20–39cm Dolls First Doll - Little Star YoSD sized BJD

Feb 19, 2017

    1. I am in the process of making my first BJD! I love everything space, so of course this body line has been dubbed Little Star. I plan to make the many face sculpts named after space features, planned names include Ara, Ursa, and Zodiac. Ursa will be a purely dreaming line of head, Zodiac will have elf ears and a more mystical feel, and Ara will be the base human line face and will be the first I sculpt.

As of right now all I have is her sanded torso (still needs fine grit sanding for her smooth finish) and some rough legs and single joints. She is approximately the size of an Azone PureNeemo line doll with an Obitsu head. Here is my current progress, I would love tips, critiques and suggestions!

    2. Looks like a good start.
I'm not sure what your plan for the joints are, as there are so many different ways to do it, but make sure to plan ahead so that you can test the joints as you go.

Some people prefer to sculpt the entire limb in one piece, then cut it and build the joint after that. Other prefer working in pieces.
Personally I prefer the second method, as I want to be able to test joint balance and mobility as I go. When doing that; making functional joint balls right away saves a lot of work in the long run. I usually either just roll a ball of clay and shapes any holes and groves before baking (I work in polymer clay) or I use wooden balls and use a dremel with a cutting disk to make the groves.
For the same reason I try to make at least dummy feet early on, to help making sure that the doll can stand and have good balance. I test string frequently and test things as I go.

I like the overall shape of the torso you made and I am looking forward to see how she turns out.

    3. Little Star is coming along nicely! Her general shape is done and I managed to test string her, using straws in the place of hands and feet. I still need to make her some shoulder joints, but here she is so far. I opted for doing only one head sculpt as of right now, it fits 12mm eyes and is similar to my plans for the Zodiac sculpt. Here she is so far!

She looks kind of cartoony, actually!
