So a few months ago I decided I needed to sculpt a bjd, I have made some progress but it's a little slow going.I have been working with scupley, but do you think I should start working with air dry clay? Because I do have some La doll sitting around and I see most people working with it I'm finally ready to start on the joints and put more detail into the body!
I can’t wait to see it develop, I have Das but haven’t had an opportunity to get sculpting, I’m still in the drawing stage.
Me too! I haven't done anything like this before so it's both exciting and frustrating. I wish you luck with your doll too!
It really depends on your preference. If you like working with Sculpey, keep going! I personally don't like working with air dry clay, because it cracks as you work with it, and you have to work in layers for large objects, but other people really like air dry clay, so. It's really up to you!
Ah that makes sense, it seems to be a pretty fragile medium tbh, but I see so many people using it I was wondering what the benefits were. Thanks for your input!
I've used both and prefer sculpey..it is less fragile..I like to use hot water to partially harden it for larger pieces that need a hollow core..kind of like dipping Easter eggs..the longer you dip the more it hardens towards the center
Oh wow I've never thought about using water! I normally bake it in the oven. How long does it take for your pieces to fully harden?
It depends on the thickness of the piece..if you make balls in different sizes and practice you can get a decent idea pretty quickly..warning though keep your water at preboil..just like a too hot oven a hard boil will make tiny cracks..I like water because there is no burning of thin pieces while thicker pieces harden..I have a habit of putting pieces on low for a longer period of time Oh hey you can also use alcohol and baby oil to get an extra smooth final surface with sculpey..it tells how if you do a search on google..I haven't tried it myself but I know people do..I just sand like crazy..lol
Oh cool, thanks for the tip! I figure a good mix of sanding and alcohol would probably have the best results. I really appreciate all your info!
Oh wow, so cute! Hoping you've been able to make progress since this last update! This is very inspirational.
