Aesthetics First face up Completed

Jan 5, 2015

    1. After being in the hobby for 18 months I have just attempted my first face up.
It was purely out of necessity as I had bought a Domuya Venturo from ebay, his photos had not been all that great but I was in for a shock when he arrived. He was very yellowed not too bad if even, his leg covers had been superglued in place at some point and his face up was very smudged and damaged.
I was so dissapointed that I set to work on him with IPA which did not even touch the face paint. One bottle of acetone, 4 hours with much scrubbing and cotton wool later he had a stripped but patchy face.
The body and cleaned up well and most traces of glue have been removed.
I have used mainly pastels sealing well between each layer. To start with I gave him a light acrylic base to match his resin colour and even it out sealing well before and after. It has taken me a day to get this far and I still have eyebrows and lower lashes to do, possibly upper lashes but I am really happy how he is turning out.
He may be staying afterall !! especially as he now fits the character I had hoped for him.
      Any critique welcomed. Thank you

    3. Great improvement! Very good for a first faceup.

    4. Thank you. I watched alot of videos on Youtube and looked at the tutorials on here before attempting it.

    5. That is like eleventy million times better than the before photo. The brows are rather good which is the part that most people seem to find the hardest. Well done.

    6. Thank you so much, the brows were the bit I was most worried about so in the end I made a stencil with masking tape and use pastels to give me the shape. I then removed the masking tape and used a very fine brush from a nail art kit and some slightly thinned acrylic to do the lines.

    7. wonderful difference and love the line work! kudos!

    8. I might try that method myself. Thanks.

    9. You can do a very pale pastel layer that will just give a basic shape but wont show up to much if you just wanted lines as I tried this first.
      ATYL Thank you so much

    10. Kudos, seriously....I have a ways to go before I work up to trying my first one....I have to agree that the eyebrows are very nice. His poor face in the "before" pic... :-( The colors of his eyes really pop, too. Great work!

    11. Thank you Mamba.

    12. Thank god you could fix him up! That previous face up was NOT working.. Great job!

    13. I think you've greatly improved him, especially with this being your first faceup! It takes some of us months or even years to reach that level. :D

There are really only two things that stood out to me that might benefit from a little change.

First, the painted eyelashes. The linework is very nice, color is good. I would just make them go along the bottom of the eye, in a little closer to the nose. As you have them, they're very thick on the outer half of the eye, then just comes to an abrupt stop. If you look at a real eye, the lashes will go further across, though likely thinner as you go in. I think adding a few lighter, shorter strokes there might help him look a little more realistic.

Second, because his eyes are so large and expressive, you might want to consider adding fake eyelashes to his upper lid. You can get short doll eyelashes in brown, so they won't make him look girly or like he's wearing makeup, but will soften the eyes a bit so he looks less surprised. (Of course, this is all just opinion without knowing his character, so it may or may not be a good option for him).

I think you have a wonderful start on faceups, and tons of potential! Keep it up!

    14. Thank you for your kind comments.
I will try the lashes upper and lower on my next face up. I do have some but was a bit nervous at trying them.

    15. Wow!

You deserve all the praise - if I had received him in that condition, I would have returned the doll asap :shudder

It's wonderful though that you didn't, because it gave you the unique opportunity to bond with him and recreate him into who he really is. I very much like the face-up; it's subtlety makes him look gentle and strong at the same time.

    16. Arkascha Thank you for your really kind words.

    17. That before picture is horrible, but you cleaned him up real nice :). I'd say it look pretty good for a first face-up! You did a great job on the eyebrows, those hairs can be tricky!

    18. Thank you so much.

    19. A remarkable improvement! Great job!!!! :D

    20. Wow you really transformed him!

    21. Oh my gosh, what an amazing improvement!! If you can do this with a stained doll, I can't even imagine what you could do with a fancy new one. Great job!! I know someone else already probably said it, but I LOVE the eyelashes and eyebrows, your linework is sooo fine.

    22. I love his lower lashes, you really did an Amazing job! The brows look awesome too, so don't stop practicing!

    23. I would just recommend adding some color to the cheeks 0: the eyebrows and lashes are amazing!
      Great improvement :D
