First Head Sculpt ( UPDATE! )

Jun 3, 2006

    1. Okay, I thought I wouldn't be so shy and post my head sculpt. This my friends is a he, He doesn't really have a name yet so I'm more than open to suggestions!

He hasn't been sanded yet, just been shelacked in turpenoid. lol

      His eyes are supposed to be closed. n_n;

I finished painting him, and I gave him a face today and a wig today. The wig is a little too big for his head because I wasn't using a pattern or anything...

I think I need a gentler sand paper... when I gesso-ed him, I got all these deep grooves on the paint and on the original sculpt... what grain sandpaper do most people use? ( I have three kinds in my house right now, one for metal, one for wood and one for dry wall... I used the one for wood but I don't think it was gentle enough. lol )

    2. nifty. I like the way you did the closed eyes. You have an interesting sculpting style.

    3. he looks really cool! i love how he looks like a character i once read in a book (Silk, from the belgaraid, by david eddings). he would make a really unique and amazing bjd.

      what was your inspiration?

    4. He reminds me of that screaming man picture. You know the one like the "Home Alone" scream?

    5. My inspiration? I like to draw on Tim Burton's quirky character designs, so I guess I pulled some elements from his latest film Corpse Bride ( such a sweet love story. ^_^ )

But other than that, I just kept playing with it until I liked what I saw. lol

Thank you everyone for all the nice things you've said!

    6. *laughs* does he really? I never thought of it like that. But I can see where that's comming from. lol

    7. oh, he DOES remind me of Silk.....

I dont' make dolls (absolutely NO talent at sculpting) but I DO restore things that require sanding, and I use a VERY fine grade wet and dry sandpaper.. I get mine from auto accessory shops, and ask for the finest grade they have. Its not expensive for the result you get.

Great job, I admire anyone with the guts to post a creation here :>

      Seek peace

    8. When I first saw this I thought... wow this person could work with Tim Burton. Then I scrolled down... XD Guess I wasn't too far off, eh? =P

Anyways, it really is beautiful. So unique and stunning really. Very beautiful... I'm jealous of your talent. =P

    9. I personally think that he needs more of a forehead. Eyes are often located middle of the head. Other than that, you're progressing very well.

    10. Midori - Maybe you're right and he needs a bit more of a forehead, I think it's stylistic tendency... I'll try giving him a longer forehead though ! Thanks alot for you constructive critism! ^_^

Kyrie - Wow, work for Mr.Burton himself? lol you flatter me my dear! I don't think I'm that good. But thanks for the nice compliments, it means a lot too me.

Rattimoth - Hhmm... you keep mentioning this 'silk' character, he seems very intriguing. Now I've got that name stuck in my head! XD If I don't come up with anything else, I may just end up calling him Silk. What's this 'Silk' character like?

PS- I ran down to the hardware store and picked up a super fine grain sand paper and it's doing the trick, thanks!

    11. lol wow i guessed tim burton.. XD
he looks like he could be Victor's brother!

    12. Ooh, he's gorgeous. ;D I love his soft, pale look, very nice.

    13. For sanding, try a 200 grit for rough sanding and then work down to 400-600 grit for really fine sanding (it isn't actually 200, it is usually something like 220).

I like wet-dry sandpaper (it is usually a black color).

I generally stop at 400 because I like to leave some tooth on the item, I find the MSC or paint bites better.

    14. Oooh, he looks like something from my sister's Amano artbooks!

I use sanding sponges because it's easier to get a smooth finish with them even when dry. Don't wet sand gesso - it might make it peel. I use 80-100 grit for very rough sanding, then 200 grit to get the shape right, then a quick sanding with 400 grit to get rid of big grooves. Then gesso, then 400 grit in small circles so it won't leave marks, then polishing with the corner of a T-shirt, which will make the gesso very shiny. This lets you see any scratches that you missed. Clean up those scratches with 400 grit, and keep polishing the gesso to check it until it's nice and smooth. Then you can spray the gesso with MSC or whatever so it isn't shiny.

    15. He reminds me alot of Kuroku in the old anime Unico and the Island of Lost Toys(1980's)!But I do definately see the Tim Burton influence in him too.

    16. Looks like Kakashi to me (Y'know, from Naruto.)

    17. I really LOVE this sculpt
It reminds me of Victor from The Corspe Bride and actually quite a few of Tim Burtons claymation characters!

    18. I think he looks really incredible. He kind of looks Inuit.
I know if he'd open his eyes, he'd have an incredible story to tell ...

    19. ^_^ haha I love Silk too. It's a personal goal of mine to become as good a lawbreaker as he.

    20. You mean the Edward Munch The scream painting?

    21. I really like the paint job and the sculpt....it reminds of several art-dolls that I adore! Great job...unique style! :-)
