First head and lots of questions

Jul 2, 2015

    1. Hi!

So, Im gonna show the head now. I had an aged italian man in mind, fitted to Granado bodies.

So far I know Ive messed up the eyes. Also because I put in the eyes in a stupid way. Now I want to wait for prototype cast and epoxy to fix it.
Ears and headback need proper sanding and smoothing still, too.
I fear cutting open and doing again might destroy too much.

My Question is, besides "How does he look?" and "Any suggestions" is "Which is the best way to do the inside now"
Im torn between cutting him open and filling inside, or do a cast first and then add inside inside the mold.

Thanks for taking your time and taking a look over this clay misery <3

    2. WOW!!! First head? I think he is far from "clay misery"!!! What kind of clay did you use for him? Depending on how hard it is, I think cutting the head cap part off would be easier. Is he hollow inside?

I quite like the lines around his eyes and his mouth, as well as his nose and lips!!

    3. Hehe thx! He is a misery becasue theres wax flakes everywhere the house now ;D And yes, he's hollow. Ball inside.

Chavant hard. It's oil based clay. Waxlike. Its hard like a candle. Need to be warmed up to form. I work with "hard" and "Automobile" but I guess most sculptor will suggest you medium.
It can also be frozen and sanded with sandpaper. I did cosplay props years ago, thats why I chose the harder types.

Some lines will disappear after casting and sanding even, but Ill try to keep the important ones. <3

    4. Hello. Found you. Looking pretty good over all. The only thing I could suggest is the right side of skull looks like lower than the left. It might be the picture but some people like to nitpick symmetries bit too much so you might want to keep that in your mind.
I have used Chavant long time ago. Can't say I liked it and I don't remember how durable it was compared to Castilene. I would have used ball bearing balls for eyes so that would be easier to see the location of eyes while sculpting and no need to worry about scratching the doll eyes. If I were you, I would open him up and hollow the head inside. You can still work on outside after it has been hollowed.

      Hope that helps.
      Good luck.

    5. First human sculpt? You did really well. I think it is a convincing realistic face. Did you have a special person in mind when sculpting?
I have never tried a more mature looking face myself, it must be quite difficult, but I think you got the sunken cheeks, the hollows and the lines quite well.
I was going to say something about the shape of the ears, but you said you are going to work on them …
I really like his nose. A real, manly nose
I am not sure about the lips, but I can't quite put my finger on it. The mouth looks good in the frontal view, but something is bothering me in the side view. Maybe the curve between nose and upper lip is too strong.

Can't help with the modelling clay questions, I have no experience with Chavant.

    6. It is great! You are extremely talented!
The only drawback it is slightly asymmetrical, but even if you don't fix it, it is still ok.
