Wearables First hardcap wig...gone wrong but not as wrong as it coulde have.

Feb 28, 2017

    1. Hey!

So I finished my first hardcap yarn wig yesterday and I'm actually pretty pleased with the outcome...except for the fact that it doesn't fit on the doll I made it for.

I made it for the Doll-Chateau doll on the right, the doll it actually fits is the doll on the left--and only with a silicone wigcap on. Kinda a big difference in size and I was wondering where I might have gone wrong? I got my saran-wrap as tight around the dolls head as I could and I used a rubber band to hold the fabric tight to the dolls head. I did end up taking the cap off before it had dried 100%, but it had seemed to be dried until I had pulled it off. Could moving the cap before it's completely dry really make that much of a difference? Could I have done something else wrong?

Here's a picture of the wig on the doll that it fits on, for reference:

I'm actually really happy with the way that the color turned out since the whole point of this experiment was to see what a wig made out of the variegated color yarn would look like (I was curious and couldn't find an example :sweat) and the cut didn't turn out as horrible as I thought it would:lol:

Thanks in advance for any help/ideas!

    2. After doing 2 hardcap wigs i believe waiting for it to dry makes a lot of difference since the glue can stretch out when partially dry, also another reason may be the type of glue you used, some glues do expand after drying. I would recommend testing the hardcap on before you put on the wefts. Its so much easier to make adjustments this time, rather than when the wig is done.

    3. Thanks @xMissfairlady :) I used ModPodge because it was what I had on hand. I didn't even think to test it, honestly; it seemed so straightforward.

    4. I used elemers glue and I also had this same problem :c the hard cap was too big on the head. I do believe though that I took off the hard cap when the it was not 100% dry (but it felt like it was) so I believe the drying portion is the key to having the perfect fitting hard cap

    5. Also that's such a gorgeous wig!! :D I really love the color and style. My first wig came out like crap because I used uneven yarn wefts haha (I was in a rush and impatient)

    6. @ashvianey Thanks :whee: It was a fun experiment with color, and good practice even if it didn't turn out perfect. I was kind of in a rush too, but the longer I'm in this hobby the more I realize that everything we do in this hobby is a practice patience. Think I'd know better by now, lol.

    7. well. I believe modpodge doesn't expand when dried... maybe its really because of it not being 100% dried.. you should wait a couple more hours :)

    8. Did you put the glue on fabric or directly onto the plastic wrap? I love your wig, the style, the color. I think it's fantastic!!

    9. @xMissfairlady Yeah, I'm definitely gonna have to let it dry longer...think I'll just be leaving this sort of thing overnight from now on.

@Black Widow I put the glue on the fabric using a paint brush. Thanks, I'm glad you like it :blush

    10.
    11. I hear that!

    12. Yep, wait till it's really dry. Also, be careful with a couple of things: one is stretching the cap when removing it when it's drying and two is that around the ears, the cling film (Saran wrap) can pull away from the head. I tie string, yarn or a thin strip of cling film around the ears usually over the fabric to make sure it stays tight to the head there. It looks odd, but when you cut around the ears, it's removed. This really helps with shorter hair, or where you need the cap to fit around the ears perfectly.

^_^ good luck with the next one!

    13. @Spuggey Like just around the ears or around the head just above the ears? Cuz I had an elastic around the head just above the ears (over the fabric).

And thanks:) I'll definitely be more careful with the next one!

    14. How did you get your yarn wefts so straight?
When I have tried, mine come out very wavy/crimped and poofy.

    15. Yeah, they come out like that, but you can use a straight iron on low heat to straighten them out.

    16. Mod podge especially tends to warp, expand or shrink if not dried totally. I feel like I get a better result with Aleene's Fabric Fusion (not the quick dry kind, the regular stuff.) Great first wig! My first few had to all be tossed. They looked nothing like as nice.

    17. Mmm yes when using Mod Podge you always need to ensure it dries well before pulling it off the doll's head. I use it for all of the wigs I make and I always leave it to set for over 24 hours. That might be overkill, but to me, it's easier to just make one cap. I also do several layers built up over a couple of days, to create a really rigid cap.

    18. This was really helpful to see your process. I have tried making wig caps before and they never turn out right. Thank you for your post. The wig has lovely colors by the way.

    19. @Rosslyn & @Quiet and Insane that's really good to know...I'll definitely be leaving it to dry longer. 24hrs sounds like it might not be overkill after all . And Thanks @Rosslyn I'm just glad I had a doll whose head ended up fitting, lol.

@EKRJS Glad it helped! And thanks, I really like how the colors turned out too.

    20. Good luck with your future wigs! :)

    21. Such a pretty wig! My first attempt with a glued wig cap turned out a disaster, maybe I didn't wait long enough for layers to dry, since they all ended up getting stuck together and not laying right and just in general looking really gross. But the cap turned out pretty well, though I also second what some others said up above, always best to let the cap itself sit for at least 24 hours just to make 100% sure it's done drying. Mod podge especially can be finicky with drying and layers imo.
