hi i havent been on this forum in a long time and i cant remember if i even actually said anything here but i guess that doesnt matter im 16 i got into bjds about a year and a half ago when i got one for my birthday, ive always enjoyed sculpting and have made many non articulated dolls in my time and always wanted to make one. i stared off just practising heads to begin with till i got confident with that as what i was used to making was much more animalistic. i then went threw some hard times just as i was starting to make my first doll and basicly dropped all my hobbies... as you might of guessed im starting this again, and i planned to do only one doll to begin with but i fell in love with mermaid bjds and these two seemed like the perfect pair so im going to make them together. im used to making small things and im good at little details so i thought starting at this size wouldnt be too bad. im curently waiting for my sculpy to arive, not sure if its gonna work well or not yet, im planning on useing ultra light sculpy (it floats ) and i havent heard of anyone else using it so i thought id give it a try. here are the desings for the two little ladys, they dont have names yet and i know its not too detailed but i know what im planning to do, im kinda a "doesnt put it down on paper" kinda guy http://th04.deviantart.net/fs70/PRE/i/2012/220/b/c/mer_doll_by_smileyjay-d5ac1vm.jpg http://th08.deviantart.net/fs71/PRE/i/2012/220/b/1/pony_doll_by_smileyjay-d5ac1wh.png the side view of my mer girl isnt in scale, its just so i know what im doing, and i also plan to weight the other ones hooves, the sculpey is so light she probably wouldnt stand otherwise please tell me what you think and if i've made any mistakes, i'll update as when i've started the heads
Welcome to the forum and yay for first doll~ The boobs seem to sit on the rib cage a bit awkwardly. Maybe try a comma shape instead of perfect spheres? The hip joint might have to be cut higher for her to be able to sit comfortably.
thanks for replying n_n i see what you mean about her boobs, i'll keep that in mind and are you refering to the hooved doll's hips? just wondering
I think she does mean the hooved doll's hips, but I see there is a ball and then the upperleg part with an inside curve. That may work as there are designs with the ball attached to the hip part. I think you'll have to either make a proto type to test the design or make your doll and make changes as you go.
oops, sorry, I should have specified. You both got it right, I was worrying about the hooved doll's hips. The hip part seems to come too far down on the ball for the doll to be able to sit, when I was picturing movements in my head. Or it might not be a problem if the ball is attached to the hip instead of the thigh, like Arabidopsis says. You should try it out.
ah okay, i get you thanks for the advice, i'll remember it i tend to not stick exactly to plans and edit as i go along anyway, so im sure i'll figure out what works best also, i'll post my progress as soon as i find a camera
okay so i found a camera my sculpey came 2 days ago, its really strange stuff, like modeling with marshmallows... it works pretty well tho, itss slightly more dificult than regular sculpey but i like working with it and it looks pretty good when cured here are some pictures of my work in progress: http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/223/0/0/untitled_by_smileyjay-d5aonwq.jpg ^ what ive done so far with my msd girl for a sence of scale http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/223/8/3/untitled_by_smileyjay-d5aonx5.jpg ^ close up of the hooved girl so far http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/223/8/f/untitled_by_smileyjay-d5aony2.jpg ^ close up of mermaid, ive got thurther with her http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2012/223/3/8/untitled_by_smileyjay-d5aonyl.jpg ^ hooved girls head, front view, actually an old head i made about a year ago http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/223/7/8/untitled_by_smileyjay-d5aonz5.jpg ^ turned slightly http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2012/223/d/6/untitled_by_smileyjay-d5aonzp.jpg ^ side view http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2012/223/5/d/untitled_by_smileyjay-d5aoo06.jpg ^ mermaid head, front view, this is a new head http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2012/223/4/1/untitled_by_smileyjay-d5aoo0q.jpg ^ turned slightly http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/223/e/3/untitled_by_smileyjay-d5aoo1z.jpg ^ side view http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2012/223/4/3/untitled_by_smileyjay-d5aoo2i.jpg ^ mermaid torso front view http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/223/4/9/untitled_by_smileyjay-d5aoo31.jpg ^ side view http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2012/223/5/f/untitled_by_smileyjay-d5aoo3c.jpg ^ leaning forward, needs work http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2012/223/e/c/untitled_by_smileyjay-d5aoo3z.jpg ^ leaning back, i like this one http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2012/223/0/7/untitled_by_smileyjay-d5aoo4e.jpg ^ back view http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/223/0/5/untitled_by_smileyjay-d5aoo4q.jpg ^ leaning to the side http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/223/6/7/untitled_by_smileyjay-d5aoo5f.jpg ^ start of tail there we go, thats what ive done so far please bare in mind that i havent dont any fine sanding at all yet and i still need to work on everything
okay so i know im no where near the standard of most of the people here, but im trying... as usual, ive changed wheat im doing halfway through, my once mermaid has become a styleized humanish doll i'm finding this difficult, and im spending alot of time on her i'd really like someone elses opinion... heres the full view so far, the head i made was too big so im gonna do that again last, i think shes coming together tho... still needs lots of sanding how her torso fits together, i had real trouble with her hips, i ended up having to carve a piece of polystyrene to the shape of her tummy and make it around that, it was difficult side view one foot top view, i put weights in them to help her side so they had to be kinda big underneath of her foot
