Aesthetics First faceup (linked pictures)

Dec 31, 2016

    1. I just finished my first faceup. I aimed for something between fantasy and realism since my guy's sculpt (Dollshe Grant) is rather realistic. His forehead really sticks out so doing eyebrows was hard. Here's a photo with flashlight:

His skin tone is copper oriental and he's a msd. He was almost the size of a barbie head so I couldn't include all the detail I wanted to. I used army painter matte varnish spray, pastels, faber castell watercolour pencils and small paintbrushes. I have never attempted anything like this before but I have been a portrait artist in junior high. I need practice with blushing tho. A lot of it. Advices welcome.

Up next is his OE head and some body blushing. I hope it turns out better haha. I made him based on my drawing of my OC Ludvig.

    3. Whoa!!! That's a beautiful first face up! Very nice

    4. Thank you @Kattikat and @Bearpeach ^.^ having seen some first faceups by other people I was positively surprised even myself :P

    5. That's your first faceup?! :o
Oh my god it's beautiful! You should be so very proud of yourself. Well done, and I can't wait to see more work from you because if this is you at the beginning, I can only imagine how good you'll be with time! :abow:

    6. this is pretty good for a first face up

    7. This is amazing for a first one! :o

      ...or just faceups in general...

    8. This guy looks real! You did all this detail on a head about the size of a Barbie? Wow, you are talented! Fantastic work and I do mean it! :abow:

    9. This is really great job! I admire it!

    10. I saw your post about the eyebrow placement on the Dolllshe thread and commented before I saw your pictures! Oh my! I love the way you did his eyebrows That really opens up the eye sockets! It gives him a expression of bliss rather than sleeping. You did a excellent job! Wish I had your skill! I love your guy!

    11. Oh wow! I didn't expect him to look so very realistic! I'm a complete newbie, so I don't think my opinion counts for much, but I love your face up. I love the freckles, the blushing, the eyebrows. He looks like I could just poke him and he'd wake up.

    12. That's a really good face up in itself, and then even more so since this is your first! :thumbup Great job with the eyebrows, since that's something a lot of people find tricky. It also looks like you did them with a brush and paint too, which is something I struggle with (I end up using a really sharp watercolour pencil).

Maybe one slight thing I'd try to do is to get the brush strokes for the eyelashes thinner so they look more separated and realistic (although to be fair, yours is a sleeping head so it's like upper and lower lashes combined, so you'd expect them to be really full).

Also, this depends if it's your cup of tea or not, you can try adding some cool tones like blues, teals, purples into part of the blushing (around eyes and temple area) to mimic veins for an ultra realistic look. I really think for this, less is more, since it's really easy to go overboard and for your doll to end up looking like a sickly zombie. :o

    13. Thank you all! :) @maladict I will try thinner eyelashes for his oe head. I'm gonna have troubles with how to make it look like he has upper lashes there since the lashes I have cover almost a third of his eye sockets.

Too bad that I can't spray his hands or other head yet since it has been around -20 this week. I got some better pastels that have more intensive colours so it might be hard to do "subtle veins". I love veins tho and that is one of the reasons I chose him. I used Helene Holz as inspiration and tried to pick some tricks from her since she makes a lot of veins too.
