Aesthetics First time painting/blushing (Soom Ai body)

Jul 1, 2017

    1. This is my first time painting and blushing a doll. :3 I had all kinds of trouble with this project, more on that below.

This is what I started with. A blank Soom Ai body, bought used. She has no head, I'm currently searching for one.

I sprayed her body with sealant and painted her legs with acrylic paint.

I used Mungyo soft pastels to blush the legs and hands.

When I was done, I went outside to spray her with sealant.
      Well.
The nozzle came off of the spray can. I tried to put it back. It didn't go back. Instead the spray can started spraying it's contents without stopping. I tried to jam the nozzle back but instead the sealant came out as liquid all over my hand. After a while I stopped trying and took the can a bit further and just let it do it's thing. It was a brand new can and it sprayed itself empty.
      Yay.
I went and bought a new one today (half the price!) and finished sealing the doll.

Now that the body was ready, I was excited to start stringing her (first time stringing a doll!). Then I noticed that the seller didn't include S-hooks in the deal. I didn't notice that before, not the seller's fault of course. The upper body was already strung, which is nice, but I currently have no S-hooks for the legs or the head.
Nevertheless, I restrung her legs as far as I could with ribbon.
While I was doing that, I noticed something else. See the string sticking out of one of the legs? It was stuck in the leg because there was a broken S-hook (I think?) stuck at the opening of the smaller hole inside the leg.

^^^ There was one of these in both legs. They weren't far in, but stuck.

^^^ See the smaller hole inside? That's where the metal part was stuck.

This was the case with both legs, the other one didn't have any string though. The metal part was properly stuck in the other leg. It took some proper pulling with a ribbon to get them out, but it wasn't impossible. I kind of hope the seller had mentioned this, but oh well. Can't be helped.

All in all, I quite like how the legs turned out. :) There were some inconveniences in the process, but I managed. I can't wait to restring her properly! I might add something to her body at some point, probably something mint colored. Her color code is mint chocolate. =w= I just need to get her a head first.

    2. Those hooves would look really good in black, maybe with dark green highlights, if you are going to use mint elsewhere. Or metallic gold shaded to bronze or brown. The shading on the furry parts of the legs looks really excellent. Good job!

    3. Thank you! ^_^ I have pondered whether I should paint the hooves black or dark brown or mint green, still haven't decided on anything. Maybe it'll be easier to decide once I get her a head and some clothes. I did consider maybe adding some mint green dots or something, but we'll see what her legs will look like in the end. : 3

    4. I really like the paint job you gave her legs! I've never done any customization work, so I can't help with method, but I have a couple suggestions as far as color goes. As much as I love the legs, I'm not sure that would be the right color for mint chocolate. It could just be the lighting, but it looks more like a milky caramel color than chocolate. If the fur color is supposed to be different than the chocolate, then you're golden though.

For the hooves, I would recommend a nice dark brown. I think the brown will bring out more of a chocolate feel, while dark green with the light fur color makes me think of moss. Use green for nail polish, or eyes and accessories. Maybe horns if you get some to go with the hooved look. You could always keep the body colors in the chocolate range, and use eyes and clothes and other things for the mint part.

One last idea I just wanna stick in your brain: Since this is a white skin doll and you already have that nice caramel color, what about salt water taffy for a theme? The way the white hooves poke out from the caramel-ish fur makes me think of the white center of caramel corn taffy cubes. That's just what popped into my head, so I thought I would share. :sweat

All in all, great job and a super cute theme choice! :3nodding:

    5. Thank you! ^_^ Yes, you're right, I'm going to keep the mint chocolate color scheme just with her clothing, the doll itself won't have those colors. :) Well, I say that now, but we'll see how she ends up. 8D And you made a good point that the color of the hooves doesn't really look like chocolate, so adding green would look rather mossy. Maybe if the color is really light, it might work. But yeah, the hooves aren't really meant to look like chocolate, I just like them light brown. :>

I've been looking for horns, she definitely needs them! I'm debating the color, I have thought about dark brown or mint, might go with brown or gray, depending on what I find. I've also been looking for green eyes. I found a pair that has both green and brown, I bet they would look pretty good on her.

Salt water taffy sounds super adorable! Maybe I'll use that color scheme some time if I want some variety for her. :)
