First faceup, looking for tips

Jul 27, 2020

    1. My first faceup! I painted models many years ago, so this feels like a return to form. Any critique is welcome at this point since I am looking to improve my skills, but I would specifically love tips on eyelashes, upper and lower.

I also hand painted each individual freckle, but I was wondering if people have other methods for this?

    2. I don't really have any of the tips you've asked for but I'm shocked this is your first faceup! I love it so much! And besides doing that thing where you ... how do you describe it... get some paint on a fan brush and run your fingernail over it so the hairs bend back and then spring forward again, does that make sense? I would think you could get freckles that way too but I love how yours look! My favorite part is probably the dark shading inside the lip of the eye holes. It's really striking with eyes in place and her lips are so delicately painted!

    3. This is very helpful though! Like, I have heard of the paint spatter technique but I didn’t realize that a fan brush was a good tool for that. Thank you! ... and I’m not totally inexperienced at painting, I used to paint mode dragons... but this is my first doll. :3

    4. I think I've used a fan brush before for it. Or a flat one, not a pointed one. Something that will have a more predictable and larger surface to splatter off your fingertip (or tool moving the bristles). Test on paper first until you can get the desired spot spacing consistently :)

    5. Thank you so much! I will do exactly that. I don't actually dislike the look i got by painting individual freckles, but I wanted to try other things too.

    6. I don’t have any tips, but I am living for those freckles! What did you use to paint them?

    7. Just a teeny tiny synthetic brush and a lot of patience/layers!

    8. Well, social distancing has given me all the time in the world, so I think I’ll give it a shot when I get my doll.

    9. Please post your results if you do! I’d love to see.

    10. This is so amazing for your first faceup!! it looks incredible! i think your technique looks very nice and its down to personal preference but the only thing id recommend is maybe some more subtle freckles and maybe adding some more colours to them too so they look more under the skin if that makes sense. but again thats just preference and youve done an amazing job!

    11. Thanks so much! I agree, I think more subtle freckles could only be a good thing.... especially on the forehead, which looks a bit blank, in hindsight. Thank you for the input!

    12. No worries! honestly though you did such an amazing job!! shes super cute and already has so much personality! my first faceup (especially the freckles and eyebrows) was so awful i wiped it just about straight away haha!

    13. Yeah, I think my prior experience painting models helped me, hehe... but oof yeah, I was glad I did the eyebrows first, because those were the hardest! And I kind of want to try something more subtle for bottom lashes next time too.

    14. I've not got much to offer in the tips department as I've only done one face-up myself haha.

One thing I think would be something to work on is cleaner eyelash lines.
I think the hairs on the eyebrows look great but the tips of the eyelashes are a little messy by comparison (mine are too ngl).
In some places there's also a bit of a disconnect (it gets lighter at the base of the lash) so just make sure that your lashes are fully connected to the lash line.

I quite like the face-up overall. It looks very cute! :)

    15. Thank you for the feedback! I definitely agree that I need to focus more the next time I'm painting eyelashes, i feel that was my biggest weak point... so thanks for confirming that. I think I was trying to highlight the individual strands, but what happened was that I ended up with a blocky area that makes it the lashes look lighter at the base... gonna keep this in mind for next time!

    16. I watched this video where someone demonstrates how they use a brush to put on freckles :) Yours turned out really nice though

    17. Thank you for finding that video @Gumi that was exactly what I was trying to describe but I wasn't doing it so well as the video presenter :)

    18. Oh my gosh, thank you so much!
