First Face Up - critique welcome!

Apr 28, 2018

    1. I've had my Myou DouDou for 2 months now but I felt intimidated and ended up putting away doing her face up until now. What do you guys think? I appreciate honest critique, it's ok :)

I would really like to know how I did for first time... I think the eyebrows are fairly even which wasn't difficult to achieve at all. I apologise for the quality of the photos, I am not good at taking them :(

The lips were difficult to paint with how curvy they are... and I felt that the pastels didn't really stay on the surface. Overall I think it is better than when she didn't have any face up at all :D

I'm glad my two incoming dolls have company faceups though, I thought it'd be a lot easier than it was :c

And her eyebrows are actually hidden under the wig xD She looks like a child's toy with how non professional the face up is but she's such a darling to me <3

    2. I love this. I know people will comment on the eyelashes, but I have to say that I love them. I find the simplicity in the faceup to be very akin to porcelain dolls I collect or a babydoll type of face. We come to have a certain expectation of what BJD faceups should be and I find it makes things bland and one dimensional. I love the simplicity and nostaglia of this kind of faceup. I think if you continue to develop your style, I hope you'll consider more faceups like this because it's a really untapped artistry and I adore it. If you decide to branch out to other styles, I'm sure it'll be wonderful too. Whatever speaks to you. But I'm glad you produced this and that I got to see it. It's very refreshing.

    3. I think it's great! Could use a little improvement, but since it is a yosd i think it fits for a child, I love the eyelashes, the only thing I personally dislike is the lips, they seem really red, but it could be the lighting, and if you do enjoy that look, that's fine too!

    4. First off, let me say that the eyebrows are fantastic! So funny that you say it wasnt hard, eyebrows have always been the hardest part of faceups for me :XD:

For pastels, it usually takes several layers of lightly brushing and sealing in between to build up the color you want, so keep at it.

I also like drawn on upper lashes, with some practice to get your lines finer and it could be really great. My advice would be, dont be afraid to use more colors. The more colors you use, the more depth the faceup has.

Overall it is very cute! Good first faceup <3

    5. It’s really beautiful! I love the look of drawn eyelashes honestly. They’re a bit less neat than they could be but of course it takes time to perfect. I’m most impressed by the eyebrows they’re amazing omg. The expression you achieved is really lovely.

I also love the redness of the lips. It looks like the doll is wearing lipstick to me but if that’s not what you’re going for I’d try something softer and less concentrated. I find that something that helps to bring more color and shape to the face is building up pastels around the edges especially the cheeks and jaw contour, but that’s more preference.

Overall it’s lovely for your first faceup! I’d definitely work on building up more tones with the pastels. Other than that it’s really really nice!

    6. The first suggestion I would make would be to practice your line quality. I think your style is very nice, but the lines and the edges of the lips could be cleaner.

The second would be to introduce more color variation. There's nothing wrong with brown eyelashes instead of the more common black for a softer, younger look, but adding a darker brown near the edges of the eyelids (and perhaps some fine white lines between the lashes) will add much more depth and texture. Likewise, using a combination of peach tones around the eyes/nose/forehead and pink tones at the cheeks looks more lifelike, if you want that kind of look.

Regarding the pastels, the two things i've found to be most helpful are:
      • Do at least 2 base layers of sealant before you start painting, and BE REALLY REALLY SURE TO LET THEM DRY 100%. Like, at the point when you think they're dry, wait another 30 minutes,
      • Use a brush that is soft enough to not scratch the sealant but firm enough to really rub the pastels in. I find that eyeshadow brushes are perfect. Most painting brushes just don't create enough pressure for the pastels to stick.
The thing I like best of what you've done is the shape of the lips!

    7. Omg I'm fairly sure your post made me blush while reading it xD I wasn't paiting the doll from a reference but from my head and when I compared her later to professional face ups I wasn't too happy. I didn't even realise that was a style :D but I think I know what you mean and that looks definitely suits small, child like dolls that are not expected to look like real people but like their adorable selves :)

@CreamyLemonGirl - yes, from a technical side the lips were the hardest to do because of the curve, I couldn't get the watercolour pencil to look even and I might have overdone it :sweat

@Cydril - thank you :) yes, it surprised me how easy the eyebrows were to draw as many people compain about it. I think that is because I only draw linearts... so as a result I am very inexperienced with using colour which was noted by a few of you :thumbup so it is a very good advice for me!

