Aesthetics First face- ups !!

Nov 21, 2015

    1. Hello everyone!!!!

I am still pretty new to doing face-ups, but I wanted to share my attempts that I've done so far. I've been practicing on my BF Tommy!! All faceups have been done with pastels and watercolor pencils.

My apologies for the phone pics and various sizes; I hope these are still good enough!

      First:

      Yikes.

      Second:

Tbh this is one of my favorites still... I really like how her freckles came out.

      Third:
      Weird lips.

      Fourth?:

She had this faceup for a while, and finally got a body! My favorite lips that I've done.

      Fifth I think???:

Didn't document this one very well but she apparently got weird eyeliner wings at one point.... weird.

Sixth apparently, I cant believe she had this one for So Long Ugh:

I did this one with the head still on the body... because I couldn't figure out how to get her head back off for literally months. It's by far the worst faceup she's had since her first and I feel so bad that she had it for so long.... hhh.

      CURRENT!!!!!:

Finally got her head off and redid it!!! I tend to draw people with redder noses so I went for that aesthetic with her faceup this time.

If you have any comments and/or critiques please let me know, I'm always looking to improve!! Thanks much!!!!!

    2. I can definitely see the improvement! :) I'm not generally too fond of overly-red noses, but it look quite adorable on your girl!

The big things I note are that her eyebrows are a little on the thin side. They are also positioned so that they are a tad on the high side; they don't quite line up with her browbone all the way, but it gives her an inquisitive look, which I think works for her face. :) And then I'd just suggest more practice to get the skills you have for the eyelashes to transition to doing the eyebrow hairs.

And the the one other thing I'm noticing is that her eyeshadow looks a little grainy. You can fix that by building up the blushing around her eyes first with the same color as the rest of the blushing, then adding a slightly darker color (perhaps add some brown into the pink you are using), then after a layer or so of that, a slightly-darker-yet color to it. Or, perhaps it just needs a few more layers of whatever color you chose there. :) Either way, you should get the darker color, without it ending up grainy.

And I can never tell how I feel about lips until I see them with gloss on. :P I'd love to see more if you do plan to add gloss later! :)

    3. @AirimirOfGondor Thank you for your critique!!! I agree w/ both your comments - I think that's what I liked most about her 2nd faceup was the eyebrow placement actually, haha. This time they're definitely a bit higher up, but if I go back and edit this one I'll make them sit a little lower down. Also I need to work on her eyeshadow too, but I'm just nervous about wrecking the faceup itself... im using a can of Testors and it's ruined quite a few faceups-in-progress for me in the past.

Also - I had gloss at one point, as you can see! I.... have no idea where it's gotten off to though. I'll have to dig through my art supplies.

      Anyways, thank you once again!!

    4. Sorry i dont have to much to add since i'm extremely new to the hobby but i just wanted to say how amazing the progression from the first face up to the final one shown is! Your lines are so much softer and yet at the same time crisper and more defined from one another. i was kind of getting down on myself since my face ups haven't been what i wanted but seeing your work here has really encouraged me to get back on the horse so i just wanted to say thanks for posting your amazing work.

    5. Between the first and the current face-up, you have improved a lot !
The current face-up is very cute. The eyebrows are positioned a little bit too high in my opinion, but it adds cuteness to the expression of the doll, she looks adorable with this face-up :)

    6. These faceups are really cute! I would suggest getting a practice head and trying more adventureous faceups.

    7. The progression can be seen well. :) And I don't dare to critique, because I haven't made any makeups yet. ^^ But keep going with doing even better and better makeups! :thumbup

    8. I really like the red nose, along with the freckles and eyebrow detailing

    9. For the eyebrows, you could add some darker browns/reddish-browns for more depth. Your pencil work has definitely improved through the course of your photos, so show it off by adding more contrast!

    10. Your faceups are so cute! I really get a sense of your doll's character from the pictures you posted. I love the freckle details, they are well placed and so adorable. I would watch out for eyebrow shape and placement though. I've noticed that in the last pictures the eyebrows are really high (if this is intentional disregard this comment!), and one seems a little longer than the other. Eyebrows really frame the face (for both dolls and humans), so practising those might get you a leg-up on really showing the personality of your characters.

    11. Love the freckles on the third and current photos!! Great job! Maybe a color more brownish would make them even better :)
A tip if you want :P I would try around more eyebrows style to improve it..they are the most difficult part in my opinion :)
Maybe lower them a little to make them more real..other than that in your current photos, they are really improved!

    12. i love her little red nose ^^ its just so cute ^^ it also makes her look quite a bit younger (not certain if that was what was interned but i just thought it was so adorable ^^)
your blushing is amazing its so soft and well blended that it looks entirely natural and she really just glows ^^
the one bit of advice i would give is to perhaps do a few more layers on the eye brows the contrast of the shades you used may be a bit to different from one another using a pencil that is a shade or two later and then using the one you have used here may create ad more 3-dimensional look that apeers more realistic ^^
again she just looks so cute it makes me want to see more face ups like this one with the little red nose ^^
