Faceups first faceup ♡

Mar 16, 2023

    1. It's pretty late at night now (so forgive the unflattering lighting), but I'm really quite excited to share with you all about finally having finished my first faceup from start to end - to experience doing faceups has been a pretty big dream of mine since I was 12. <3

I finally procured most of the materials I need for a faceup, so I couldn't wait to start. This one was done right this afternoon - I was working from home and cleared most of my work stuff for the week, so I got to it. Because of that I didn't manage to take any in-progress pictures though, and I was sorely tempted to give up halfway through during the 'ugly phase'. Thankfully it got better towards the end though... (shudders)

There are many things about this attempt that I'm not that happy with, but I feel like now I know what to do better, and that I should plan my steps instead of just doing whatever I feel like at the moment. Also, I really didn't expect using a brush to be so difficult, nor for lips to end up being the most difficult part of the face.

I'll probably redo this sometime in the future, but for now - here is my Ren, an old Volks F17 with his new faceup:

It's really nice to own a doll that's done up by your own hand. Whilst it's always nice to have professionals do your doll's faceups for you, I understand the appeal of doing it yourself now. :3nodding:

    6. Aw, thank you so much! Though I struggled with the brush, the lashes end up being very fun for me, so I'm glad you like it. <3 Hopefully I become more confident with using brushes soon! People make it look so easy! :XD:

Thank you so much, that's a high compliment! It's my first time for sure though, I never expected pastels to be so splotchy, nor for all the mediums to be so difficult to control. Yikes!

Ahhh thank you so much, you're too sweet!! :chibi (I do draw occasionally as a hobby, perhaps that helps a bit. :aheartbea Working on 2D and 3D feels so different, though :( I have much to improve on!)

Thank you! The eyes ended up being the most fun for me too :D

    7. Congratulations in your first face up! I completely understand the fear in going into one, I haven't been able to try my own face ups yet because I just get too nervous. But she looks absolutely precious, so sweet and so rosy. You did soooo good.

    8. Echoing that this being your first faceup is insane - you've done a phenomenal job!

    9. Your FIRST faceup??? This looks positively professional. Those eyebrows are so delicately done~

    10. You have a natural talent. Beautiful faceup.

    11. Wonderful work, bravo! You definitely could go in a professional direction with so much talent.
I love everything you did on the eyes and eyebrows :love:love:love

    12. Wow if this is a your first faceup, it looks really damn good. How you make the face parts so shiny? What type of varnish?

    13. You must be an artist. This is exceptional. I am likewise nervous to start. But you are an inspiration!

    14. Oh wow, I wasn't expecting to wake up to so many nice comments. You are all too sweet, your comments have made my day!! :fangirl: I have a lot to improve on, but your encouragements have only made me want to do more and do better. :aheartbea

Thank you!! I was really nervous too to be honest... but I was trying to psych myself that if I really do screw up, I can always remove everything and try again. But the fear is so understandable, because what if I just never get it right? :( I hope you'll get to try faceups out sometime! With experience, I suppose the nervousness will die off

Thank you so much!! <3 I've got much to improve on, but wouldn't that be nice! I used to admire faceup artists who took commissions so much as a kid :chibi

Thank you! I used the typical Tamiya Acrylic Gloss X-22 (undiluted), mixed with some Zoukeimura Shine Pearl Powder - but I'm sure any other kind of doll-safe mica/pearl powder works. (I learned that a little bit of the powder goes a long way!) :3nodding:

Aw thank you!! Oh I'm still nervous thinking about doing faceups, but I'm sure repeated exposure will help us! I hope you're able to start and enjoy this part of the hobby soon!

    15. WOW! As others have said, you’re a natural for sure. She looks beautiful. And I get what you mean about the ‘ugly phase’. When I did my dolls faceup I started regretting it halfway through but it turned out fine :sweat

    16. Thank you so much! <3 Right? It's really about keeping the faith (that things will turn out right) during the 'ugly phase' :XD:

    17. Wow! I wish my first faceup had been that good (or my most recent, for that matter). Those eyebrows are so good!

    18. really stunning job! You are on your way to being a professional! How long did this take you? The lashes are wonderfull!

      • x 1
    19. Aw, you're much too kind, thank you Teddy!

Ahhh thank you!! :XD: Let's see... I did around 7 layers of coating which I let sit for about 45min to an hour each after spraying. The actual drawing didn't take that long, I feel like it was about 15 minutes each time, probably:3nodding: I started at about 1pm and ended at about 10pm!

    20. Honestly—this looks professionally done, in my opinion. The delicate line detailing of the eyebrow hairs, the lower eyelashes—spectacularly done. I also think the lips turned out very nicely. Overall, great job—especially for a first attempt.:thumbup:kitty2

    21. I'm shocked! This is your first?? It looks amazing! Even as an artist my first didn't look this good, because painting dolls is so much different than doing art on paper. Keep on practicing! Maybe you'll be able to open your own shop!

      • x 1
    22. Like you, I dream of being able to create beautiful faceups. Just havn't had time yet to start. You did a wonderful job, would never guess it's your first time. Wow!

      • x 1
    23. Oh, you're so kind for saying that, thank you!! I'm genuinely surprised that everyone has had such nice things to say... it makes me feel like I should be a little less hard on myself, and just accept and enjoy the process. <3

Ahhh thank you so much!! :chibi I totally get it, I do occasionally do art digitally too, but it really is different to work in 3D - not to mention the materials used! And if I were to be able to open my own shop one day - now wouldn't that be a dream come true! :aheartbea:hug:

Thank you for being so sweet! <3 I hope you find the time to do so hopefully soon - it feels good to finally be able to get to it, like a huge check off the list :3nodding:

    24. This is honestly such a beautiful first attempt! I definitely understand being a bit frustrated about things not coming out just the way you pictured or intended, but you came out the gate with great results :)

    25. Aw, thank you for saying that - that's exactly how I feel about it, but everyone's encouragement really helps!<3 I've to remind myself that it's a natural process, we can't run without first learning how to walk, hehe :sweat

    26. May I ask you how long it took to complete?

    27. This is excellent! I really like the freckles/skin texture. I agree with it being nice to have dolls painted by yourself. I feel it makes them more personal as they are imprinted with your own artistic style.

    28. About 9 hours inclusive of MSC setting time!

Thank you! I tried to add in some freckles and it didn't look like they showed up too well irl - but they're surprisingly quite visible in photos hehe <3 And yes, they definitely end up feeling much more personal! :D

    29. WOW this is amazing for your first faceup! Very professional looking, i love the subtle shimmer on the eyelids

      • x 1
    30. Aw thank you, you're too kind!! I really loved doing up his eyelids too, so I'm glad to hear that~! :D

    31. If I was just seeing pictures and no text I wouldn’t say it’s a first one! You did a wonderful job, she’s so pretty!

    32. Aww, thank you for the compliment!!:aheartbea:aheartbea