@IsaAyumu - I will definitely try to work on that aspect :) I think I was getting lazy with it, I should have sharpened my pencils before every stroke but I figured I would pull it off somehow xD And about the contouring - noted :) though I think that would work better on a more mature doll as with a cute DouDou I tried to make the cheeks look ever BIGGER <3 <3 <3 (omg what is wrong with me)

@Kittzel - yes, I agree :) I hope that will come with practice as I found the surface to be fairly difficult to work on. And thank you for pointing out the colouring - I am not experienced with using colour so it is a very valuable advise to me :)

Thank you for taking the time to critique my first face up :) Your imput is really helpful to me and I will keep it in mind when I decide to try another one. I looked at the doll again today and... she does not look perfect but she's so darn cute I just want to hug her all day <3 I hope I can make my doll even more cute in the future so she will break everyone's hearts :D (not just mine)

    8. Hi Soni! First off, I would just like to say that I adore this sculpt. I have never seen it before. Excellent first faceup. I like the vibrancy of the colors you have used, your eyelash position and the expression of your eyebrows. I can see from these photos that your sealant is very thin. In the future I would recommend doing layers of it with your colors building up in between. I think this would soften blushes areas further and define lines you’ve made. Start out light, build up those colors gradually! Overall, I think she is really cute.

    9. Thank you! :) And yes, DouDou is really cute! Even though she's a YOSD, she doesn't seem to me as small as some people's tinies when they hold them on youtube videos. She has a big presence for such a small doll!

    10. In all my years in this hobby I have always wanted and talked about getting a YOSD. I have never had one of my own. It’s so funny to me because I started out with Tinies and always thought MSD and SD would be too big. I bought a MSD and SD before I bought a YOSD??? How does that make sense?! Haha! Anyway, she’s really cute and I hope you are happy with how she came out. That is the most important part!

    11. She has an MSD head size so there is some compromise I guess :D Myou has really nice tinies and I'm really happy with her quality and poseability - though she's single jointed, she holds every pose and mid pose with no problem. I heard those are also popular bodies to hybrid YOSD if you even consider getting a YOSD :)

    12. Oh wow! Very interesting. Thank you for that information. I only just joined DOA and I am stumbling upon so many useful words.

    13. I think it is very well done, the eyelashes especially I find really cute. The one thing you could change that could think of is probably using a more varied color palette like having darker eyelashes than brows, at this point it looks a bit red (might be what youre going for) but I think that could really elevate the faceup a lot more! Nonetheless great job!

    14. Thanks :) I made the mistake of buying only a few shades of watercolour pencils to get them in better quality so I will need to stock up. But I understand what everyone is saying, shading will add more depth to the faceup. I am just not experienced with using colours so it's all new to me :sweat My next face up will be much better! :D

    15. This is actually pretty cute! I have a porcelain doll with a similar paint job at home, and I adore her to bits. I would suggest using a darker color for the eyelashes, but the shape is adorable. The eyebrows seem a bit high on her forehead in comparison to her eye sockets, and since they are relatively small it doesn't look very natural, but that's my only real criticism.

    16. Thank you for pointing out the eyebrows! :) I had this feelings as well but I wasn't sure.. I thought that maybe it's normal lol
I'll keep that in mind for when I'll be redoing her face up :)

    17. Aaawwww I received my MYOU Doudou a short time ago in mid April and it’s so cool to see this doll owned by somebody else! They look so different from each other!

You did a good job on this face up, keep practicing and you’ll get better and better defining the traits of your style more and more.
It really looks so old school, which has its charm and is somewhat rarely seen anymore. What I recognized immediately, was that it feels like you didn’t really use sealant or used not enough or the wrong sealant, which is why the pastels didn’t stick to the surface and the doll looks slightly shiny, too. Another reason might also be that you didn’t shake the sealant long enough, so the little pigments (that’s the stuff making the flat sealant flat actually) didn’t have the chance to mix well into the sealant’s liquid. Shake well for at least 2 minutes.

