Photography First Photoshoot of my First/only/new doll!

May 12, 2012

    1. So this is my new doll, Shou Degawa. He is based on my existing original character who I created about 5 years ago. He is a Japanese detective from Osaka who is now working in the States. He was born with blue eyes and dyes his hair blonde. He's also gay and a bit heterophobic lol, but he's also in the closet, it's not hard for him to hide since he's incredibly masculine. Lastly, he's a pure blood werewolf/lycan! Needless to say I love him dearly and when I received this doll today and put his clothes and wig on him, I instantly felt a bond which really relieved me because it would be terrible to feel nothing for him after all this time and money.

      Anywho, here is my first photoshoot with him. I kinda hurried, but I took LOTS of pictures and I think I got some good shots. I'm by no means a professional. In fact, I use a Canon Powershot ELPH300hs digital camera and it's my very first camera. I bought it special for a vacation I'm taking this summer. It has some really nice features on it and for some of these darker foggy pics I used a feature on it called "toy camera". I think it gave the pics a nice eerie look. Please tell me what you think and if there is anything I can do better. Any advice for good poses? Anywho, without further adieu...

    2. Lovely photos for a first try, XYumekoX! It's considerably better than my first attempts. I just have a couple of tips for you. It's generally a no-no to cut people (or dolly people) off at the joints. This guide shows good places to crop to avoid any awkward photos. Another thing I noticed is that some of the photos seem to be taken from a lower angle. The lower angle adds interest, but it's a little too low in the 3rd photo, and we end up looking straight up into his nose. You can try angling his head down a little so that he's looking at the camera, moving up a little bit so that you're eye level, or moving to another angle, like you did in the 4th photo. I love the 5th photo. Just make sure you don't crop off any fingers. ^^

      Great job. And tell Mr. Degawa to keep his hair out of his pretty eyes.
      ~~~
      Our dolls have the same first name, btw! XD
    3. ^ thank you, I appreciate that link. And I like the fifth pic a lot too. Even though it cropped his fingers and knees a bit, I really like the fourth pic as well. But next time I will definitely reference that guide. ^_^
      btw... Mr. Degawa says that one eye covered is okay, it ads to his mysterious allure which is a guy magnent :3
    4. Anymore critiques? I really want to improve and I'm a novice to photography especially when it comes to dolls.
    5. Very nice. Interesting angles and great lighting. I especially love the ones with the tree
    6. I might try to take more pics by that tree. It really made for a nice background. Also, I liked that the tree doesn't make him look doll size. The tree gives no indication of his size or the tree's size from that angle. I need to find more backgrounds like this.
    7. You have taken lovely photos :) The only one that I have any kind of ideas about, is the third one. Its an interesting photo to be sure, but usually in photos with people (or dolls) my eye is drawn to the face first. Well, in #3, my eye goes directly to the crotch of his pants. I don't really know why, but the way he's sitting or something is drawing my eye there, and somehow I doubt you were trying to emphasize his theoretical manbits.
    8. HAHA no I was not, although my OC which he is based on would probably enjoy that kind of attention lol. I was mostly just experimenting with interesting angles. His character is a werewolf though so that's what inspired the setting and pose, like, as if he feels the urge to 'change'.
    9. Great photos! To me he looks like he his on a trail, and thinking deeply about what he is discovering.
    10. I really like the "eerie" feel you gave the photos, but I feel like you took it a little too far. The photos are a tad to blurry and washed out, which urges me to scroll on by and does not catch my eye. Try and lessen the effect in order to make the photos more prominent.
    11. I used a setting on the camera to get that effect so I don't think I could alter it, but I could go into photoshop and sharpen the image and maybe brighten up the doll itself to add more contrast to the photo.
    12. Your backgrounds look in scale with the doll. Good job.
