Aesthetics First Faceup on a BJD

Jul 9, 2023

    1. Hello doll friends!

This is my first faceup on a resin BJD, I have previously done faceups on 2 cheaper fashion dolls for practice. I have a lot of experience doing makeup on myself and others and I feel like that has really helped me to understand faceups.

I would be really grateful for any feedback, I'm hoping to get much better at painting tiny crisp lines like eyebrows and lashes. I would also like to add more shadow and contrast colours in future faceups, I added a small amount of blue in the inner corners of the eyes. Are there any other places where I can add some blue or purple colours to give the face more shadow and dimension? I would also love to include more detail on the lips in the future so I would appreciate tips for painting lip lines and highlights and also what colours you like to use for lips!

Thank you for reading and I hope you like her! :)

    2. This is a fantastic faceup!! Stunning work! Good job! :D

Honestly it's hard to imagine that you need help with anything. Since you asked about the blue, I think that depends on how much realism you're going for. I've seen people use blue in other places, and for me personally it stands out too much on dolls. It's true that on real people, there are different undertones on the face, but it doesn't really read that way when you're looking at someone. That is to say, you don't notice it. On a doll you have to be careful because it's easy to be too heavy handed with subtle things like that. But I think if you're going for a stylized faceup rather than hyper-realism, you've put blue in just the right place. My own faceups definitely lean stylized and I put blue in that same place, and sometimes bring it down under the eye a bit, too. If you'd like to go more realistic with your faceups, hopefully somebody will chime in with the right places to put some blue.

    3. This is just gorgeous, amazing work! I use blueish tones on the temples and under the lower lip, and on the place where you used it. Very subtle, personally I find it adds realism - if that is what you go for, it depends on the sculpt. Again, you've done a wonderful job! :love

    4. Aww thank you so much! I'm not going for hyper realistic but I think I would like to try slightly more realistic faceups in the future once my skills have improved, more shadows and skin texture and stuff

    5. Oooh I didn't think to add shadows there, that's helpful thank you!

    6. Hello Fran! I didn't understand it was your first faceup on a resin doll. Congrats, she is so lovely! The brows are very realistic, wow. About the lashes, maybe you could use more shades, but that's not obligatory.

    7. Thank you so much! I was thinking of adding some white hair strokes to the lashes to highlight the inner corner but I worried I wouldn't be able to make it look right! I will try it next time :3nodding:

    8. Wow, you did an amazing job. She looks so lifelike! Nice work, especially for your first faceup!

    9. Amazing first faceup! She looks lovely

I don't have much else to contribute (and am learning some new tips here as well) but as a matter of personal preference, I wonder if maybe a bit more pastel as a light base for the eyebrows would soften some of the lines?
And echoing earlier comments that you could also play with shades on the eyelashes. Overall though, this is stunning work!

    10. You did an amazing job! Like others have said, I honestly don't have any real tips/suggestions (mostly because I'm new myself), but I couldn't even think of anything to point out even if I did have actual suggestions! The fine details are lovely, very crisp yet still on the realistic side. Looking at the photos closely, I feel like maybe the left eyebrow (on the right in the photos) is slightly less dense than the other? But that very well could just be me and has nothing to do with the technique. Beautiful work!

    11. I don’t have any suggestions or tips because I’m not artistic in that way, I just wanted to encourage you to keep doing faceups because I think it’s pretty amazing for a first one!

    12. Looks great! Did you put gloss on the inner corners of the eyes? It looks a bit sticky there. The gloss looks fine on the lips though. Did you spray sealant on top of the gloss or was it older or of lower quality? Oh, and don't be afraid of using more colour and going darker. I bet your next one is going to be even better!