She’s super cute! I especially adore your eyebrow talent!!! What the heck, I mean, I am still struggling painting nice eyebrows and I do face ups since November last year, haha. You did so well!

    18. I would be over the moon if my first face-up came out this adorable. I love this character (pink is my favorite color).

    19. Oops sorry, I completety forgot to respond to you :sweat I sprayed her once when I first got her and 3 more times before doing the faceup. I think maybe it's just the type of sealant (Citadel)? Though it doesn't say that it's either matt or glossy to it might be somewhere in between... would you recommend doing more layers? It could be as you said because I didn't shake it enough, I will keep it in mind for the next time :) Thank you so much for your input <3 And so sorry for only replying today, life was fairly hectic as of late.

@Bowhead thank you! I am slowly warming up to pink myself, DouDou's cuteness definitely helps :D

    20. Absolutely fine! No problem! I definitely understand that.

I can give you some advice on the sealant, though, because I used to use the citadel sealant, too.

They changed their sealant somewhen in December. The former sealant is called ‘purity seal’ which was comparable to MSC.

After they changed the sealant, the Mann changed to ‘muniturium’ and is absolutely useless for face ups, because it is super glossy and pastels won’t stick to the surface.
When I noticed the change, I switched over to MSC which was the very best decision.

      Hope this helps you. <3

    21. That's what I was afraid of to be honest :( The pastels don't want to stick to it at all and then they come out blotchy... but I assumed it was my lack of skill, which I'm pretty sure is a factor too. Unfortunately I live in a tiny country (Ireland) so Citadel seems to be the only recommended sealant that I can get locally... and most of eBay sellers don't ship to Europe at all.

The humidity is here usually at around 80% so I think that MSC might not be the best choice neither :( But I will keep my eyes open and try to find a different sealant to at the very least see the difference. Thank you again for the advise :)

EDIT: Oh and did you upload pictures of your DouDou anywhere? I am very curious to see her! :)

    22. When you said citadel I instantly knew the problem... I’m sorry for you, dear!
You did a great job and believe me: once you get a proper sealant, you’ll notice the difference!

Same problem here. I’m from Germany, so Europe, too, and finding MSC is a hard trial. But I found a MSC dealer on eBay who also ships to Europe! You should give eBay a try and get a can of MSC. If you need any help, please feel free to ask me. Always glad to help!

Aaaawwww you’re so sweet! I did his face up right the day he arrived, but he’s still running around in his panties dressed in pink clothes borrowed from my girls. On top of this, I need to make him a pair of blue eyes and I don’t have a matching wig for him, too!! It’s the right hair cut, but has the wrong color. And guess what... it’s pink. :XD:
I’ll post photos of him for you during the day! He really is super cute!

    23. Well it is either MSC or Army Painter and both from what I've read are known to be sensitive to humidity :sweat I guess I'll go with the classic first, or depending which one is available when I'll be shopping for supplies again. I will use the Citadel until then just to practice, because the shine doesn't bother me and I just wish the pastels would stick to it. She is my only doll so far (at home with me) and I thought it was normal that she's shiny like this until you pointed it out xd

A boy DouDou :D Now I really want to see <3 I really am in love with this sculpt, it makes me happy to look at it, like s/he's some kind of a puppy that will remain tiny and cute forever :XD: But of course I understand that you need to make him look all proper and dashing for the big reveal ;)

    24. There is also a sealant by Luiquitex (I hope i wrote that right) which is applied via airbrush. Maybe thats a go for you? with this sealant, I unfortunately have no experience, because I have no air brushing machine at home.

aaaahhhh I wanted to take a proper photo of Leon (my MYOU Doudou) but I just had no time. But I caught him running around in the room in said panties :'D

I hope to sew for him one day! By the way here is an advanced tip (x'D): MNF sweaters fit this doll perfectly, it seems. ♥
I hope you like my little boy! He's such a cutie and I really need to take proper photos of his FU I did.

    25. I think you did a great job on the eyebrows. I like the drawn eyelashes, but maybe they should be more identical? As it is, I like the left side better.
