Wearables First wig, picture heavy

Sep 24, 2018

    1. Hello all!
I have finally made my first wig, it definitely was an adventure. I'll run you through my steps and I'd appreciate any advice and/or tips you can give me!

Alright so I started by plastic wrap and nylon tights on the dolls head. My glue is Elmer's all purpose glue. I put two layers of glue onto the nylon to make the headcap.

I was using a synthetic fiber wig of my own that didn't fit me, I didn't have any wefts and was gluing the loose hairs to the wigcap.

I noticed the glue was pretty wet so I used a small hairband to keep it in place

Then I covered the rest of the wigcap with hair and created some wefts for the part and left it all to sit till the next morning

After a bit of frustration and figuring out that the hair I'm using is super bulky when folded over I ended up trying to fix the bulk by fashioning a hair up style.

So it looks definitely worse than I'd hoped but it is my first try. Maybe next time I should start by making the wefts itself and using them instead of loose hairs, and find another way to do the part.

      Anyways, thanks for watching!

    2. I've tried gluing loose fibre and hated it, wefts were sooo much easier...

    3. since you are starting from a wig it has wefts already just cut them out of the wig by turning it in side out so you can see them

    4. Making wigs is pretty difficult, but you accepted the challenge - good for you! I think you did well for a first try, and the hair color you chose is very pretty, too (but you may be right that the fibers are a bit thick for the size of your doll).

Personally, I really love to glue fibers directly to the wig cap instead of making wefts. I use wefts for the part, but otherwise, especially for small heads, wigs tend to be much less bulky if you don't use wefts.

There are some really talented and experienced people posting there! I learned a lot from reading through it.

    5. This was really informative, thank you for posting this. I haven't found my first doll yet, but have been trying to do as much research as possible beforehand. As a crafty sort of person, I had considered making my own wigs, but I had never considered that the fibers could be too thick or thin for whatever I was trying to make.

    6. I feel like yarn wigs are also a great start to anyone who hasn't made awig before yet. Yarn tends to hide a lot of mistakes and just helps you get a feel of how to put everything together, and is typically cheaper than actual fibers. :) It was a great first attempt!

    7. Thank you! Yes! The reason I didn't make wefts when I started this wig was the bulk factor. I was impressed with myself during my wig making but when it was finished the part was so bulky:sweat
I figure if I had found a better way to make the part the wig would have looked so much better!
I'll definitely give that thread a read through! Thank you again!

I think I'll use yarn in my next attempt, maybe I'll go for a nice blue or a pink. It's really hard to find a nice affordable selection of yarn where I'm at. So most likely carrot orange is not in the question.
People have no use for knitted sweaters or blankets in my area of Hawaii :pout:
But it would definitely make sense to use yarn to keep the bulk down on a small head. Thanks for the tips!:XD:

    8. If you are looking for yarn, you could try online. I know a store I like to go to, does online shipping as well.

Sorry for getting into a conversation that doesn't involve me >_<

    9. Oh how I miss having a local JoAnn but yes I will definitely look into that, thank you so much!

    10. Of course! I always like to add options if I can.

    11. Wig making is so much fun! Yours turned out pretty good! I cut my first one up, actually XD

I'm also a fan of gluing loose fibers, but I've had terrible luck with Elmer's white glue. It dries too slowly for me >< I like the Aileen's Fabric Fusion pretty well. I'm not sure what stores are around you, but it's a pretty common brand in the US and you can even find it at walmart :D

    12. Thank you! I'll definitely look into a new glue for the wig

    13. If you're going to glue the fiber straight to the wig cap, then you'd get much better results by not gluing the fiber on so haphazardly. Glue just the ends of the fibers (the last cm or less) to the cap, rather than putting the glue an inch or so in and leaving the ends sticking up. Search "bjd wig tutorial" on YouTube for some great walk-throughs :)
