First ever faceup!

Jul 31, 2022

    1. Hello doll friends!

I wanted to share the first face up I've done since getting into this hobby. I'm still a beginner, so any critiques would be appreciated!

I found a DF-A practice head for 20$ on Alice's Collections so I decided to give it a go for my first time.

I decided to put my own spin on an already established character for my first faceup. This is based off of Painter's Golden Ratio skin from the video game Identity V.

I found the eyelashes really easy to apply with Aleene's Original Tacky Glue.

Wig and a bow! I used nupastels and watercolor pencils for everything except for the gold details; that's acrylic paint.

A closeup. I'm really proud of how it turned out for my first faceup. ♡

    6. Amazing job for a first time! Something id suggest is having your pencil tips be slightly sharpend with a knife to have a finer point!
For your paint i suggest very thin layers wich you can build ontop of eachother
And then something personal, id ass some blushing on the cheeks

    7. Thank you so much!
I bought them off of Alice's Collections, they are listed there as Eyelash-06 in black. They're available in other colors too.

    8. Thank you for the feedback! I sharpened my pencils with a pencil sharpener, I'll try a knife next time. I also did the paint in one layer, I feel like multiple thin layers would definitely look better. I did very light blush as an aesthetic choice, but it can definitely be a little darker.

    9. I am glad you found the eyelash application so easy. I hope you never feel differently :XD: I hate applying them so much that I avoid it at ridiculous lengths. I truly think some people must have a knack for it but not me.
It's hard for me to offer critique without knowing about what you might be working towards look wise, but I will say, you've done a wonderful job with your first, and I really enjoy the playful color combos. In my opinion the best advice is keep having fun and think up all sorts of wild ideas to attempt and that is the best aid in practicing and learning more.

    10. Thank you so much for the kind words! I found eyelashes really easy to apply with tacky glue, and I also have these little stylus tools to help with the glue application and to press the eyelashes in place.

I really love bold and fun color combos, I'm glad you like it! ♡

    11. Hmm, looks good. Like pointed out, getting very sharp points to your pencils would leave cleaner lines. What kind of brushes did you use for the acrylic? Some miniature or fine line art, like really tiny ones, are good for doll faces

    12. I love it, it's so bright. As a suggestion, for the acrylic, have you considered doing an underpaint/draw of pale brown in watercolor pencil to outline the shapes you want? I'm terrible at getting paint to do what I want, so I've always found having an underlayer of line drawing helps me get detail right. Also maybe finer brushes? I think the gold detail on the nose and cheek are a very nice touch, and refining them into something with sharper edges would add to the effect.

On a strictly personal preference level, I'd suggest removing the gold dots under the eye from the right-hand side - let the cheek detail carry the visual weight on that side, and use the dots on the other side as a a counterbalance. The asymmetry is a big strength on this face-up, and I think leaning in would only enhance that. The eyebrows I think might look better with a dark underlayer. An auburn or mid-tone brown, with gold on top so the underlayer shows through. That's all up to your choice, though, my tastes don't necessarily match yours.

It's lovely, and you should be very proud of it.
