First face up, concrit please!

May 25, 2018

    1. Here's my first face up ever, on a Doll Family-A practice head!

I know there's many things to improve, but I'd love some feedback from others because there's probably a lot of things I haven't noticed!
I used soft pastels (Raphael loisirs), liquitex matte varnish, watercolor pencils (albretch durer) and acrylics (off brand)

She has glass eyes but I don't have them at dorm with me, so these are homemade with clay (I hope that's ok to post!)

Any feedback, advice etc would be very appreciated!!

    2. I like the lips and eyes but the brows looks slightly uneven, left looks a bit thinner than right :3 Maybe use a finer brush to paint the brow and lower lashes

    3. Haha you noticed =v=;; Yeah, the brush was absolutely too thick, I thought it was really thin already but the lines wouldn't come thinner no matter what. I underestimated how delicate hair is! Pretty frustrating, specially since brushes are what I'm most comfortable with!

I've actually just bought a new brush today, and it's a real beauty, can't wait to try it out! Thanks a lot for the feedback!

    4. Shading in the ears looks a lil too dark. Possibly the same with nostrils but its not so bad :3 The values are really nice otherwise

    5. Wooooow she's gorgeous! Just like everyone else before me, I also prefer lighter brows. I used sharpened pencils. I don't have the fine motor skills to paint brows yet. :p

    6. Your nostrils are defintely a bit harsh, maybe try using pastel layering to get more of a gradual shadow?
Also, I feel like the eyeliner is trying to fight against the eye shape instead of working with it. I do a lot of makeup on people, and when doing wings on lids that aren’t straight across, you need to do less of an angle or “swoop” and connect the tip of the wing deeper into the eye so its “thicker”. Try looking up makeup tutorials on eyeliner, it should help you get a feel for liner on different eye shapes!

Overall though, I’d say well done for a first go!

    7. Ahhh true, I hadn't noticed! By nostrils do you mean the inside or the sides btw? Thanks for the feedback!

    8. Ahh I see, I did struggle with the eye shape a bit since the outer corners are droopy, and I had no idea what to do with it! Thanks, I'll try that next!!

    9. My advice- the first line you should draw for the eyeliner should be the “flick” of the wing. You want to bring it out a bit more than up, so that it goes beyond the edge of the eye, and the tip shouldn’t go too much higher than the highest point of the upper lid, if you’re going for a more dramatic look. Small wings are done the same way. Then start in the middle of the top lid when pulling your liner to the wing. Doll eyes are much smaller, but on people you try to make a little triangle between the two lines that you then fill in, so it doesn’t look like a line that bends. After filling in the wing, if desired, you can pull a thin line from the inner eye to the middle and smooth the “seam”. However, on downturned eyes, connecting to the inner corner can give it a bit of a harsher look as generally the wing is to produce an illusion of the eye being more upturned or straight across than it is. Lower lid liner should be done last and sparingly, as going along the waterline all the way to the inner corner can give it a very 2005 look if you know what I mean, which is great if thats what youre going for, but to me it doesn’t look like that’s the case :)
      Best of luck!

    10. No problem and good luck with your new brush :3 I need to get a new one myself as I'm struggling to create ultra fine lines that tapers out at the tip.

    11. Looks really good! Maybe just keep the pencil a tad bit sharper next time ^^

    12. Thanks! It was actually all brushes save for the base sketch and the eyeliner though, just messed up with the size + not having the skills haha

    13. I like the coloring in the lips, I think it looks really good. I would back up what's been said about the brows, maybe finer strokes, unless stylistically you want them thick or less realistic, in which case perhaps try making them more uniform.
Inner ear seems a bit dark, as well. It also looks like there's a smudge on the upper part of the ear... is it a purposeful mark?
Good luck on your continued efforts, overall not bad at all.

    14. Just noticed the smudge on the upper pic, weird, don't see it irl or in the other pics!! Maybe it was some loose pastel on my fingers. I like thick eyebrows but I do want better thinner hairs for it. Ty for the advice!

    15. This is great for a first faceup! As for critques, I'd say try and work on making the eyebrows more even, and adding more skin texturing to the head. Maybe try and get some different shades of brown in the eyebrows aswell. :) All in all though, it's a great first faceup!
