings to move up and down, and from parallel to the doll's arms to straight backwards, and the wire armature of the wing allows them to fold and extend freely with a similar joint and bone structure to a bird's wing. Everything you see here (including painting of the doll and drilling the extra joint sockets) was done by me.

My flight apparatus is a winged harness named "The Transporticus Angelicus". The wearer rests the apparatus on their shoulders, (making sure to adjust the shoulder harnesses to fit them, and to fasten the safety-chain), and the wings take care of the rest! Users should be aware that during the first flight, they may be subject to such symptoms as dizziness, head-rush, and an inexplicable need to show off.

The harness base (including the metal wing base) is constructed from various copper and brass jewelry findings: stampings, wraps, jump rings, and chain. These materials have been cut to size, soldered together, and tarnished with a blow torch. The feathers were cut from a semi-transparent plastic and carefully inserted into the wing base.

My concept for the Flight Prop contest is of a paper airplane with some... modifications. I took the idea of a mad scientist/daredevil type doll coming across a paper airplane and really having his way with it, giving it everything from a huge tricked out engine, to plush leather seats :3 Of course no diabolical device is complete without a big red button to push when you're ready to test it out!

The actual plane and just about everything on it is made from paper clay. I would like to take a moment to say that everything except for Chichi (the doll), his shoes, and his jacket, were made by me. I made the white outfit he is wearing and goggles, as well as every single piece seen on the plane.

The construction of the plane took me about a week and a half of solid work, partially due to waiting for things to dry. I had never worked with paper clay before, but knew it would be light enough to sit on the end of the airplane without tipping over. The Engine on top, two jet engines underneath the wings, control box, and exhaust pipes are all made from painted paper clay which was molded by hand. I made each piece of each device individually, then painted them, then used hot glue to put them together, then painted again to create the welded look. The pieces are accented with silver notions for rivets and assorted wiring, some of which was also painted by me. I attached fo-leather straps to make it look like it was strapped on.

The seat is made from vinyl and a sort of tweed fabric, and yes, I made it from scratch.

I tried to capture as many details as possible in the photos, but I would like to point out a couple details that you might miss. In the second picture you may or may not notice a coppery thing sticking out under the planes wing, which is the exhaust pipe. Also in the second picture you can see a closer up picture of the jet engine under the wing. I made two of these, so there is one on either side. Both were built with the appearance of having fan blades inside, but they unfortunately were only visible from the back and I didn't find that pictures from that angle could successfully show enough of the plane to justify adding them. There are a lot of little details added very lovingly, my only hope is that while clicking through you might take a moment to stop and look just a little bit closer

This is a glider, very loosely inspired by the one Nausicaa rides. It does not have the ability to fly on it's own, but it will ride a strong wind current. It can be ridden either laying down or you can stand up with your feet planted on the front bar, and hold on to the attached straps.

It was completely handmade with sculpey, brass, and vellum.

Some fly at the speed of sound. She flies on the power of sound.

The wings are functional; made from the speakers from musical greeting cards (headphones alone weren't loud enough), headphone wire and have their own amplifier (which a friend aided me in soldering together). From the amplifier it can then be plugged into anything with a headphone jack. The 'feathers' are individually cut craft foam that have been hand painted and then held together with paper fasteners to allow positioning. These were then glued to the backs of the craft stick that is also glued to the back of the speakers. It is held to her by magnets.

The 'released' form of this character's powers involve wings of ice, so I decided to create ice wings for the contest. The wings are made on a framework of aluminum florist wire, and are constructed of an acrylic gel that cures transparent and holds its shape to resemble ice. The gel membrane is flexible so the wings are fully poseable and can be shifted gently into different configurations (the gel also has the added benefit of being lightweight enough that -- with a bit of work -- the doll can stand unaided while wearing the wings). They are attached to the doll with magnets. Doll model is a DoC Homme Kirill.

The Airship Fisseldown.
How it works: It's a tiny steampunk airship with a helium lift envelope balloon and engine propulsion. The engines are supposed to run on soda pop, which is kept in a glass bottle on deck. It is driven by standing at the wheel and working the controls. Here you can see it piloted by a Puki.
Materials:
I built the ship itself of wood,
Various turned wood parts are involved,
the balloon is a lantern,
the rigging is hemp cord and jewelry findings,
the props on board were altered to suit,
and the ship is decorated with sculpey and clock parts, as well as a brass anchor and chain.

Details--

Here we have the Flying Rust-Bucket, also known as Sky Tetanus. It's a full-sized personal airship for SD sized dolls, currently modeled with a Souldoll Tanning Hye. It was built to have a "junkyard" appeal, as though it was cobbled together with scrap metal and torn curtains. If it were "real," it would fly as a dirigible. It is displayed on the ground, as though it were being exhibited at a World's Fair.

It is built entirely from scratch. It has a frame built from dowel rods, then covered with duct tape, plaster trips, paper mache, and of course paint. The balloons are also paper mache, and they're held on with a decorative net and twine. Copious amounts of Crayola Model Magic were involved as well.

Process:Tooling leather hide cut, shaped and dyed before being glued onto a wire and felt frame, decorated with jewelry findings. [While I did not make the individual beads, I combined and assembled them.]

Mechanism of flight: As any bat would fly.

Wings are modeled on a Soom Heliot girl.

Thank you all, and as far as commissions I just don't
know if I could handle it right now lol I had to do
most of the elbow work with tools not meant for this kind
of thing- if I ever get better tools though I'll think about
maybe possibly opening a commission lol!
