Aesthetics First faceup attempt, Polter

Feb 7, 2014

    1. I never thought I would do a faceup this soon. I am still fairly new to the hobby and always thought that faceups are really hard to do and requires airbrush equipment and very professional top secret stuff. Until, I read more tutorials and learn that soft pastels and watercolour pencils are used as well. Then, I started collecting materials. My first blank doll head arrived few days ago. He is Polter and his sculpt is IOS Chaos~
I would like some feedback on it because I want to improve and prepare for another head who is coming. Please let me know if there are details that I can add to enhance this one! I am also pondering whether to give him eyelashes or not.

I have compiled the photos into one:

He always wears a mask, but here is another close up:

Thank you for taking your time to look at this! ^^

    2. If this is your first faceup I'd say you have a great journey ahead of you. You have some wonderful skills going on there. :) I really like the shadowing along his nose, around his eyes and under his lips. The lips themselves are also well done. They suit his visual character from my point of view.

For constructive criticism: His eyebrows end a bit too "blunt". Eyebrows are usually thicker over the inner corner of the eye, and have thinner ends towards the temples. This helps frame the eyes a lot more! And the eyeliner/color around his eyes are a bit uneven. The (his) left eye makeup looks thicker than his right.

      I hope this helps :)

    3. Thank you very much for the CC and positive feedback! :) They really helped!
I didn't realize the eyeliner around his eyes were uneven until you told me.
I'm waiting for a good day without rain to fix his eyebrows. They are indeed a bit thick at the end, I am planning to extend it towards the temple.

    4. For your first one this is great. It definantly has a style to it and gives him a personality. The only thing I would critique is your line quality the wavy edges to the liner and coners of mouth but that just comes with getting a stedy hand which is hard to control some times I still have problems with shakieness. But other wise I think the colors you used are great. The lips even though dark are really natural. And the liner isn't over whelming. Maybe lighten up in the bottom lashes a bit but it dosent look bad with them there by any means. I can't wait to see your next face up:)

    5. Thank you very much for the comment and CC :) I think Chaos is a really nice head to work with. I will practice more and try to get a steady hand for a better line quality!
What do you suggest to lighten up the bottom lashes? Adding another layer on it? I am still doing some touching up and fixing, so I will consider different suggestions to make it better ^^

    6. Hello there :) I did some touch up and fixing yesterday when it's not raining. I hope it looks better now.

    7. That looks great, especially for your first one! Congratulations! You did a fantastic job with the shading.
