Wearables First try at a 'nature wig'

Feb 29, 2016

    1. Made from fake flowers and plants and hot glue. The inside is lined with the softer leaves so it doesn't scratch the head, but I have no way of actually securing it to the head yet.
Any suggestions on how to improve, or advice on how to make them look more natural would be appreciated^^

    2. I'm not entirely sure if this is plausible but I feel it would be better of the vines/stems were made of fabric or something softer in general because I think the texture of the plastic is whats making it look less natural. I think it's very good overall though : o

    3. Thank you!
Yes, I think I will look for the fabric over wire type next time, those would probably fall flatter and be easier to style.

    4. I agree with AutumnWyvern, fabric would be best(if they don't sell it at craft stores, maybe try making it yourself with ribbons, wires and such?). I absolutely love this idea though!

    5. I absolutely love this idea! I'm getting a Doll Chateau Larry snail soon and I think something like this would look adorable on him! I agree that fabric would work better, but I still really like the one you made. It's such a cool concept, very creative.

    6. I really love this wig!! Maybe a bit more cover in the front?

    7. Really great idea! Not bad for a first try. I agree with @Marha that it could use some more coverage in the front. However I like the plastic texture but I wouldn't mind seeing the fabric version. Good Luck with this! Again a really great idea!

    8. Would it still be "natural" with feathers? If so, adding feathers might help fill in the gaps. I've seen some cool wigs made out of feathers - but your wig is really cool on its own, though.

    9. Thanks for the suggestions everyone!
@hanaful , I love feather wigs! Id like to try that sometime.
@Marha & @WolfChild , I added a couple more leaves in the front and filled out the back with more ferns, so its a little more full :)

    10. I love it. I agree that more coverage in the front is an improvement. Love what you have done!

    12. .... YES!

    13. It is interesting idea :)
There are a couple of things that may be improved however. The flower arrangement is all over the place and the contrast between the elements of the composition should be greater.
Not bad, but you should continue experimenting.

    14. Thanks for the feedback @rhin , can I ask what you mean by contrast? Like color?

    15. Love the wig! It looks great with the recent update! What made you decide on a nature wig?

    16. Thank you!

The theme of the costume contest at out local con this year is 'Fairy Court', so my roommate and I have been trying to come up with unique ideas :)

    17. @Cydril, yes, the colors. It may be my display but the purple/blue elements seem a little lost in the green background. If they were brighter and in higher contrast with the green (especially in the last face shot) the result should be better. Using deep red or adding a lot of smaller elements for example may bring it to life.

    18. Oh! It became a lot better! I like the nature idea.
I agree with rhin, though. Flower arangement does not look that good. Flowers look as if they have withered. I think, it would look better if they faced upward like in flower crown.
      The plastic details look good.
      Good luck!

    19. Absolutely gorgeous....and I admit I am going to go home to night, get out all my miniature paper and silk leaves and flowers and try to do something similar. What an amazing idea. I would not, I promise, make them to sell.. just one for my newest dollie. I may make a cloth hard cap ( nylons and glue) to glue it all to. Brilliant idea!

    20. From the second post, I'd suggest adding a little more to the sides of the front and then turning that squared-off negative space near the "part" into an acute angle.

    21. This is a great idea! You can make little forest sprites now! so cute! as for your head issue.. have you tried sewing a simple headcap out of a thicker stretch knit and then gluing your pieces to it? I also think the suggestion to use fabric is a good idea, but I know that those are not easy come by..I would suggest maybe trying to hunt down something a bit softer in a proper fabric/art shop..I know Micheals carries some great stuff around holidays and they have 'soft plastic' which isn't as shiney and is more bendable which might be nice =) Either way this is a great idea and you did an awesome job for your first go of it!

    22. The plastic makes it seem a little unnatural, unless you're going for the 'waxy' type flowers/plants. I'd suggest looking at the way certain plants layer as well in a natural setting--or a landscaped setting. You don't want any one type of plant to overshadow the others, but rather enhance them. I'd agree with fabric flowers/leaves, but you'd need to layer them accordingly and maybe paint them or otherwise to get that natural effect.

    23. What a great idea for a wig! Very cool!

    24. I think what I love most about the color is the reddish purple brown tips... It looks almost like an ombre and it really compliments the greens. I think going more red purple than blue purple would make both colors really pop and add a bit more depth. (I know you were asking about color and contrast.)
I also really love the coverage you added in the front, and the shine doesn't bother me at all. I actually really like how it makes the light bounce around :)

    25. The idea of nature wig is very good but is also very hard
In my opinion the most important are the supplies you will be using
First you have to choose this with the most natural look, I will recommend some moss, silk artificial flowers and leafs ( they are the most expensive but they look so good ) You also can use some forest fruits or eventualy even some paper leafs like ferns https://img0.etsystatic.com/030/1/7093483/il_570xN.581049970_b61m.jpg
You alse can shade the leafs that you already have to add more natural look.

It so hard to explain :D

Anyway I think that this will look more natural if all the plants will be growing from head , just imagine that all this artificlas plants are hair. They have to grow from something and somewhere, and sticking tham flat like you did , make it flat xD
If there are leafs than thing about brunches, stalks, roots and vines.

    26. I absolutely agree with you, it is really hard to do the natural one without good supplies.

    27. You've done a wonderful job. I like your wig, it looks really marvelous!
