First Project: Pervinca

Jun 25, 2009

    1. this is my first attempt, i had already written something on DoA

      here a little summary:

since i've started without a plan, at first she was a little strange
      [IMG]

then her face gets a little better
      [IMG]

with a wig and some eyes (actually those eyes are just painted rocks, that's why their so odd looking)

      starting with the body
      [IMG]

      the head a while later
      [IMG]

and this is the last picture for now
      [IMG]

now i'm modifying the body cause i figured out it was a bit too small for her
      what do you think?

    2. It depends on if you are trying to go for a realistic look. A human's torso, including the head, is four heads tall. But if you are going for a stylized look, then you are fine.

    3. new pictures

      side
      [IMG]

now i think i will work on the waist, right now she look too much like an hourglass

    4. Ahh! Where's her right ear?

    5. i've not made that yet ^^''

    6. After so long I finally took her out and fixed her, I think she looks so much better now. I was very new back then and started her when I didn't have any bjd yet. Then I started feeling sick and had to stop because my hands weren't steady enough and I was always tired. Now I feel better, I got back into bjds and now i'm continuing this project.

I actualy removed her single ear, it wasn't placed well.

    7. she's looking quite nice, I like her facial proportions, and you've obviously improved lots ^^ what size do you plan her to be?
Also before you work on limbs it's good to make an outline of a blueprint of sorts, otherwise proportions and balance can get really difficult

    8. I'm not sure what size she'll be, I originally wanted her to be small because I needed a replacement for the Serendipity Noel I couldn't buy but I eventually did get one so it doesn't matter anymore...
She's quite slim, close to my minifee but her head is a bit large so I was thinking of making her body larger as well. I'll probably wait to see how she looks with arms though.

I don't really know, I made her without a real idea in mind just taking clay and trying to make something that looked like a doll with it ^^"
      What is a blueprint?

    9. Haha my first doll also kinda has a big head for his body, I think it's a matter of style. A blueprint is like a plan for the proportions and stuff? Like, usually just the doll standing front and profile.
Helps you work faster, too, because it's easier to change proportions until it looks good on the paper than having to do a leg or a hand over and over because the size looks off. Idk personally I like having them and it's the first thing I do before I start working but different people have different styles ^^

    10. The thing is I'm actually better at practical things than theory so even if I did it I'm not sure I could follow it. One thing I'll do for sure is using a filler, maybe a straw or something. I made her without and had to carve all the holes, that was the worst part...

I've actually just made her body a little bigger and the head doesn't look so huge anymore. I measured her and she was almost minifee size but with a much slimmer waist. I don't want an odd sized doll. Now she's probably big enough to wear MSD clothes. I'm thinking of keeping her short, 40cm or even something less.

Don't mind her eyes, I carved them cause they weren't deep enough same thing for the forehead. I'm still working on the headcap.
The boob on the right looks weird, I wonder why I only notice how wrong something is when I post pictures...

    11. to her defense, most pairs of breasts are uneven :'D
my first project is around 22cm tall and the second one is 10cm, I can't imagine carving holes for parts that big!
also personally I find headcaps to be TERRIBLY hard to make fit right. Like, I'd rather do 3 pairs of hands than a headcap. good luck with it!

    12. Looking at your work in a different way is a great way to spot asymmetry and other things that just feels ”off”. I use a small mirror to look at my work through every now and then for that purpose.
Looking at the piece you are working on upside down may also help.
That is why you can see things on a picture on a screen that you can’t see when you are holding the piece in your hands. To get even more use out of it, try flipping the picture so that it is mirrored. Sometimes things that were unnoticeable before becomes apparent that way.

Knowing that others see your work can also help you to get some distance between yourself and the project and help you look at it objectively.

    13. I do look at it upside down, often I also go outside to see it in natural light. I can see most problems that way but there's always something else. Thanks for the suggestion of the mirror, I'll try it :)
