Aesthetics First Ever Faceup

Mar 22, 2018

    1. So I did my first face up today. I'd really like 100% honest feedback. I promise you won't hurt my feelings! I know some of the lines aren't very smooth or good because I didn't have small enough brushes to do what I wanted. Also, the shine isn't because she's actually shiny, but from using a flashlight for light xD.

    2. Overall I think it looks great for a first try! I think the shading was done very well; it's not too in your face but it definitely gives the doll a healthy flush. I agree that your lines could be smoother though, and the eyelashes seem a little faint and blurry to me? If you're using paint for them maybe thinning it a little less would help, or if you're using watercolour pencils it could help to make them sharper and use more layers :) You did a great job though!

    3. Thank you! I redid the eyelashes and they look a bit bitter. I’m using watercolor pencils for them but couldn’t find a pencil sharpener... lol. I wanted to use paint but I need little brushes!

    4. What I do like:
      • Your general color choices for each part- they are cute and not very over-the top.
      • The top eyeliner looks pretty good, nice wing on the outside corners!

      Suggestions:
      • Use multiple, thinner layers on everything. Trying to get the dark, rich colors you're looking for on one or two layers just makes chalk pastel blushing look uneven and acrylic lines will be chunky and peel off easily.
      • Make sure each layer dries completely before moving on. Don't paint/blush over wet sealer and don't seal over wet paint.
      • Keep your pencils REALLY sharp.
      • Use circular motions when blushing to minimize "streaky colors"
      • Thin your paints to an ink-like consistency. Water can only thin acrylics so much before it deteriorates the integrity of the paint itself, so find a good acrylic medium/thinner to use. I stopped using acrylics, so I don't have any recommendations, sorry.
      • Don't get impatient with yourself or the project. Take your time and really admire your work as you do it!
      • Do it, redo it, and redo it again... practice, practice, practice! you will eventually find your style and techniques that work for you.
Not that I have much room to critique, but I do have quite a few faceups under my belt that look almost exactly like this... I can't stress the importance of using lots of thin layers to build up color. It allows you more room for error and correction, and will provide a softer outcome. It looks really good for a first try though! I hope to see your skills improve!

Try watching youtube videos. Nicolle's Dreams are quite relaxing to watch and she's got some great advice!

    5. Thank you for all the advice! I will definitely use it on my next try! :sweat I was definitely too frustrated throughout the whole process. I think now that I did the first one, I'll be able to relax a bit more from now on.

    8. Awh yay!! Congrats on the progress!

    9. Thank you. It took me a few years and a couple dozen tries, but I've gotten to a place I think I'm comfortable with. I'm pretty sure you will get to a point you're comfortable with too in time. Keep trying, and thank you for sharing your first attempt, it's brave, considering how mean people can get.
