Aesthetics First Weekend doing Face-ups

Nov 2, 2016

    1. I titled it this because I feel like I did a faceup and wiped it a thousand times this weekend xD But this is where I'm at now. This is my Little Rebel Aleksander which I bought second hand here on the marketplace. He had a customized company faceup and it was beautiful but not really as feral as I needed for my character, Wiryll Cendis, who is a little feral fae boy.
Anyway, right now, I know I need to figure out bottom eyelashes better. I'm thinking of getting him actual top eyelashes because something about the around the eyes seems too light to me... BUT I do like high contrast portraits so that could be why.
I use a lot of color, he had a real red and green palette going on to be cohesive with his wig and character and clothing etc.
My main issues *I THINK* are that I don't have a small enough brush to really line the eyes. I worked with watercolor pencils and tried layering if it got too dark, but ultimately I need to just get a really thin brush so I can moisten strokes and make them look less like pencils and more like watercolor pencils.
Anything you see that can help me out, please let me know. I have an art degree and I was like, oh yes this is going to be so fun and not hard at all! And as you all know, IT IS SO HARD! xD

      Here's Wiryll:

    2. I see what you meant about the eyeliner being light and I think that it is because the eyeliner doesn't look like it goes across the whole eyelid, even though you did line the whole upper lid, it's just that going towards the nose the black is just in the inner part of the eyelid or just the edge which isn't visible from the front, but still visible when head is upside down.
Try using black pastel for under the eye instead of pencil, or use the pastel to help blend in the pencil.

I also suggest using a different colour for the lip lines because they are the same as the eyebrows and to try spacing them a bit more evenly and same direction.
The lower lashes may look more natural if the hairs were the same colour as the eyebrows.
Also it may help using reference photos for using eyelashes, because I've seen company face ups which the eyebrows were really simple and straight and they still look good, and some are shaped like Vs or triangles.

The eyebrow shape is very nice and thick, though the eyebrows are too close together, generally eyebrows are the same distance apart as the eyes. If you imagine a line going up from the tip of the eye that's where the eyebrow starts.

Generally the face up is pretty good and the freckles look nice too.
I felt the same way about doing face-ups but it just takes lots of practice, and to me it was fun as well.

    3. I'm comfortable with the spacing of the eyebrow :) He's not a very manicured boy, and as I've learned in portrait sculpting and painting classes over the years, this is not the same for everyone. Also, the closer the eyebrows, the thinner the nose looks, which I like on him xD
I find that since the dolls eyes generally are pretty large in proportion to their face, if you shift the eyebrows closer together, it makes the face a bit more masculine (and on the androgynous LR Aleksander face, that was important to me), there is an eye-size between the eyes (generally on most faces as a biological rule) and because the eyes are larger, it makes a very feminine spacing to the eyes (more feminine faces have wider set eyes also as a biological rule, something they teach us in class xD ) so the eyebrows were totally intentional with spacing but thanks for the feedback!

I totally see the lip line thing. I actually used a green for the shadowed bits and then a lighter green pencil and it just didnt end up the way I wanted. You're totally right.
And with the eyeliner. I didn't really want him to have eyeliner and thought I could pretend it was an eyelash but again, totally didnt work out. Thats why I only lined where the lashes would go instead of all the way to the corner like makeup. I dunno, I purchased some brown eyelashes for him so hopefully that will make it better :D I definitely have to try those bottom lashes again because you're right, I didn't use a reference and it's just so messy :(
Thanks for the tip about the pastel. I will definitely try that!
Thank you so much for taking the time to help me out! It will definitely help me for my next faceup :D

    4. That's a very nice faceup! And impressive that it's your first? Wow!

I love the blushing, it's well done and you chose good colors. The freckles are adorable. ;3; I like the eyebrows a lot too: the shape is great, the position is good, the hairs are going in a good direction. I think they could only be improved if you drew thinner lines with a sharper pencil tip, like on the tiny little eyelashes you made.

Eyelashes are tricky, because you have to figure out what style you like and then you have to get good at it. xD And people don't always agree about eyelashes. Generally there's two ways to go about it, doing something that looks more realistic, or doing stylized eyelashes. I like stylized lashes, but it looks like you were going for natural, maybe? I agree with Psywave that looking at references of eyelashes will help them to look better. Your technique is good though, they're nice and thin.

The lips need the most work IMO, but not that much because like I said this is a good faceup! XD The lip lines are definitely off... I don't like the color of the lines, and I think they're too thick. As it is, the lips look kind of chapped. I recommend using a color that's a slightly darker version of the lip color, or using white very lightly just to give the lips texture. You don't want the lip lines to have too much contrast against the base color, because then they look too stripey and it's distracting.

You have a really good handle on this already, so I think you'll be super good at this in no time. <3 At this point I would say you should focus on practicing your linework, sharpening your pencils constantly so you get thin, crisp lines. Or, if you're experienced with paint, you could go that route. A lot of people who've never done art before struggle with it, but since you know what you're doing you could give it a try? Most people use acrylic paint mixed with a medium to thin the paint and make it dry slower, but some people use gouache or watercolor. If you get a reeeeally thin brush (I use a 20/0 liner), you can get really beautiful lines that taper at the ends and are smoother looking than pencils.

Anyways, he's gorgeous and I love your concept for him! :chibi

    5. Yessss You're so right. His lips look SO CHAPPED. Thank you so much for the color suggestion. I think the green was a very poor choice xD
But yes, totally, I need to sharpen my pencils for SURE. I just bought some new brushes (im going to have to look for that 20/0 liner xD) I didn't even think of retarder mediums, that sounds like it would work wonders. <3

      Thank you !!
