Hellooo~ My baby boy Tendouri is Japanese, so I wanted him to have a beautiful kimono to reflect his heritage So, I'm sure as a lot of you know, the Kimono's on Volks etc. can run for $250+ and I definatly don't have the funds to be spending that much on a Kimono,... when I need to buy doll bodies. SO. I figured I'd try my hand at it :') I've made one before, for a cosplay, but it's not really very "traditional". (For those who are curious it's the Yamato MaiHime transformation of Nagihiko in Shugo Chara.) That being said, I've done a bunch of research on Kimono's as well, like the different types, what a kimono consists of, etc. They're made from a single "bolt", so they're very long long loonngg peices of cloth sewn together on the sides and down the back. The fabric I used wasn't long enough to do this, so I had to use 2 rectangles (and sew them up on the shoulders) rather than 2, which in turn messed up my collar.... I probably could've worked my way around that, but, oh well. This is my first attempt with pretty cheap fabric. Once I practice more I'll make that extravagant one for him one day . The sleeves as well had to be sewn together on the top, when normally they'd only be sewn up the side and on the bottom. The style of the kimono is technically a "konmon", because the pattern repeats itself, though I tried to align the pattern to make it more of a "Houmongi"... since those are more elegant :') I also have the sleeves fairly long, in the style of a furisode. (A girly Kimono.) Oh, so yes, note - I'm trying to make a girly kimono lol. I know he's a boy, but the girl kimono's are more cute... and, it's a long story (=w=;; I've lined the inside partially with a gold fabric, imitating the vintage kimono I own. In the sleeves, I don;t really know what I did, since I half imitated a Junban (which is an under kimono) and just lining.... And I just did the fake juban collar,since I don't feel like making one after making this kimono D8 Augh. I need to iron the bottom too so the lining doesn't poof out so much. And sorry for all the sticky out threads... I'm a pretty messy sewer Dx I got lazy with the obi... and there's just a butterfly tie at the back. Which is detachable. (The obi is being held together with safety pins right now lol xD; I'll actually attach velcro or snaps at some point.) who knows. ANYWAYS, enough talk! Here are some pictures :')! Please let me know what I can fix etc! (I apologize for the awful quality images.... my camera is very finicky ): ) And a nice one for good measure~ Thanks for looking!
I'd say you did a really good job for a first attempt. I like the fabric color/pattern choices. I think the only suggestion I could give is to use an iron to make the edges more crisp. Good job though!
Thank you :')! Like i said in my lengthy description, I know I need to iron, I'm just too lazy to do so right now. I'll post another picture once I have, however :') Thanks!
I really like the fabric. It is a really good start but two things jump out to me: It doesn't look like it has okumi or ohashori (although I guess if it's a boy wearing it, the latter might be a stylistic choice? ^^; ) Also, I really love that obi style, it's very cute.
Thank you :')! Thanks :') It isn't the best quality lol... but at least it looks nice :') It doesn't D8 Lol. Part of the reason is I didn't have enough fabric to sew one. The black fabric i used was from a remnant i found a long time ago, therefore it didn't leave me with a whole lot of wiggle room. Like i stated up there, I would've made the kimono longer too, if I had more fabric... and thus wielding no ohashori ): Thank you :')! I'll make a datejime at some point too lol. but again this was only my first attempt, so I'll work harder to make better ones in the future. For the next one I make, I'm thinking about just making junbans to practice (unlined ones) but because it's essentially the same pattern, it'll give me some practice :')
Thank you :')! It took me about 3-4 hours I think?... I don't really know lol. I know when I started it was light outside, and in the afternoon, and when I was finished it was getting dark xD;
Oh, I know what you mean about the fabric being too short, if you look at some older kimonos in the back, you'll notice that instead of sewing at the shoulders, it's sewn farther down the back so that it doesn't interfere with the collar. I tried this for one of my doll's furisode and it worked quite well and doesn't look bad at all, especially since your obi will be resting in that area anyway.
Oh, awesome! I'd really love to make one with no seam on the shoulders at all, but I'll defiantly try that method too! Thanks :')!
Thanks :')! No, I didn't use any patterns. A kimono (of that caliber anyway lol) is easy to do without a pattern. Once it becomes more complicated I'll try planning a little more before hand. Kimono's are very structured, so once you understand how one works, a pattern isn't entirely necessary :')
