After multiple attempts & giving up because I messed up, I finally got a sculpt as far as mould production! He’s taken me a full year. From learning blender, through learning 3D printing, then finishing & creating the mould. I named him Marshall, after my character. I wanted realism, older and not traditionally ‘pretty’. He’s got a pretty big nose and very big ears, and I’m very happy with him! Took a lot of work, but hoping sculpt 2, who’s in progress, will be finished soon as well (unfortunately there’s a blockage in the silicone supply chain so I can’t create more moulds). Here’s a collage…
He has a great face - very realistic and unique! I hope you'll soon be able to get the supplies you need to continue the project.
It must feel so great!! I hope I'll be where you are someday - I would love to sculpt heads myself, but I haven't had the chance to really try it yet (other than a little experimentation with ZBrush, which is super hard!). I would like to prioritize learning ZBrush, since it seems to be a commonly chosen doll-making program, but I've heard Blender is easier (and less expensive).
Blender is certainly cheaper, but not easier…. If I could pay for it I’d have gone for Zbrush as it’s easier to sculpt than model imo. I do use Zbrush too, but I only have a super cheap version & prefer to just work in blender. To be honest, I’ve sculpted on stuff like Zbrush before, but the first time I tried blender I uninstalled it a day later because I couldn’t figure it out. Maybe it’s just me, but yeah, now I prefer it.
Update: got the resin in, and casting today. I’ll be submitting him to mods for topicality so hopefully he’ll be shown off in the new doll threads after this! He’s not going up for sale, but having done this I think any dolls I ever consider selling will go to a company for casting. I cannot do this 10 or 15 times with a whole doll.
