Aesthetics First face-up -- Kid Hellboy

Jun 12, 2018

    1. Hi folks! Due to a sudden urge to show my Kid Hellboy and Kid Abe dolls to actor Doug Jones this coming weekend, I (probably stupidly) decided I'd try to give them basic face ups -- having never painted a doll before. Of course I decided to start on non-human colored resin too, for extra stupidity. ;)

But HB is "finished", and I'd really appreciate some constructive criticism!

He is a red resin Aiden 10 from 5stardoll and was completely blank when I started. I can already say that I think my MSC coverage was not the best, because there are streaky spots when you look closely at some areas. I didn't have much luck with watercolor pencils (Spectracolor) when trying to make the eyelid creases -- perhaps they're not soft enough? It just felt like I was scratching instead of drawing. I ended up going over them with acrylic paint, which I also just realized I forgot to dilute with flow-aid. -___-

Hellboy doesn't have eyebrows so that definitely helped me out haha. I may put eyelashes on him, but I'm not sure yet.

    2. Cute:love if you want criticism, I would say not that you know what happened with the acrylic paint, you may consider doing it over? The concept is amazing, and it does look good as is, but it could look 10x better just with that one tweak... if you add lashes I would use shorter length... but really it' great

    3. I think that's a pretty stellar job you did! Id say don't fiddle with it until later, if you feel like it. I think it would do you very well for showing it off this weekend! With any craft/hand work, if you look closely, and are familiar with the technique and such, you can always find things to maybe change up a bit, or you as the artist may feel that something needs changing, because you know what technique or variable you might want to redo.. I'd say the overall impression is really nice! (in quilting we have the 5 mile an hour rule, if someone can't see an issue while strolling past at 5 miles per hour... it ain't an issue! ;) )

    4. Thanks! And yes, I already know that I'll want to do this one over -- but I don't have time before the convention, so it'll have to wait. :( I have some short lashes, I may see if they help with the overall look!

Thank you! And yeah, I do think it works for the purposes of some photos with Doug this weekend -- the photographer likely won't be zooming in on the doll to see the flaws lol

    5. I'm still a newbie concerning the hobby, so you won't get any constructive criticism from me ... but he sure is cute as a button. :love

    7. I’m also very new but I just wanted to pop in and say he is so so so cute!!! Especially the teeth! I think you did a wonderful job for your first face up especially considering you were in a rush :)

    9. I think he looks great. I haven't done a faceup myself (yet) so I don't really have any advice, but I agree that the eyelid creases could be a little cleaner. And the blushing(? the shadowy parts?) seems a little grainy, not sure if that's the medium used or the MSC. But either way, I've seen this guy in a few places now and I absolutely love him, he's so cute.
