Aesthetics First Faceup

Jun 27, 2016

    1. This is my first faceup on ...well it's actually my second try after I got impatient and didn't wait for the sealant to dry completely...
It ended up with me accidentally scraping off some of the layers u..u
      [IMG]
So I cleaned her up and retried:

(I left the inner eye line and inside the lips for convenience)
      And here's the result!

The head I used is a Dollzone Jade.

So.. what do you think? How can I improve?

    2. Hmm...I like it. You did a great job on the eyelashes. That's something I'm still struggling with. I'd say the biggest thing is that it's a little smudgy...but that's not always a bad thing. Dolly face ups are partly an art, like everything else, so...just keep practicing and develop your own style.

    3. This is really good! :D I'm actually going to continue working on my 5th faceup. ^^ (Well, my third completed faceup anyway. :sweat) All I can say is, just keep practicing! Be it on your doll or paper, or even a printed out picture of your doll! And take breaks if you get frustrated. I know that feeling all to well. X'D Sorry if I'm not much help, I'm not an expert. ^__^;;;

    4. I figured I'd need more practice u//u
Any idea how to avoid smudging? I've always been a messy painter but I tended to use that as a style when I painted but I figure I should avoid smudges here >//<

The lashes actually took me so many retries to get right OTL
      Ah thank you c:
And I think I'll try to keep practicing- as much as my timetable allows... Maybe one day I'll be brave enough to do something a touch more in my style u//u

    5. Good effort! I like the soft, natural look you achieved

    6. It looks good :) I like the way you did the lips!

    7. Looks go for a first effort! keep it up:thumbup

try to remember the if you want a skin look, we humans contain more colors than just Skin tone + peach

try adding greens, lavenders and blues in appropriate areas, like a super subtle soft shading in purple under the eyes maybe ad colder tones of blue or cold taupe to add shades and dimension.

Look at your own face or friends and family, dry to determine where to add shadowing and different tones and lines without making the doll look tired.

Naturally if you want a classic old-school vibe this faceup hits the mark already :D

    8. i really love the lips! they look so rosy and plump ^__^

    9. Looks good! What pastel did you use?

    10. @Teacup Creations You're totally welcome! Personally, I don't think it looks smudged, just well blended (But that's just my opinion and I'm still a beginner myself. :sweat). And yeah, keep on practicing and you'll get the hang of it! I'd love to see your progress, and someday your own style! Keep up the good work, and remember, find what works best for you. <3 :3nodding:

    11. I love the detail, especially of the lips and eye lashes. I would totally commission you haha :)

    12. @Teacup Creations

I've heard a few suggestions, but it's all dependent on why it's smudging. Basics that I've heard are to wear gloves and keep your pencils sharp, and remember to keep track of how often you are sealing your work.

But you did excellent! I'm still jealous of dem lashes.

    13. @BeeryCherry Just some cheap ones I got from Amazon (they're called 'inscribe pastels', I think?) I wouldn't recommend them, though, they're not very pigmented and a lot of the colours are hideous :huh?:

@LaPlaceDemon Thanks for the tip! I'll try that next time~ I kinda wanted to play it safe the first time around... faceups are a lot different from paintings u//u

@kamikakushi Thank you <3 I think that's mostly to do with the sculpt, though- the DZ Jade head is just so gorgeously proportioned! :love

    14. Oh, okay, thank you very much for your reply! I know that Fiber pastel is good one for dolly make ups!

    15. My first fave up was horrid ;u:
But yours looks good! Just maybe tweek the eyebrows a bit more and add a bit of red to the cheeks instead of brown and voila. :)

    16. @Teacup Creations It can depend on what areas are smudging. Sosogomi gave some good ideas, but a few others came to my mind. The pastels can smudge if you apply them too thickly, or if you use a dirty brush, or try to use too many colors at once. And the quality of pastels will affect that as well.
What I usually do is do one color per layer, and try to go lightly until I get the saturation I want. :)
