Aesthetics First(ish) Face-up

Oct 13, 2019

    1. ... First *ish* face-up, because I gave my very first BJD a face-up about 10 years ago. It was so long ago (and such a bad face-up LMAO) that this might as well be my first!

      I spent the afternoon trying my hand at giving my Kanadoll Adrian a face-up. There are parts of it I like, parts I don't, but I'm mostly just proud I finished it! Haha.

      All advice is welcome! In particular, about eyebrows: I wanted flat, even-looking eyebrows, which I think was a success, but they seem kind of 2D... any advice for giving more dimension to brows? (Lighter/darker strands added in, more pastels...)

    2. He looks awesome!!! Especially for your first(ish) time!! I really like the delicate linework under the eyes and on the eyelids. And those eyebrows really have their own stylistic charm imo! If you want a little more consistent color, you can always lay down a pastel layer first! Or sometimes, I'll wet a brush and pull pigment up from a watercolor pencil to get a light base for the eyebrow. Another method people use is using a lighter color than the skin to highlight the space between some of the front hairs! But I'm not a professional by any means ^^;
      I might also add a bit of variation in the deepest parts of the lips, but the gradient you've built on the actual lips is so pretty!

    3. This is really amazing! Like the user above me mentioned, the linework around the eyes is great and is probably my favorite part. You did a wonderful job detailing, and it's all the more impressive being your first(ish) faceup. Congrats!

    4. It's very pretty ! I especially love the eyebrows ! Maybe you should add a little bit of pink on his cheeks ? He would look more "human". But that's just my opinion :)

    5. Impressive

    6. @chatdemon Thank you! I like a lot of delicate lines, in drawings and in face-ups. :) Putting down pastel first makes sense - I was following a tutorial that started with linework, so I went for that. I'll have to get a few more pastels! And thank you for the suggestion re: the lips. I was having a hard time building up the color, and I ended up putting a line in the lips/corners - not something I'm a huge fan of, but it photographs decently well. Thanks for your tips!

      @Moodia Thank you! It's kind of hard to tell in the pic, but the sides of his face are blushed pretty good - but maybe he could use some on the apples, too. Thanks for the feedback!

      @deviljewels @Teddy Thank you!! :aheartbea

    7. adding some lighter strand shades to the eyebrows might give them a little 3D effect

    8. I really like how you did the lashes and the lid creases, it looks so natural! The colors you used for the lips blend nicely and work well together. I love how you gave the brows personality instead of a manicured line. Only thing I’d say to try is maybe add a little pastel to the brows, it can soften them a bit while making them look a little fuller. (If that’s the look you’re going for, that is. :).) All in all, I think you did a fantastic job!

    9. Well done! It's really natural. I don't think that adding more blush or eye shadow is necessary. The natural look makes him more realistic in my opinion. For a first makeup it's very good because it's not allways easy to follow a tutorial.
